Grace Rigby at the tender age of ten made an impression on her dad Dave following her first introduction to angling at Statham Pool. She started off with a cracking tench and some small roach taken on the pole and red maggot at 5metres. Changing over to a method feeder Dave was kept busy casting for her but by the end of the session Grace had got the hang of it. She caught carp and bream on both banded pellet and dead red maggots on the hook. Dave and Grace are already planning their next trip…..watch this space I am certain we will hear more of this young lady.
Jay Simmonds last fished Woodshaw Reservoir about six years ago having heard it contained very good crucians and caught a dozen or so fish, but was disappointed that although he had some sizeable fish, none looked like proper crucians. He returned to the venue last week for a short session and float-fished fairly close in where he found the fish in a good feeding mood. Jay ended up with about sixteen 'crucians' plus a few bream, but again reckoned there were a lot of goldfish hybrids up to a couple of pounds or so but the good news was that six were 100% crucian carp.
Eric J Smith was on Grey Mist on Sunday with his grandson Callum and Fishless Fletcher and it would be an understatement to say it wasn't the most productive of days. Eric and Co. spent around seven hours waiting for a bite and when it came Eric hit into what he thought would be a good tench. As Callum rushed to set up his camera Eric cringed as Fishless grabbed the landing net just as the head of a rather large Eel broke surface. Having only ever caught one eel of a decent size in the whole of his angling career this one looked either to be a PB or the second largest he had ever caught. When the line parted after Fishless had made at least half a dozen attempts with the net, commenting, 'that wasn't my fault, it kept swimming out of the net.' I'm afraid he rest of the report was unprintable.
Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick where our Vice President Geoff Brooks was the winner with 4-15-0. He fished pole and pinkie to catch a brace of bonus bream plus some roach and almost doubled the weight of second placed George Barber who fished bread punch for 2-8-12 made up of small roach. Please note there is no match on the 29th May bank holiday.
There is a working party at Appleton Reservoir starting at 10am on Saturday 27th May as it is the intention to reinstate night fishing on a trial basis. It will go ahead if enough turn up to help in a clean-up and peg tidy with hopefully a number of the old pegs brought back into use. Only those volunteers attending the working party will be allowed to fish that night.
Last chance…..Still looking for a member who is a surveyor that is willing to help our club by producing a couple of drawings relating to the access dispute on our stretch of the River Wye. Anybody out there please get in touch.
