29th August, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Mike Dench is an all-round angler enjoying all aspects of our sport, last week he was salmon fishing on the River Ribble and Bank Holiday Monday saw him targeting the bream on Budworth Mere. He started off his session by introducing half a dozen Jaffa sized balls of groundbait which he topped up regularly whilst waiting for the bronze beauties to find his feed. Casting a heavy slider and double maggot he was soon into roach to just over a pound and then out of the blue bingo, his first bream, soon followed by another. Changing over to a feeder everything went quiet, nothing, not a twitch. Thankfully a change to worm saw eight more bream in the net, all between 6 to 8lbs.

Paul Bibby reports having 'a field day' at Ackers Pit on Saturday catching mainly small roach in the 2 to 6oz bracket. It was back to basics using his favourite method of running line with a flat one-inch peacock like we used to years ago. As Paul said, he enjoyed a no hassle, easy fishing, and relaxing day, despite having to watch a pair of feeding cormorants that rested occasionally on the footpath undeterred by people or dogs walking past.

On Monday, our Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Mersey as a change from the Bridgewater Canal and saw Alan Brown make the most of an end peg draw. He fished pole and maggot to secure a win with a net of roach and small skimmers for 5lbs exactly. Bud Lee was second with 4-1-7.

Weaver veteran Rod Frazer won our Mersey Tuesday series match with 10-9-0 of roach and perch caught on the usual pole and maggot. Ray Boden was the runner-up with 10-3-0. Ray upped his game and won our Saturday Mersey match with a weight of 10-9-0 of roach, perch, Runner-up Ade Green was second with a weight of 6-4-0. Both anglers fished pole and maggot.

Weights were well down on our Sunday Mersey Series which was won by Neil Buist with 3-10-0 made up of half a dozen skimmers, roach, and perch caught on both feeder and pole methods with maggot at the business end. Ed Frangleton was second with 3-7-0.

22nd August 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd August, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Around local waters Richards Munns reports a session on Grey Mist last week when he caught five quality tench plus a target carp. Jeff Gormley set his stall out for tincas on the same venue with the best brace weighing 6-11-0 and 7-4-0. The Mist according to members is one of the most consistent waters for these species in the North West. Bream and tench are providing reasonable sport at Rixton Claypits with reports of a few carp being caught. I know rumour is so often totally wrong but there is one doing the rounds that a thirty plus has been caught from Moore Quarry and to be honest with our current stocking policy it is a real possibility. Any info/confirmation please?

Small fish dominated our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal which was won again by Jimmy Byrne with 4-11-7. Jimmy fished the pole and maggot for a net of small roach and gudgeon that have made a comeback this season. Lennie Dutton failed to draw an end peg but nevertheless came through in second place with 3-13-9.

Committee member Ade Green enjoyed his second Mersey win in as many weeks when he led the field in our Tuesday Mersey match with 10-11-0 of roach and perch caught on the usual pole and maggot. Ray Boden was the runner-up with 10-2-0.

Ray Boden won the Saturday Mersey match with a weight of 12-12-0 of roach, perch, Runner-up Ade Green was in the money again with a weight of 10-6-0. Both anglers fished pole and maggot.

Our Sunday Mersey Series was won by Ray Boden who seems almost unbeatable on the pole and weighed a mix of roach, perch, small 2oz skimmers, and five small chub. Both the tiny skimmers and chub are good news for the future of the river that has suffered heavily from predation these past number of years. Neil Buist abandoned his legendary 'triangle method' in preference of pole and maggot to take second place with 10-3-0.

Would the member who reported a problem with a farmer at Caerhowel Hall please contact me as I would like more detail. We own this fishery and have access all along the river.

15th August 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th August, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

The Sankey St Helens Canal in the Carterhouse area has suffered fish deaths over the weekend, mainly bream to date, several perch and carp. Both the Environment Agency and Halton Council have been brilliant and it is a complex issue but it has been caused because of the extremely poor water quality as a result of the new Runcorn Bridge works. There has never in all the years I have known the fishery been problems of this magnitude.

Appleton Reservoir has been producing some good catches of roach to feeder tactics and maggot and also carp are putting in regular appearances. Our head bailiff, Jay Makin was in action just over a week ago and after spodding in a generous helping of hemp and corn he fished a pop-up and was rewarded with his first fish a 19lbs mirror that gave a good account of itself. A brace of tench around the 6lbs mark followed and as darkness came rolling in along with thunder and heavy rain for good measure it also brought a further six carp and the final fish of the night a 23lbs dark mirror carp of 23lbs.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was held on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook and was certainly a close-run thing as there was barely a couple of ounces separating second and fourth places. Winner Jimmy Byrne was over 1.5lbs clear with a total weight of 5-14-13 made up of skimmers and roach. Graham Belton was second with 4-5-6.

Our Tuesday Mersey match was won this week by Derek Bibby with 7-8-0 of roach and perch caught on the pole and maggot. Ray Boden was the runner-up with 6-8-0.

Ray Boden won the Saturday Mersey match with a weight of 9-8-0 of roach, perch, and a bonus 1.5lb skimmer bream taken on the pole and maggot. Jimmy Byrne was second with 7-7-0 caught on groundbait feeder and maggot.

Ade Green has been knocking on the door for some time in the Mersey Series and finally has secured a win when he took the top honours in our Second Association Rod only match with a weight of 9-10-0 made up of roach and perch taken on bolo and maggot. Only two ounces separated second placed Alan Birchall who fished the same method for 9-8-0.

There is a working party on Sunday at the Mount starting around 10am so if you fancy helping out just turn up and ask for Derek or Brian….you will be made more than welcome.

8th August 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th August, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

Dylan Coyle may only be 8years of age but thanks to his dad, Daniels passion for angling it was a forgone conclusion that the youngster would be introduced to the sport. The fact is that Dylan took to it like a duck to water and he has enjoyed numerous trips to our fisheries. His most recent trip to Statham Pool saw him catch 17 roach and his first ever eel, the latter is always a memorable experience like no other! He caught all the fish on a margin pole and maggot.  As his dad says, "He is an angler for life."

On Sunday Tony Rough set off for a visit to the River Dane at Holmes Chapel and set his stall out float fishing hoping for a couple of chub. He walked the whole stretch of the river fishing several swims and caught twelve grayling up to 1lb 8oz, as well as his target fish, four chub all between 2lb and 3lb. He lost three better fish that seemed to know exactly where the snags were despite Tony's best efforts. All the fish where caught on worm or sweetcorn.

Tony Williams taking note of comments regarding pike activity on the River Mersey that appeared in last week's column decided to find out for himself with the result that he caught three of the toothy predators early on Sunday morning well before the match started. The biggest was 10lb on the nose and they all fell to Salmo Slider Jerk baits. Truly a healthy fishery that caters for all aspects of our sport. For the record, the match fished later was won with a weight of 17lbs.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was held on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge and to all accounts it excelled itself. Winner Jimmy Byrne included four bream plus a 1lb roach in his catch of 8-12-5 whereas second placed WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks must have really 'had a sweat on' as his net consisted of three hundred small roach and skimmers. The numbers of small fish are really encouraging for the future.

In form match organiser Ray Boden won both our Tuesday and Saturday Mersey matches with 8-1-0 and 8-10-0 respectively, and also included a third place in the Shield Contest for good measure. The runner-up place on Saturday went to Barry Chambers who weighed in at 8-3-0. Both fished the pole and maggot.

On Sunday, our Shield match on the River Mersey was won decisively by Martin Lenihan with a great catch weighing 17lbs exactly. He included bonus bream of 5 and 4lbs in his catch plus roach and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Second placed Dave Brooks fished the pole and maggot for 12-3-0 of roach and skimmers.

Bailiffs and members have recently reported several instances of stupid and irresponsible disposal of line. This is a danger to birds and other wildlife and will not be tolerated. Members must take all line home for safe disposal.

1st August 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st August, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

Mike Pritchard was forced to abandon his favourite peg 5 on the River Mersey as it was virtually unfishable due to a fallen tree that had been washed downstream and had all but blocked it completely. However, a move to peg 3 saved the day when fishing waggler and maggot he was catching small roach, perch, chub, and hybrids virtually from the off. A change to caster though brought a better stamp of roach to around 12ounces and Mike reckoned with these he had a total catch of 18 to 20lbs.

A few new members have enquired regarding the lock situation at Fosters Pools. The situation is that when the farmer has cattle in the field or is expecting a delivery he substitutes our lock for his own and there is no access other than on foot for members. It is simply a matter of protecting members cars as anyone who has ever had the misfortune knows that to be 'licked' by cows usually takes an expensive respray to sort out the damage. There are three parking places outside the gates without obstructing the cottages opposite.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was held at our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery at Wigan where committee member Graham Belton had an impressive win having over 10lbs to spare over the second placed angler. Using pole fished worm/caster cocktail plus 4mm pellet over micro-pellet feed he weighed in his catch of skimmers, roach, and crucians at 27-8-0. Local rod Alan Pendlebury was in second place with 17-14-0 with a similar mix of fish.

Jimmy Byrne won our Saturday Mersey Series match when he put together a winning weight of 14-13-0 made up of 8-8-0 of roach plus a bonus bream of 6-5-0 taken on pole and maggot. Joint second placed Paul Harding and Barry Chambers both fished a groundbait feeder and maggot for 14-12-0. During the last thirty minutes of the match Paul landed two 5lb bream and Barry fish of 3 and 4lb.

On Sunday, the Tom James Open match held on the River Mersey was won by Keith Smith with an all roach catch taken on pole and maggot for 12-2-0. Match organiser Ray Boden fishing the same method was the runner-up with 9-3-0 made up of roach plus a brace of bonus skimmers that boosted his weight. Quite a lot of pike were striking as fish were being landed with fish estimated at around the 10lbs mark.

I would appreciate it if perhaps more members would email me their catch reports which are always of interest to other members when planning their next visit to our waters.
