31st July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Last weekend Adam Clarke and his dad paid a visit to the River Alyn, fishing slightly downstream of Ithells Bridge it was a double first for them both, first time on the venue and their first encounter with the lady of the river, the majestic grayling. They had twenty in total ranging from ounces to a few which were weighed at 1-13-0 along with plenty of dace, chub, and brown trout, and even a flounder that was well out of the brackish water of the estuary. The larger specimens took worm and the smaller fish were caught on maggot.

The carp at Grey Mist Mere are generally putting on weight with Mike Boot reporting a new twenty that having been stocked at around 16lbs sent the scales round to 20-3-0. Steve Kemble had three small commons plus a mirror of 20lbs that had dropped a pound from March but had obviously recently spawned from the newish scars which were treated before release. Although the tench fishing seems to have slowed somewhat Ian Boardman still managed a cracking fish of 9-2-0. There seems to be a resurgence of perch with lots of small ones being caught on maggot.

Colin Reece fished at Wide Hole last week and reports catching some quality bream, skimmers, and roach, all taken on maggot and waggler tactics. We are aware that this fishery needs some TLC so get in touch if you fancy helping out. The venue is definitely worth a visit, especially following a hard session as a confidence booster.

I never listen to gossip as a rule but last week a certain well known postman member who I will call Bob was weighing his catch at our Ladies International Fund Match on the Mersey and was definitely up for a section win. Unfortunately as he put his fish in the weighing basket a bream of at least 4lbs made a break for freedom. Now I would have thought a man could easily 'outrun' a fish on dry land but despite Bobs best attempts it evaded capture and in no time had flipped itself back into its natural environment. To add insult to injury according to witnesses its forked tail came out of the water in a final defiant gesture.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports for without them both this column and my blog would be far smaller, so please keep them coming. 24th July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Adam Whelan is no stranger to Cicily Mill Pool, in fact he has I think caught every carp in the fishery over the past few years including one of 21-4-0 no less than four times in the last six months. But the biggie, the 'Cicily Common' has always evaded him. However this week his dad Paul struck gold with the capture of this famous fish and set himself a new personal of 31-4-0. The old warrior was tempted by a pop-up fished over a light scattering of boilies. Ian White reported a good session with crucians, tench, and bream all taken on pole and pellet. This popular fishery is top form and producing quality mixed catches.

Dave Banks reports having some good bream sessions at Worthington Lakes with fish in the 3 to 4lbs bracket. He is only fishing a few rod lengths out on a groundbait feeder set-up and using a washing up liquid top as an improvised bite indicator. He explained that if he uses a quiver tip and tightens up whilst fishing at short distance he inevitably gets snagged on the stone support wall resulting in lots of lost feeders. I must admit it is years since I used something similar but it makes sense as there is little resistance. Nowadays you can buy such a wide variety of ready-made indicators.

I had a general trip around a few fisheries over the weekend and spent ages fascinated watching three carp feeding only a few feet away in the margin at Moore Quarry, I also saw large shoals of roach which are now back in good numbers with really decent specimens being caught. However there wasn't a lot of action on the bank with only one angler admitting to hooking a carp that promptly shed the hook.

Ackers Pit was absolutely alive with fish and I saw a few carp that were competing with the ducks for bread alongside the now well established reed bed. I sat on a bench behind one of the regulars who fishing the pole and soft pellet at 11metres, was catching a roach or a rudd every put-in. He told me that he had caught good number of quality crucians during the past week and that they are really growing well, no doubt on the local bread diet, not so good for the ducks, but the fish are thriving on the stuff. For the record anglers cannot fish on the small rear pool under any circumstances.

Grey Mist Mere is producing quality tench to 9lbs on a variety of baits along with a few carp to just over 20lbs. Eels that members of the Anguilla Club would die for are coming out at over 4lbs in fair numbers and taking most baits.

17th July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Cicily Mill Pool has found its form that following hectic spawning activity saw David Dunbobbin and his pal Dave King enjoy a double helping of cracking sport following a successful Saturday session they both returned the following day for more of the same. They had over twenty five tench to 4lbs, twenty or so bream to 3lbs, thirtyish crucians to 2lbs, two carp of 11 and 10.5lbs, plus plenty of fin perfect roach with some touching a pound. For good measure David even winkled out a pike from under his peg that had been striking at some of the smaller roach he returned.

Dave Harrop took a trip to Budworth Mere this last week, fishing a groundbait feeder packed with fishmeal groundbait, casters, and pellets he ended his session with seven hard fighting hybrids from 3.5 to 5lbs, a bream of 4-7-0, and a small roach. He alternated between 3 red maggots and a small worm tipped with a maggot at forty metres. He reckons he will be back soon for a revenge session following the loss of five large hybrids at the net.

The Mount fishery at Buckley is still producing good sport according to bailiff Brian Jones although there were fewer anglers on the bank over the past weekend. Andy Morris fished on the adjacent small pool and bagged up on roach to 1.5lbs. Steven Jones on the main lake had plenty of hard fighting tench to 2.5lbs while John Wilson got into the large rudd with fish to 1.5lbs. Neil Plunkett had plans thwarted for a river session by the monsoon rains and dropped back to this productive venue for a short session and was rewarded with eight carp. He went home cold, wet, but happy.

Local rod and Mersey master Paul Harding did the double last weekend by winning the Mersey National Series and the 2nd Association (Rod only) matches on consecutive days. Bream featured in both his catches of 8lbs and 4-9-0 and although weights are not yet up to last year's standard they are slowly improving. I wonder if the match record will be beaten again this season.

10th July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

David Robinson and his brother had a mixed evening on the small pool at our Mount fishery at Buckley. David stuck it out for the big fish but the nice surprise was that his brother fishing the waggler and maggot had great sport with lots of fantastic conditioned rudd, roach, hybrids, and perch. Their verdict: "Lovely little pool, very peaceful too. Meanwhile the much larger adjacent water continues to provide good sport with tench and carp.

Anglers have reported that the track to the Dane at Holmes Chapel needs some repair so we will arrange a working party in due course. Also there is presently an electric fence in the field to control grazing cattle; a simple way to avoid a shock is to include a thick plastic bin sack in your kit. They fold up small and come in handy for many uses, not least avoiding a shocking sensation in the nether regions. However regular contributor to this column, Paul Edwards didn't let any of this worry him as he reported chub of 3-10-0, 4-1-0, 4-6-0, 5-5-0, and 5-9-0 all taken on ledgered meat and pellet.

Stuart Clayton and Bob Arnold enjoyed a good session on Rixton Claypits with mixed bags of roach and skimmers to 12ozs, bream to 3lbs and tench to 5lbs for around 25 to 30lbs. Red maggot was the successful bait. A few members have complained about the muddy banks in parts of the fishery, I think the clue is in the name coupled with the amount of rain we have had recently. Of course you can always volunteer for a working party and not simply leave it to others.

In our Disabled & Over 60's match at Stage Lane popular veteran angler Jimmy Byrne had a bonus 4.5lbs bream in his winning 6-8-0 net with George Hollis having a skimmer and roach catch for 5-12-0. The junior series saw Joe Walters take top spot with an all skimmer catch for 5-1-9 whilst Jake Fowles won the intermediate event with an all roach catch of 4-9-11 taken on hemp. Bearing in mind these latter two events are only just over two hours duration the weights are not too bad at all.

It was a battle between siblings at our Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series on Monday with Josh Dawber taking first place with 9-9-0 ahead of brother, Matthew on 8-10-0. Also well done to the WAA (Woodshaw) team of youngsters who came 4th with the WAA team (from Warrington) in 3rd place. I can see some healthy rivalry here in the future, but the important thing is they both are a credit to our club. Thanks to the parents and volunteers whose efforts made their attendance possible. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures in their new team strip.

3rd July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd July 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The June catch of the month junior winner was 14year old Dan Richards with a 22-4-0 carp caught from Cicily Mill Pool which earns him a bait prize valued at over £50 plus a carp care kit. It was you might say a family occasion as the committee made a special award to his dad Mark for his recent catch of a previously unknown mirror of 32-4-0 from Appleton Reservoir. This is the end of this competition in its present format but watch this space.

Paul Edwards had the Ribble at Hurst Green to himself last week that saw him catch four chub with the largest weighing 5-12-0 plus a lone barbel of 8-3-0. He fished an upstream rod and pellet packed groundbait feeder with a 10mm halibut on the hair; and downstream a maggot feeder with a bunch of maggots tied to the hair and a size 10s hook.

Anglers are reporting plenty of small chub and dace from the River Dee but there is a marked absence of barbel and larger fish. However Ian Scarth bucked the trend using maggot feeder tactics on the river at Shocklach. He added regular helpings of hemp in the feeder to attract lots of small chub plus six better stamp fish, the best at 5-12-0. He lost a barbel at the net that he played as he said, "for an age" only for it to slip the hook at the net and sink slowly beneath the surface. Don't forget if you fish this venue park on the left by the farm buildings.

Reports that the tench have started to spawn at Grey Mist Mere will have put paid to many anglers hopes for a tinca session for these olive green beauties. A few decent fish were reported at the back end of last week, the best an almost identical brace by Alan Hancox taken on dead maggot weighing in at 7-4-0 and 7-6-0.

The popular Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series continues to produce some cracking results which saw George Winstanley step up from his last week's runner up position to take the top spot with 9-10-0 and over 3lbs clear of second placed Josh Dawber on 6-8-0.

The very best of luck to our two junior teams who are competing in the Manchester CAGG event At Bradshaw Fisheries on Saturday.
