26th May, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Worthington Lakes are the hot spot this week where bream are dominating catches along with occasional carp. Liam Welsby reports catching eighteen bream averaging 3lbs on legered double maggot using a small groundbait feeder. Lee Newton had a good session with a personal best bream of 7lbs from this popular fishery. Don't forget both the large lakes (Arley & Worthngton) are now open with Adlington opening on the 16th June where it is said that carp over 35lbs have been caught in the past. I'd prefer to see some evidence but am assured it is not just a rumour.

I had a walk around Moore Quarry over the bank holiday weekend and the fish by and large seem to have rid themselves of the fungal growth. It would appear that spawning is imminent and it is best that the fish are now left to complete the process in peace and without any angling pressure. All the members that I have spoken with fully support this action being a precautionary measure to protect their fish.

Our Fosters Pools complex is really proving popular, especially with our younger members who are finding the recently stocked fish an easy target. Jeremy Shaw had a good scrap and a few heart stopping moments with what must be one of the larger carp, a mirror of 16-8-0 from the 'D' fishery. Lots of small rudd from Malpin being taken on maggot. The car park on C & D Pools is closed temporarily due to there being cattle in the field so please park sensibly well away from the cottages.

Only a couple of miles away Woodshaw Reservoir is really fishing well with roach, rudd, chub and crucians featuring in most catches. Maggot is the most popular bait but paste is accounting for the better specimens including tench to 3.5lbs.

Sport at Sandiway Lakes is generally quiet with the just the occasional carp being caught over the weekend, best weighed in at 24-8-0 but members have had quality bream in the 12lbs bracket and one of 16lbs was caught the week previous. I am looking forward to the promised photographs of this specimen. Tench are also featuring in anglers catches with a fish of 11-13-0 being landed on Sunday from a swim hard up against the island.

The Woodshaw Reservoir junior series of eight matches start on Monday draw from 5pm on the car park, entry £2. This popular series run on a points basis by our local bailiff team will as usual finish with a prize giving and barbeque following the last match.

The regular series of National Squad Fund Matches on the Bridgewater Canal start this evening (Thursday), draw 5-30pm on bank London Bridge.

19th May, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

James Simpson dispelled all the web gossip about the demise of the Cicily Mill common when he caught it last week at 32-7-0. It looked truly magnificent on his catch pictures that will join those of other members who have been fortunate to have a close encounter with this celebrity status specimen.

The fish fell to CPM bottom bait fished close to the far bank after James spotted the carp feeding there. Mike Johnson had a catch of 15 tench and 4 bream from the same venue taken on Scopex Squid boilies. Mike Oliver had a good session on the cheap that included a dozen crucian carp, six tench, and a few bream, all for the cost of a tin of Morrison's sweet corn. Caster and maggot though are still the generally favoured baits and account for the majority of members catches.

Sandiway Lakes are both fishing well with quality tench and bream providing the bulk of the action. However carp are starting to feed with bailiffs reporting fish of 28.5 and a massive mirror of 35lbs from the large lake although full details are not available at the time of going to press. Our policy on this fishery of only stocking upper doubles and more recently fish above 20lbs is starting to pay dividends, hopefully to provide rear lumps for future generations of our members as regional temperature shifts and milder winters start to take effect.

Grey Mist Mere is still producing good tench with fish to over 6lbs to most baits and methods. Eight carp over 25lbs have been reported over the past fortnight which for an urban fishery is inexpensive quality fishing. Ian Dolan reports a cracking pole catch of caster caught roach estimated at around 30lbs plus several tench which really put a stretch in his elastic.

High Legh fisheries are worth a visit if it is quantity rather than quality that you are after, but don't discount the larger specimens entirely from this pocket sized fishery as the carp are clearly evident cruising on the surface. Still, for introducing a youngster to our sport there are lots of small tench and hungry rudd to be had without any complicated tackle needed.

On the match scene we are running a regular series of National Squad Fund Matches on the Bridgewater Canal starting next Thursday, 28th May, draw 5-30pm on bank London Bridge. The Disabled & Over 60's match was easily won by David Speight with a comfortable margin of over 8lbs from second placed Barry Owen on 2-2-2. David got amongst the bream for his net of 10-5-4.

12th May, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Choosing the 'Catch of the Month' at our committee meeting on Monday was a difficult task due to the high calibre of entries. After much debate however Luke Banks aged 10years won the junior category of £50 of BaitTech products plus a Korda carp care kit with a cracking common carp of 18-4-0 from Arley Reservoir on our Worthington complex.

This month we gave a special runner up prize to new junior member Adam Thorndell who on his first angling trip, and believe it or believe it not his first cast, he landed a tench of 6-1-0 from the Mist. That's got to be worth a Korda carp care kit. A tench won the seniors weighing in at 8-10-0 taken from Grey Mist Mere by Alan Weaver. Alan legered sweetcorn over a bed of corn and pellet to tempt his specimen that netted him over £100 of BaitTech products plus a carp care kit.

Committee member Ian Clutterbuck reports tench ranging from 6 to 8lbs and bream to 10lbs are being caught from the small lake at Sandiway. He had a brace of these bronze beauties just over 10lbs apiece. A few of the carp we stocked recently are showing with fish to 18lbs falling to a variety of baits.

Marc Dack reckons that Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir alone is worth the full hit of his £40 membership fee. With his fishing mate Andy Leicester he visited the fishery for the first time last Thursday evening after work for a quick hour. Getting lost on the way did not leave a great deal of time for fishing but they still managed 9 crucian carp to 2.5lbs plus tcnch. Saturday saw Marc make a return visit and starting with a small waggler in the margin he soon had 2 crucians before being 'pestered by bits'. A change to a leger set up saw a change of fortunes with another 10 crucians and scores of quality roach with 4 well over a pound. He had at a conservative estimate at least 30lbs of fish.

Our Sunday match fund open on Sunday was held on the furthest extremity of our Trent & Mersey Canal fishing rights at Middlewich. Martin Lenihan easily led the field with an impressive roach catch of just over 10lbs taken on pole and caster. In fact roach dominated the match that suffered somewhat from a seasonal armada of boats, still if they were not there the canal would soon be choked with weed and unfishable.

We stocked the River Alyn on Monday with brown trout, mainly small fish with some just below takeable size to prevent the annual slaughter of past times. Hopefully these fish will provide some sport for those members who like to cast a fly on this tiny river.

5th May, 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Winning the Sid Jones open is becoming something of a habit with local match angler Jim Byrne when on Saturday he took the honours for the second year running. Fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook he put together a nice net of roach which tipped the scales at 6-13-0. Sorry Jim but if you win it next year you do not get to keep it.

Peter Wright reports a good catch of eleven bream from Worthington Lakes taken on double maggot using a small ground-bait feeder. He changed two sweetcorn for a short spell and landed two carp in the 8 to 10lbs range which gave him a few anxious moments on his 2.5lbs hook length.

Tench are going mad at Cicily Mill Pool where members are reporting good catches of these suicidal fish which are taking most baits thrown at them. John Roberts reports catching a crucian carp on corn weighing in at 4-8-0.

Statham Pool is producing some decent mixed catches of roach and skimmers despite the fact the some pegs are still suffering from high water conditions. We are trying to get this problem resolved but it is not as simple as first envisaged.

We are disappointed not to be able to open Ackers Pit at present because quite simply the water is full of algae of the horrible slimy variety. This indicates a problem with water quality which the Environment Agency is currently investigating. We are also working closely with Stockton Heath Parish Council who share our concern. So far the fish do not appear to be affected.

Moore Quarry update: Our bailiffs are still monitoring the situation closely and we are hopeful to open it within the next few weeks. But this all depends on the fish.

Don't forget to join our campaign against blanket free canoe access to our Welsh rivers whilst we anglers have paid hard cash for the privilege to fish then. Visit our website for further details at http://warrington-anglers.org.uk
