13th February 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th February, 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The pathway adjacent to the old tip at Grey Mist Mere is very muddy at present as the owners were carrying out some urgent works in an effort to address problems of erosion and remove the sand and soil deposits. Some interim work was carried out but clearly it was too wet and they will have a fresh look at the problem when conditions are more favourable.

A member left several gates open at our Sandiway lakes fisheries on Tuesday with the result that four bags of rubbish, a sink, and pieces of old wood was dumped on our land. Any member identified leaving gates unlocked on any of our fisheries will cease to be a member, quite simply we do not want such morons amongst the ranks of decent anglers.

Chris Wray has been knocking on the door in our Sunday Mersey match Series since July 2017 and Sundays event was his day as he clocked up a win with four small roach for 0-11-0. Yes, it was hard going, even worse than the previous week but a win nevertheless. Ant Higham aka King of the River was in second place 0-10-6. I fear heavy predation by cormorants and the occasional seal that comes upriver with very high tides have certainly decimated our fish stocks, couple this with the erratic weather and it is little wonder that sport is so poor. It is long overdue that the Environment Agency who are obligated to 'maintain, improve, and develop fisheries' got off the fence, especially when you see 1000 cormorants flying onto our shores as reported recently.

We have a team that is currently assessing cormorant damage so I would really appreciate members texting all sightings giving time, date, numbers of birds, and location to our dedicated cormorant line. I did put a different number in my annual membership letter but please use 07538 494353 from which all info can be collated.

No apologies for repeating last weeks 'and it gets worse' opening sentence for our Disabled & Over 60's match report because it has. A change of venue to Woodshaw Reservoir which has been the focus of recent good catch reports by bailiff Chris Connell turned into a lottery as due to heavy sleet and snow water temperature plummeted and only one angler caught. Jonny Johnson had one tiny roach for a 'winning weight' of 0-0-2 which is the lowest ever weight that I have reported. They drew for the remaining prize money which makes the below results humorous. The irony of the situation is that the following day in late afternoon the surface of the fishery was lifting with rising fish, but that's angling. I love our unpredictable sport.

Any reports always more than welcome, including 'humorous bankside happenings' send to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for 2018 night permits/membership renewals, new members, subscriptions, and any queries.
