16th April 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Many thanks to Grey Mist regular Philip Brown who agreed to fish the water for an Anglers Mail tench article which appeared in last weeks edition. It was superb and I am certain will be a great help to both fellow and future members. I visited the Mist myself today on a management issue and chatting to members all except one who was targeting carp had caught tench. By far the stars of the day were Paul Jones and Chris Penny who fishing adjacent pegs and encouraged by Philips article really got amongst the tincas in what Paul described as a red-letter day. Both fished feeder tactics introducing chopped worms with small red worms on the hook. Chris ended up with nine with the best at 7-7-0 but his PB set on this fishery seven years ago at 8-7-0 remains unchanged. Whereas Paul ended up with sixteen fish and surpassed his previous PB of 6-5-0 no less than five times with the biggest at 7-11-0. Fellow member Graham Ashton reported catching eleven fish last Tuesday with the best at 8-7-0 and as I left the fishery, he had just caught his first tench of the day.

Some encouraging recent carp catches from both Sandiway Lakes and Moore Quarry that certainly back up our current annual top-up stocking policy. The good news is that these fish have been consistently putting on weight and are producing some stunning specimens.

Dave Stansfield managed to slot in a brief two-and-a-half-hour session on Budworth Mere last Wednesday where he half expected to 'be going through the motions' but at least he would be out in the fresh air. Well, with expectations not too high his catch of eleven decent roach with one he estimated at around the 1.5lbs mark plus a single bream were very welcome. Dave fished a heavy groundbait feeder and double red maggot.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge on Monday ended up with a tie for first place between Graham Belton and Rod Fraser both with a weight of 3-3-0. Rod had mainly small roach on bread punch and pinkie whilst Graham stuck it out on his privately sourced small red worms that attracted a small skimmer, a few small roach, but more importantly a bonus 2lbs perch. Not too far behind third placed Alan Brown put together a net of roach for 3-1-14.

Keep those catch reports coming, as they help follow members to weigh up how waters are fishing to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.
