8th August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th August, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A very rare report indeed from Andy Barnes who fished our stretch of the Trent at Alrewas this week. Before fishing he spoke with the farmer who said that he had only seen three anglers fish the venue in the past five years and they only had small fish! Obviously that information was not exactly a confidence builder. Undeterred Andy set up and started feeding four or five maggots when suddenly the float shot under, he missed the bite but the maggots were smashed. Dace, small chub, and perch followed before he moved swim and had a fish every cast but much of the same so another move and a better roach about 8oz followed by others of the same stamp. Andy saw some better fish rolling but nevertheless it was a good evening fishing on a new venue. Could be worth a visit as Andy recons the fish had never seen a hook before.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week fished at Kingsway Allotments saw match organiser Ray Boden  notch up another win with a nice mixed net of roach and perch for 14-1-0 taken on pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne was second with 13-12-0 caught on the same method. With the current good weights the question has been asked, "Where do they go in winter?" Well, I would hazard a guesss that they go upriver to the old arm behind Thelwall Eyes where there is more cover from the cormorant predator pest.

The Challenge Shield Match fished on the Mersey at Victoria Park saw Rod Frazer really turn up the heat with a cracking winning weight of 18-7-0 caught alternating between pole and maggot feeder methods. His net was made up of roach, perch, hybrids to 10oz, with the best fish a perch of 1.5lbs. His partner in crime Steve Brooks took the runner-up spot with a similar mix of fish, the best a chub of 1.5lbs taken on pole and maggot for 15-12-0. Next Sunday it is a case of 'leave your poles at home' as it is Rod Only Match.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery. WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks took an impressive win leaving second placed Alan Birchall trailing by a margin of 6lbs. Geoff weighed in a mix of roach and bream for a weight of 17-6-0 with Alan on 11-6-0.

The Environment Agency Fisheries Team who are no doubt rushed off their feet this hot weather kindly checked out Cicily Mill Pool on Monday following the fish kill just over a week ago when we lost thirty to forty older bream and small fish due to low oxygen levels and high temperatures. Anyway, the upshot is that they confirmed our actions in closing the fishery and so until it gets back to normal it will remain closed. Hopefully as a bonus if there is such a thing it will give us time to carry out much needed work….so any volunteers please get in touch with me so we can get a team together.

The recent work organised by Halton Council on the Sankey St Helens Canal at Carterhouse saw rafts of weed removed and deposited along the far bank to allow the escape back into the water of invertebrates. However, the surface duckweed is a different issue as I think many are of the opinion that all this would have also been removed, well unfortunately at the rate this reproduces it will soon be back as currently there are no chemical control measures as the product successfully used by another local club has been taken off the market and the firm ceased trading. Again, many thanks to Halton Borough Council.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.
