31st July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The hot weather and almost no fresh water entering Cicily Mill Pool had an adverse effect on this shallow fishery where our bailiffs this week removed around thirty to forty bream and skimmers that had been dead around five days having perished along with this years fry in the low oxygen conditions. A visit from the Environment Agency Fisheries saw that oxygen levels had improved but water temperatures were still quite high. Hopefully the recent rains will have a positive effect. The fishery has been closed until the situation improves.

But for the efforts of our local volunteers another shallow fishery could easily have gone the same way but thankfully water pumped from the Bridgewater Canal and recent rains restored the balance at Ackers Pit.

This week thanks go to Halton Council who have arranged for a mechanical weed removal boat to remove weed that has taken over on the Sankey St Helens Canal since the Mersey Gateway Bridge works. Despite many suggestions any chemical treatment of weed in low oxygen conditions would have a devastating adverse effect on any fishery.

The change of venue to Mersey Walk on our Saturday Mersey Series this week saw committee member Mike Dench take his first win of the year with a bonus bream of 5lbs taken on pole and maggot. He added roach and perch for a total weight of 11-15-0. Dave Brooks was in second place fishing the same method with 9-6-0. It was great to see international match legend Kevin Ashurst back on the UK match scene and drawing coin.

The Tom James Open Match fished on the Mersey at Kingsway Allotments saw Jimmy Byrne notch up another win with a weight of 11-6-0 of skimmers, roach, and perch taken on feeder and maggot tactics. Rod Frazer took second place alternating between pole and feeder for 9-10-0

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal from peg one at Waters Meet, Preston Brook towards Warrington. George Hollis put together a net of skimmers and roach for a winning weight of 6-5-4 taken on both pinkie and caster. Runner-up Graham Belton fished pole and pinkie for an all roach catch of 5-10-11. Nineteen fished.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.

24th July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

24th July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Who would have believed that the Mersey match record would be smashed this week on our Sunday Series fished at Victoria Park. Winner, John Green shocked everyone when he weighed in eleven bream, best 7lbs and two perch for a total weight of 51-1-0. John fished a groundbait feeder with worm on the hook. Rod Frazer was the runner-up again with 15-3-0 of roach, perch, and hybrids taken on pole and maggot.

By contrast new member Bryan White and Neil Jones fished the Mersey (bolo style) for the first time using maggot and had a good day catching lots of perch and roach. There was nothing of any size, but all fish were in pristine condition and a childhood ambition was achieved - catching coarse fish from our own river!  Bryan has got the bug for river fishing again now and looks forward to trying other WAA rivers.

Despite the current low water conditions on our rivers Mike Dench visited our stretch of the Ribble armed only with a rod, small box of terminal tackle, and a tub of worms. There were no salmon on this trip but he did catch half a dozen chub to 2lbs and three trout. When fish spotting  he scoped a couple of salmon, a few large chub, barbel, and shoals of dace.

Whilst on a motorcycle /camping trip around wales/Shropshire this past week Keith Buckley decided to take the opportunity to fish some of our club rivers around that area. The first was Montford Bridge on the River Severn where he chose to use stick float with centre pin and 5-piece travel trotting rod, and despite the very low water he caught a steady number of small chub to 12oz and dace, until lots of bleak homed in on his loose fed maggots. The next day saw him on our Llanymynech stretch of the River Vyrnwy where he found a deep pool in the middle of the beat. Fishing the same tactics as the day before he caught a few small chub and dace but the bleak were a nuisance so he moved to the first accessible peg at the beginning of the beat where the water was shallow and ran to an overhanging willow tree. On the first cast Keith was into a larger chub of about 2lbs followed by 3 more at about a pound and guiding his float past the tree to more open water he was getting some nice dace. The following day Keith decided to give the river another go using a swim feeder. He made a peg right at the end of the beat just before a bend and was casting upstream toward a large tree partially submerged in about 4ft of slack water where he caught 8 chub from 12oz to about a pound, mixed in with a few dace. I would point out that this is 'wild river fishing' where there are no constructed pegs on these rivers.

Well done to our Warrington Gold Team who won bronze at the Angling Trust Ladies National Angling Championship at Weston Pools Fishery on Saturday. Starlets which included local rod Helen Dagnall were the gold medal winners for the fourth time with Lindholme Ladies taking silver. Emma Drysdale, in our team was third overall.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week at Kingsway Allotments was a close-run thing with Jimmy Byrne the winner by an ounce with 10-15-0 of roach, perch, and skimmers taken on pole and maggot. Second placed Neil Davies fished the identical method but at the scales was that vital ounce short as the scales pointer stopped at 10-14-0. Gutted or what…but that's angling.

Jimmy Byrne kept up his winning record to take top spot again on our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge. Jimmy fished pole and maggot to take mainly roach and small skimmers for a weight of 5-12-12. The runner-up was Alan Brown with 5-11-0.

Tit-bits:- Lots of roach and perch plus a few bream being caught at Worthington Lakes. Appleton Reservoir is another top roach venue and not too bad for carp!

17th July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Gary Sharples and newbie to angling Michael Forrester enjoyed a day at our small Mowpin fishery at Wigan. As luck had it they had the water to themselves and began by feeding pellet and grated luncheon meat. It didn't take long until Michael was into his first fish, a roach of a few ounces soon followed by others. Gary had a 2.5lbs common on luncheon meat and then the rudd moved in attracted by loose-fed red maggot. All things being considered there were no records broken but both anglers enjoyed their day set in pleasant and peaceful surroundings.

Dave Gardner fished High Legh Fisheries on Friday with his fishing pal Ken Watkin. Dave found it slow going whist Ken was bagging up on rudd, roach, and a couple of perch. Dave landed a carp and a couple of roach around the pound mark but the target carp were all congregated under the trees out of reach. However, both enjoyed a pleasant days fishing which is what our sport is all about.

Our bailiff reports on Sandiway Lakes are showing some good tench catches to 8lbs from the large lake and the small lake plenty of carp to 25lbs plus tench which always seem to be smaller on the 17.5acre water. However, I have heard on the grapevine (not yet confirmed) that a forty has come out of this fishery. This Saturday is the Endurance Riding Event where riders will be passing through using the centre track bridleway.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week was won for by match organiser Ray Boden with a margin of almost 2.5lbs over the runner-up. Ray fished pole and maggot tactics for a net of roach and perch for 8-10-0. Chris Wray fishing the same method took second place with a weight of 6-3-0.

Sunday's Briars Cup Open fished on the Mersey at Victoria Park was won by veteran match angler Alan Falkner with a catch of a few hybrids to 6oz, roach, and perch taken on pole and maggot tactics for a weight of 13-12-0 and a 4.75lbs margin over the runner-up Rod Frazer who had a similar mix of fish for 9-0-0. These weights are really great considering that due to the England football match it was reduced to four hours. Alan Faulkner was so overwhelmed with the win that he went for a quick dip as he was putting the fish back.

Jimmy Byrne won our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge on the opposite side of the bridge than the week previous. Jimmy weighed in an all roach catch of small roach 3-9-4 taken on both bread punch and pinky. Bernie Lee was in second place with 3-4-0.

10th July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Head Bailiff Jay Makin was both wringing wet with sweat and bitten from head to toe by midges following his hard graft along with fellow volunteers at Saturday's working party on Grey Mist. So much so that he almost had second thoughts about fishing the venue that night, however he bivvied up and was rewarded with two mirror carp, losing a third in snags. The fish were in stunning condition and weighed 18 and 21lbs. He also included a decent sized tench which thrive on angler's high protein baits helping to make this fishery a popular venue for members targeting these red eyed olive beauties.

Steven Crewe and his son Lewis aged 12 years enjoyed their visit to our Offa's Dyke fishery at Treuddyn on Monday. They both fished a whip and maggot and enjoyed good sport with small perch and silver fish with Lewis catching between thirty to forty roach. Steven made the observation that although sport was good there was a lack of larger fish. We have re-stocked the fishery following otter attacks with bream and carp and installed fencing with a hotwire to deter such predators.

Ackers Pit has suffered these past number of weeks during the unusually hot weather as the water supply from the Bridgewater Canal has been out of action. Thanks to the efforts of our local bailiff Mike Monks who on several occasions has manned a small pump adjacent to the source of the canal supply there has been some oxygenated water going into the pit. Other fisheries are not so lucky and quite honestly, we are in the lap of the gods as a number are short of water. It comes as no surprise that sport is almost none existent as Steven Crewe and son Lewis can vouch following their short session at the fishery on Tuesday.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week drawn at Kingsway Allotments was won for the second week in succession by Dave Brooks fishing on pole and maggot to end up with a net of roach and perch for 14-8-0. Martin Lenihan fishing the same method took second place with a weight of 8-12-0.

Sunday's Mersey Series was won by well known Northern match angler Danny Sixsmith with a catch of small skimmers, roach, and perch using pole and maggot tactics for a weight of 12-15-0. The runner-up was Barry Chambers with a similar mix of fish for 11-11-0 using the same method.

Lennie Dutton won our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge. Lennie fished the pole and alternated baits between bread punch and pinky to take mainly roach caught on the drop for a weight of 6-8-8. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 3-7-2.

3rd July 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

3rd July, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Thanks to our dedicated working party members most of the essential works around our waters and elsewhere are possible which keeps the price of our membership down. This week peg work has been taking place at Sandiway lakes where we have run out of scaffold poles so job stopped until we source some. Meanwhile the guys at Wigan have been busy strimming and keeping the fisheries in that vicinity in tip top condition. On Saturday there is a working party on Grey Mist that kicks off at 10am all welcome if you wish to help. There may be some swim disturbance but this as always will be kept to a minimum.

In light of complaints from members regarding some waters being fully booked for night sessions it is apparent that some members have neither turned up or cancelled their bookings. This is unfair so at Mondays monthly committee meeting it was decided in the interests of fair play to all that for a trial period all members must be on the fishery they have booked before 9pm on the night in question. If you have to cancel your booking it must be by text before 4pm on the day at the latest to allow others to be offered the place. Failure to turn up or cancel will result in an automatic one month suspension of your night fishing.

There has been a cracking catch reported by new member Matty Carter in the shape of a 27-4-0 grass carp from Moore Quarry which is his new PB. Well done Matty for both the catch and sharing it with other members. The Quarry is really fishing well at the moment for all species.

There has also been some good sport reported from Worthington Lakes where Arley, the middle water has been literally on fire producing a good mixed catch of fish that included a couple of decent bream for brand new member Colin Wood. The water levels are understandably down slightly but there is no detrimental effect on the fishing.

Our Saturday Mersey Series this week was won by Dave Brooks on pole and maggot with a net of roach and perch for 11-8-0. Match organiser Ray Boden's luck was in as fishing the same method he snared a 2.5lbs bream to boost his weight to 9-12-0 to take second place.

Sunday's Sid Jones Open on the Mersey was won by Alan Morris using his vintage pole of forty years with a catch of small skimmers, roach, and perch for 6-9-8. The runner-up was committee member Ade Green who lost out by a cat's whisker with a weight of 6-9-0. Both fished the same method using maggot.

This week our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on our Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery where both first and second places came from adjacent pegs. Winner Alan Birchall weighed 8-2-0 of roach and crucians. Second placed John Gary had a similar catch for 7-10-0.

Your catch reports are always welcome, but more important, it is nice to let follow members know how waters are fishing. Please email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
