26th February 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Northern Angling Show at the Manchester Arena this past weekend which Warrington Anglers Association have attended since its inception was again an enjoyable event. Our 'team' always look forward to meeting up with both existing and new members who visit our stand. As things quietened down towards the end of the Saturday session, we started a new trend with the first recorded NAS tucker trial when following a £5 bet Ade Green ate a boilie presented on a cocktail stick that had been dipped in some brown goo. The 'not for human consumption' was ignored, a fiver was at stake, despite the possibility of the trots or worse. It was recorded, but language prevented its showing on our members Facebook page!

It started a few weeks ago on Grey Mist when the tench awakened from their winter quietude and got their heads down to feed on anglers' baits. Carp soon followed the trend, no doubt helped by the unseasonal warm weather and although the tench action has slowed fish are still being caught. On Tuesday afternoon three carp were landed, two weighing in at over 22lbs and one of 23lbs. Appleton Reservoir is also producing a few carp catches but Alan Grainger fishing waggler and maggot enjoyed a short two-hour session catching quality roach while trying out a new rod. He reckoned that he had around twenty fish with some around the pound mark.

Our Sunday Mersey Series at Mersey Walk saw Neil Buist put in a winning appearance when fishing pole and maggot catching roach to 8ozs he almost doubled the weight of second placed Ed Frangleton who fished the same method.  Neil put 10-6-0 on the scales against Ed's 5-9-0. The only disappointment was news that another seal has come over the weir in the high tide and will have a devastating effect on existing fish stocks whilst now trapped between the two weirs. In the past few years the majority of specimen carp, pike, and bream numbers on this short stretch have been decimated by such visitations. I understand these animals have been removed in the past from other river locations for the good of their own health but nobody seems to want to do anything in this area.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match held on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton saw Barry Chambers miss the draw and instead he fished a pleasure session at Preston Brook, although poles apart he certainly made up for it when he had a fish every cast. In the match Alan Brown was a clear winner with 6lbs of roach and perch caught on pole, alternating between bread punch and pinkie. On the next peg Jimmy Byrne took second place with a weight of 4-15-7.

Keep those catch reports coming, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to weigh up how waters are fishing to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

If you haven't received your 2019 membership by now please get in touch as soon as possible. WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.

19th February 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Grey Mist is again producing more tench catches for members who enjoy catching these olive-green beauties. I was chatting to Steve Roffey on Thursday afternoon who had already caught five when after a dropped run he was into another one, a male which weighed 6-14-0. We were watching it swim away when his other rod went, result a female of 6-4-0. On leaving Steve I noticed members watching John Bibby playing a good fish adjacent the car park and as you would I stopped to see the result. It wasn't too long before a cracking carp lay in the net that weighed in at 18lbs on the nose. Phil Brown also had a couple of tench on the same day, the guy is besotted and I cannot say as I blame him. The Mist has to be one of the most consistent tench and carp fisheries in the Northwest.

Neil Plunkett was also out on Thursday and decided on a trip to Rixton Claypits where consistent good sport has been the case on a number of his visits. He set up a quiver tip with his reel loaded with 6lbs main line, a 3lbs hook-length, and groundbait feeder with double maggot on the size 16 hook.  His first fish was a bream of 4lbs followed by eight tench, smallest 3.5lbs and the largest at 5lbs. I believe he was going cod fishing the following day, I hope he enjoyed similar luck.

This weekend Warrington Anglers Association will as usual be manning their stand 426 at the Northern Angling Show so hope to see both existing and new members at this premier angling event.

Our Sunday Mersey Series at Mersey Walk saw an improvement in catches and winner John Green put twenty roach to 6ozs on the scales taken on feeder and maggot, adding another seventeen smaller ones on pole and maggot for 5-12-0. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 3-5-0 catching roach to just under 6ozs on the tip alternating between bread and maggot on the hook.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match at Hough's Bridge saw Derek Bibby take the win with 5-5-2 of small roach and perch taken on pole and pinkie. As the previous week Jimmy Byrne stayed in second place with a weight of 4-6-0 of small fish. At least one angler broke the small fish mould with a bonus bream of 2lbs, not a monster but more than welcome when added to his 2lbs of roach to give him third place.

12th February 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Philip Brown has lately had a number of enjoyable sessions on Grey Mist, starting last Thursday when despite the high winds he caught five tench with the best at 7-12-0. All fish were caught using a block-end feeder with three maggots on the hook and fake corn on the hair. At the Mist again on Monday he only had two fish, a tench of 5-12-0 topped by a mirror carp weighing in at 20-4-0. The following day he had two tench around the 6.5lbs mark. Also, overnight on Saturday other members caught a number of carp with several in the 20lbs bracket plus a few tench.

Still plenty of predator action on the Bridgewater Canal where on Sunday Shaun Kennedy reports catching three perch, best around 2lbs and two pike probably 7 or 8lbs apiece fishing between. He was using a green fluorescent rubber drop-shot lure to 5lbs BS line. Just a reminder to any members who themselves fancy trying their hand that they should always carry an unhooking mat in the interests of fish welfare.

Thanks to the members who have posted helpful advice on our Facebook page regarding the new stretch on the Weaver Navigation. The nearest postcode to the start of the stretch at Frodsham swing-bridge is WA7 3GF which takes you to houses approximately 100 yards from the bridge. Also, I have had some encouraging phone conversations with members who have fished the Navigation in the past when they caught mixes of roach, hybrids, skimmers, perch, and quality bream. To add to this some years ago I took a fish-finder along the navigation which showed large shoals of fish in parts. Definitely worth a look and I would welcome any catch reports.

Our Sunday Mersey Series at Victoria Park was really hard going and new member Kevin Hall needed only 1-8-0 to take his first win with WAA. Kevin fished a groundbait feeder with red maggot and pinkie on the hook to catch small roach and hybrids. Second placed Mike Dench also used feeder tactics for his two fish, a tiny roach and a bonus chub for a weight of 0-13-0.

Following a week's rest due to the previous weeks frozen canal the regulars were happy to be back on the cut for Monday's Disabled & Over 60's Match at Hough's Bridge. George Hollis held off second placed Jimmy Byrne when he put together his winning catch of 4-1-10 made up of roach and perch caught on bread and pinkie. Jimmy weighed 3-3-8.

5th February 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I know a few members have visited the new stretch on the Weaver navigation which runs from the swing bridge on the A56 at Frodsham (details are in my annual letter). A new lock which is clearly labelled has now been fitted which can be opened with our standard key.  Committee member Mike Dench tried his hand for a couple of hours today but didn't even have a sniff of a bite, not surprising really as the water had been frozen until now. However, I am reliably informed that there have been reasonable catches of quality roach during warmer weather. It is what I would term 'wild fishing' where you go and make your own swim and accept the challenge. Time will tell.

I did mention last week that the new 2019 memberships had begun to be posted out, well, the last remnants are now in the post. On receipt the 2018 one is invalid and the new one must be paid before fishing any Association waters. If you haven't received yours by weekend please do not hesitate to give me a ring on the number below.

Our Sunday Mersey Series at Mersey Walk understandably with all the snow melt water saw low weights. Jimmy Byrne was the clear winner when he fished bread punch on a groundbait feeder set-up. He caught twenty roach for a weight of 3-4-14. Mike Dench and Roy Everson were joint runners-up with 0-9-11 where Mike had only a single roach whereas Roy managed four smaller roach.

Monday's Disabled & Over 60's Match on an iced over Bridgewater Canal was understandably cancelled. A disappointment I am sure to the regulars who week after week support this fixture. I would describe them in the nicest way as a cracking bunch who are always willing to welcome and help newcomers. So, if you fancy fishing matches in a friendly atmosphere where you will meet new friends and undoubtedly enjoy the banter join Warrington Anglers and give it a try.
