28th August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Mike Pritchard is one of a minority who take their grandchildren fishing. He recently introduced four years old Amelia Rose-Lily Davies to our sport and she has taken to it like a duck to water, Mike reckons that she is a natural. Friday saw the pair on the River Mersey at Kingsway Allotments where Amelia was using a telescopic whip that was her mother's when she first started fishing. Feeding maggots this mad keen youngster caught six perch and a roach and kissed every fish before she put them back in the river. Needless to say, she loves going fishing with her grandad. Come on you dads and grandparents take the kids out fishing after all said and done they are the future of our sport.

There were no reports of carp caught over the Bank Holiday, nudge nudge, wink wink…if you believe that you'll believe anything. I'm sure members targeting these fish are quite happy as I understand there were a few PB's landed. Another plus is that there were some quality tench and bream that benefit from the high protein baits. Whilst on a visit to Grey Mist last week there was some really encouraging news that small tench are being caught by members float fishing. These have been absent for some time so let's hope they can evade the cormorant scourge and reach maturity.

Some decent roach to 2lbs have been reportedly cropping up in catches on the Trent & Mersey Canal so again good news indeed. Ian Simms fished pole and caster over hemp on the stick-ups past the boatyard on Sunday and ended up with around 20lbs of roach and skimmers

.

Our Saturday Mersey Match Series was again fished this week at Kingsway Allotments where local match ace Jimmy Byrne fished a groundbait feeder and maggot for a bream and skimmer catch that tipped the scales at 22-5-4. Jim Gannon fishing the same method was in second place with 12-0-0.

Jimmy Byrne held on to his winning form to take first place again the next day on Sundays Mersey Series match fished at Mersey Walk. He stuck to the previous days winning combination of groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 18-14-0 made up of skimmers and silver bream. Alan Birchall who fished pole and maggot was the runner-up with an all roach catch

of
11-12-0.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished this week on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery at Wigan. Derek Bibby put together a net of skimmers and roach for a winning weight of 6-15-4. The following three places were close but Jimmy Byrne took second place with a catch of a brace of crucians and roach for 5-13-0.

Cicely Mill is still shut until further notice.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.

21st August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Member and self-admitted amateur stick-float angler Steve Cartledge had a two-hour session on the River Mersey on Wednesday evening and chose a peg near Victoria park. The result was a bite every run through the swim with rudd, roach to 6oz, perch, dace, and skimmers. He commented, "Great Sport. An expert would empty the place." Irrespective of that comment it is what the individual angler enjoys from his sport and I know Steve was more than happy with his short but productive session. For the record some 'experts' can certainly talk the talk but that's as far as it goes.

Sunday morning saw Anthony Rough fishing his favourite stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury for the first time this season. The water level wasn't too bad considering the long spell of dry weather and fishing maggots trotting a small Avon float the fishing was superb from the off. Anthony caught forty plus dace, seven brown trout, four grayling, a small chub, and his first ever perch from the stretch which was just over a pound. He reckons it is well worth a visit despite the rough track which he negotiates at no more than walking pace.

Dave Gardner tried his luck at Ackers Pit this past week where at last following the long dry spell the fresh water feed from the Bridgewater Canal is again flowing through and over the outflow. He had two mirror carp of 5.5 and 6.5lbs and half a dozen roach 6-8oz. He fished a waggler catching on maggot, sweetcorn, and with his penchant for unusual baits rowan berries.

Kingsway Allotments is really providing consistently good sport for our Mersey Match Series devotees where this week Rod Frazer fishing pole and maggot put a mixed net of roach and perch on the scales for a winning weight of 10-3-0. After a week out of the frame match organiser Ray Boden was back taking second place with 9-3-0 on the same method. No bonus bream showed up in this week's event.

As per the previous week eights got even better the following day on Sundays Mersey Series event at Victoria Park. Ant Higham A.K.A 'The King of the River' stamped his authority with a cracking winning weight of 20-2-0 made up of bream and skimmers taken on ground bait feeder and caster. There was a tie for second place when Neil Davies and Mike Dench both weighed in 13-7-0. The both used different methods, Neil pole and caster and Mike an 8metre whip with hemp and caster. You can frame with almost any method which makes the river a fair venue.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Road. Billy Bull put together a net of roach and a bonus tench of 2lbs for a winning weight of 8-0-12. He fished the pole and caster at 12metres. George (the breadman) Barber was the runner-up with 6-4-0 of roach.  I don't usually mention third place but Warrington Anglers Vice President drew his third end peg in as many weeks which he made pay with 5-14-0.

Cicely Millis still shut although some idiot has been removing the closuresigns.

14th August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

!4th August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our smaller 17.5acre lake at Sandiway will forever be engraved the memory of Millie Wailes aged 6 years who on Sunday fishing with her dad Darren clocked up her first ever twenty. The memorable mirror was marginally over the magical 20lbs which is the target for most budding carp anglers, and some with a great deal more bankside hours under their belts. The question is where will Millie go from here…watch this space.

There is no doubt that due to the efforts of our team of volunteers who look after Woodshaw Reservoir visiting members cannot fail to be suitably impressed with this Association owned fishery. Dave Gardner and his fishing mate ken Hewitt are definitely among them as they returned this past week to enjoy a cracking mornings fishing in pleasant surroundings. Ken's tally was 18 perch 4oz to 1.5lbs, a bream, and a half dozen or so roach taken mostly on maggot. Dave had 30 perch of the same stamp, 2 crucians the best a shade over 2lb, chub, and a bream taken on maggot, meat, and strangest of all blackberry.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week fished again at Kingsway Allotments saw Martin Kettle really draw on past match winning methods to fish a whip to hand loose-feeding maggots to win with a weight of 14-2-5. Martin added a bonus bream of 6lbs nice to his mixed net of roach and perch. Second placed Chris Wray by contrast fished the more usual Mersey method of a groundbait feeder and maggots for 14-8-0 which included bream of 6lbs and 4lbs plus roach and perch.

Weights got even better the following day on our Rod Only Match at Mersey Walk when Steve Brooks fished my favourite method, the stick-float to win with 17-4-0 made up of roach, perch, and skimmers taken on maggot. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with 15-9-0 and a similar mix of fish taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. As you can see from the weekends results you can frame with almost any method which makes the river as fair avenue as you can get.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge. Jimmy Byrne put together a net of roach and perch for a winning weight of 8-3-4. He fished the pole at 11metres alternating between pinkie and caster for better stamp of fish. Rod Frazer was second with 7-6-8.

Good news this week thanks to the rain the Bridgewater Canal levels are back almost to normal which meant that the feed from the canal to Ackers Pit is flowing again. Thanks to the guys who manned the pump in the interim to keep fresh water going into Ackers. Cicily Mill Pool still remains closed and we are looking at High Legh fishery which may be closed if there is no improvement in its algae problem.

8th August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th August, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A very rare report indeed from Andy Barnes who fished our stretch of the Trent at Alrewas this week. Before fishing he spoke with the farmer who said that he had only seen three anglers fish the venue in the past five years and they only had small fish! Obviously that information was not exactly a confidence builder. Undeterred Andy set up and started feeding four or five maggots when suddenly the float shot under, he missed the bite but the maggots were smashed. Dace, small chub, and perch followed before he moved swim and had a fish every cast but much of the same so another move and a better roach about 8oz followed by others of the same stamp. Andy saw some better fish rolling but nevertheless it was a good evening fishing on a new venue. Could be worth a visit as Andy recons the fish had never seen a hook before.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week fished at Kingsway Allotments saw match organiser Ray Boden  notch up another win with a nice mixed net of roach and perch for 14-1-0 taken on pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne was second with 13-12-0 caught on the same method. With the current good weights the question has been asked, "Where do they go in winter?" Well, I would hazard a guesss that they go upriver to the old arm behind Thelwall Eyes where there is more cover from the cormorant predator pest.

The Challenge Shield Match fished on the Mersey at Victoria Park saw Rod Frazer really turn up the heat with a cracking winning weight of 18-7-0 caught alternating between pole and maggot feeder methods. His net was made up of roach, perch, hybrids to 10oz, with the best fish a perch of 1.5lbs. His partner in crime Steve Brooks took the runner-up spot with a similar mix of fish, the best a chub of 1.5lbs taken on pole and maggot for 15-12-0. Next Sunday it is a case of 'leave your poles at home' as it is Rod Only Match.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery. WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks took an impressive win leaving second placed Alan Birchall trailing by a margin of 6lbs. Geoff weighed in a mix of roach and bream for a weight of 17-6-0 with Alan on 11-6-0.

The Environment Agency Fisheries Team who are no doubt rushed off their feet this hot weather kindly checked out Cicily Mill Pool on Monday following the fish kill just over a week ago when we lost thirty to forty older bream and small fish due to low oxygen levels and high temperatures. Anyway, the upshot is that they confirmed our actions in closing the fishery and so until it gets back to normal it will remain closed. Hopefully as a bonus if there is such a thing it will give us time to carry out much needed work….so any volunteers please get in touch with me so we can get a team together.

The recent work organised by Halton Council on the Sankey St Helens Canal at Carterhouse saw rafts of weed removed and deposited along the far bank to allow the escape back into the water of invertebrates. However, the surface duckweed is a different issue as I think many are of the opinion that all this would have also been removed, well unfortunately at the rate this reproduces it will soon be back as currently there are no chemical control measures as the product successfully used by another local club has been taken off the market and the firm ceased trading. Again, many thanks to Halton Borough Council.
