27th February 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th February, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Warrington Anglers Association has had a stand at the Northern Angling Show since its inception and this years event was without doubt the busiest ever. It is always nice to meet both new and existing members, chat about our sport, and swap fishy tales, great stuff. Many thanks to our 'display' team and especially to Paul and Andrew who served delicious chicken, bacon, and cheese hot rolls each day for our lunch.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifNorman Gannon who next week will celebrate his eightieth birthday shared first place at this weeks Mersey Series event with match organiser Ray Boden when they both weighed 0-9-8. They fished feeder tactics and Norman caught a brace of skimmers whereas Ray had six small roach.

Another disastrous result for our Disabled & Over 60's matchmen when George Barber aka 'The Breadman' needed only 0-4-2 on Monday for the win with a catch made up of a few tiny roach taken on punch bread. Another octogenarian, Stan Charnock who I am told is aged 82years and as keen as ever was in second place with 0-1-8. It was only the pair of anglers at either end who had fish to weigh-in!

Come on guys with those catch reports, good, bad, or unusual they are always more than welcome, please send to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.

20th February 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th February, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It's the Northern Angling Show this weekend the 24th and 25th February at Event City, Manchester and the good news aside from it being a cracking event is that our members can use the advertising leaflet included in the envelope with their 2018 membership card for a £2 discount on the door. Warrington Anglers Association have had a stand every year since the show started and I know our team of hard working volunteers wouldn't miss it for the world…and yes, despite the best of intentions we all end up buying some 'essential piece of tackle'. Come and see us on stand 372.

Ian Swainscough enjoyed a great couple of sessions this past weekend on the Bridgewater Canal at Lymm. On Saturday he caught pike of 11-8-0, 6-0-0, and 4-4-0 and on Sunday he moved further along the canal and not expecting a repeat of the previous day he was more than happy with a brace weighing 8-4-0 with the biggest a PB. Of 13lbs exactly. New to pike fishing he caught all the fish on sprat.

Ant Higham (aka King or the River) won our Sunday Mersey match Series on the Mersey this week with five roach for a weight of just over a pound (1-0-7). Derek Bibby was in second place with 0-11-8. All fish were caught on groundbait feeder and maggot.

From last weeks lowest match weight on record on our Disabled & Over 60's event, certainly during the thirty years or so that I have been writing this column, has this week has improved slightly, although still nothing to write home about. Derek Bibby was one up on his runner-up position the previous day by securing a win with 1-7-10 made up of eighty, yes 80 tiny roach for 1-7-10 taken on pole and punch bread tactics. Lenny Dutton missed out on an end peg but was in second place with 0-8-4.

Any catch reports good, bad, or unusual are always more than welcome, please send to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

13th February 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th February, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The pathway adjacent to the old tip at Grey Mist Mere is very muddy at present as the owners were carrying out some urgent works in an effort to address problems of erosion and remove the sand and soil deposits. Some interim work was carried out but clearly it was too wet and they will have a fresh look at the problem when conditions are more favourable.

A member left several gates open at our Sandiway lakes fisheries on Tuesday with the result that four bags of rubbish, a sink, and pieces of old wood was dumped on our land. Any member identified leaving gates unlocked on any of our fisheries will cease to be a member, quite simply we do not want such morons amongst the ranks of decent anglers.

Chris Wray has been knocking on the door in our Sunday Mersey match Series since July 2017 and Sundays event was his day as he clocked up a win with four small roach for 0-11-0. Yes, it was hard going, even worse than the previous week but a win nevertheless. Ant Higham aka King of the River was in second place 0-10-6. I fear heavy predation by cormorants and the occasional seal that comes upriver with very high tides have certainly decimated our fish stocks, couple this with the erratic weather and it is little wonder that sport is so poor. It is long overdue that the Environment Agency who are obligated to 'maintain, improve, and develop fisheries' got off the fence, especially when you see 1000 cormorants flying onto our shores as reported recently.

We have a team that is currently assessing cormorant damage so I would really appreciate members texting all sightings giving time, date, numbers of birds, and location to our dedicated cormorant line. I did put a different number in my annual membership letter but please use 07538 494353 from which all info can be collated.

No apologies for repeating last weeks 'and it gets worse' opening sentence for our Disabled & Over 60's match report because it has. A change of venue to Woodshaw Reservoir which has been the focus of recent good catch reports by bailiff Chris Connell turned into a lottery as due to heavy sleet and snow water temperature plummeted and only one angler caught. Jonny Johnson had one tiny roach for a 'winning weight' of 0-0-2 which is the lowest ever weight that I have reported. They drew for the remaining prize money which makes the below results humorous. The irony of the situation is that the following day in late afternoon the surface of the fishery was lifting with rising fish, but that's angling. I love our unpredictable sport.

Any reports always more than welcome, including 'humorous bankside happenings' send to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

6th February 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th February, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Thank goodness for our bailiff Chris Connell, and the reports that he sends me for the benefit of our members who read both this column and my blog. On Monday he fished at our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery setting up the pole at 12metres with a 2lbs hook-length, size 20's hook, and single maggot. He fished hard against bankside rushes and caught around fifty roach whilst two colleagues who shall be nameless blanked. Better luck next time guys.

Thanks to the members who turned out for the working party at Offa's Dyke last Sunday to clear up vegetation that was interfering with the otter defences. They are a well organised group of devoted members who look after this water and The Mount at Buckley. Incidentally some scumbag has left a vanload of asbestos garage sheets on our locked carpark at the latter. I just wish they would make themselves known to our group of volunteers who I am sure would love to whisper words of endearment in their shell-likes.

Hard going …. our Sunday Mersey Series was won this week by local match ace Alan Faulkner with 0-14-8, one bite, one skimmer that had a chunk taken out of it by a cormorant. The usual standby winter method of groundbait feeder and maggot. Match organiser Ray Boden was in second place with 0-10-7.

And it gets worse… our Disabled & Over 60's match held again this week at Hough's Bridge on the Bridgewater Canal saw weights half from the previous week. Jimmy Byrne needed only 1-4-12 to take first place.  George Barber fishing his usual bread punch took the runner-up spot with 0-15-8.

Membership cards are starting to go out this week so if you have changed address and not told us you should get in touch as your card will have been posted to the address on your membership record. Members will notice a new initiative on the payment slip that was suggested by a number of members, an 'Otter Fencing Fund' which will help to address the growing possibility of the appearance on our enclosed fisheries by these beautiful creatures that sadly devastate stocks on such waters. It was started with an initial donation of £50 so we will see how it goes.

Any reports always more than welcome, including 'humorous bankside happenings' send to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
