Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes 25th April 2017

25th April, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

James Rogers reports plenty of action at Worthington Lakes despite the level being dropped for inspection works. Using a maggot feeder and double red on the hook he caught fourteen bream to 3.5lbs along with some quality roach. Regular carp catches although no records are being broken.

Mike Pritchard who dramatically had his previous week's session cut short on Statham Pool when his wife locked herself out of the house more than made up for it this week. He fished his usual small waggler tactics using maggot and finally caster which brought on better stamp roach to the 10oz mark plus a bonus carp of around 8lbs that gave him a few nail biting moments on his 18's hook to 1.5 hook length. He had about fifty fish and reports a lot of small pike activity so probably worth a visit.

On the 1st May the committee are introducing some changes in an effort to improve peg accessibility for members during the summer months on Sandiway lakes. It means simply that those ending their night session must leave the water by 12noon on their last day and those coming on for the night must not access the fishery before 2pm. The idea is that this gives everyone a chance of a peg and prevents pegs being handed on to mates.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Daresbury on Monday was a close run thing with barely half a pound between the first four places. John Dagnall led the field with 3-10-8 taken on pole and alternating between bread and pinkie. Lenny (End Peg) Dutton was less than an ounce behind in the runner up spot with 3-10-4. Catches were mainly roach and small skimmers with the exception of Stan Charnock who weighed an eel of 1.5lbs. Please note there is no match next week due to the bank holiday.

Please note there is a working party at Grey Mist Mere this weekend and it is closed from 10am Saturday morning and only those who attend the working party can fish Saturday night.

There is also one on Sunday morning at The Mount starting at 9am. There is a regular group of volunteers so if you fancy joining them please ask for Derek Cowell or Brian Jones on site.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries. Please email catch details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

Andrew Beddeson had Wide Hole all to himself on Good Friday where he spent an enjoyable four hours or so hours catching plenty of roach and perch plus three bream around 2.5 to 3lbs as a bonus. All were caught fishing caster over pellet. Although very happy with the sport on this Association owned fishery he was less pleased about the rubbish left by non-members. We are looking for volunteers to help out on this fishery so if any members fancy getting involved please drop me an email.

Regular contributor Eric J Smith took the week before Easter off work and managed to fit in three sessions on Cicely Mill Pool and three on Grey Mist Mere. Apart from one day on the Mist sport was on the slow side. Eric reckons that his favourite water Cicely still hasn't come to life yet but nevertheless he caught three hybrids on his first session, four tench all about 3lbs on the second, and three crucians the next day. On his first visit to Grey Mist Eric sat for nine hours without a bite then had six tench in six casts. The best three weighed 7-8-0, 7-10-0, and 8-1-0, all three beat his previous P.B. which had stood for years at 7-6-0. The next day produced one tench, again over seven pounds at 7-11-0 and Thursday was a blank.

Eric fished a maggot feeder with red maggots on the mist and his usual method feeder with hemp sprayed over the top on Cicely. To sum up his week I would think four tincas each beating his previous longstanding PB was a result.

It really is encouraging to see that more adult members are now taking youngsters for free taster sessions on the four designated fisheries which are Woodshaw Reservoir, Ackers pit, Bridgewater Canal, and Offa's Dyke Fisheries. Any adult member can take any youngster aged 12 years and under on a one to one basis on these fisheries for free.

Please note there is a working party at Sandiway Lakes this weekend and Big Sandiway only is closed from Saturday at 10am until about 4pm on Sunday. Only volunteers who put themselves down for the working party can fish on Saturday night.

11th April, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Plenty of action at Rixton Claypits where decent catches of tench and bream on both float and feeder methods and been enjoyed by members. Dave Joyce fished on the pole at 11metres feeding caster and hemp with double red maggot on the hook and ended his session with eight tench and three bream.

Ian Parker enjoyed a good session at High Legh Fishery over the weekend where a small method feeder and pellet saw him catch carp to 11-8-0. Not large by the standards of some fisheries but the fact he landed eighteen kept him busy throughout.

The warmer weather saw a marked upturn in sport at Woodshaw Reservoir with good catches of crucians and carp, taken mainly on pole tactics using soft pellet. Maggot or pinkie is a roach every cast. This well maintained fishery is a credit to the team of local volunteers and hardly a week goes by that a visiting member echoes those same sentiments.

On Mowpin fishing is good at present producing good mixed catches. Close by the Carp  Pool although not living up to his name is giving good sport with roach, rudd, and crucians. D & C (Fosters Pools) are producing roach plus the occasional carp. There is currently a parking problem on Higher Lane that the team are trying to resolve.

Lennie (end peg) Dutton was the clear winner of our Disabled & Over 60's match fished at Keckwick with 3-5-12 taken on pole and bread punch. Jimmy Byrne was the runner-up with 2-6-6. The best weights came from Keckwick Bridge towards Preston Brook and most nets were made up of small roach.. Please note there is no match on Easter Monday.

4th April 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th April, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Northern Angling Show last weekend just gets better year on year and it was a pleasure being there with our 'show team' chatting to current and welcoming new members to Warrington Anglers Association. The craic was great and none stop throughout the two hectic and tiring days but nevertheless everyone is already planning for next year's event. Without exception, we all ended up buying some tackle although I am not at liberty to mention individual purchases on the off chance that their wives may rear this column!

I visited Grey Mist on Tuesday afternoon and watched with envy as Chris Neden landed three superbly conditioned tench including one of 7-1-0. He was feeder fishing using red maggot and ended his session with ten fish.

A couple of pegs away Rob Robinson caught two fish over 7lbs and as I watched lost a third fish at the net. On my way from the Mist I ended up chatting for a few minutes to Jamie Light when I dropped in conversation that Chris had caught ten tench from the Boathouse peg and was packing up as I left. The result was that the peg produced another eight tincas for Jamie including a new PB of 7-12-0 taken on the same tactics.

Eric J Smith managed to get four hours on his favourite Cicely Mill Pool on Sunday afternoon in company with his grandson Callum. Eric landed three crucians all over 2lbs and Callum only one fish but a new PB of 2-1-0. Method was method feeder tactics, a wafter hook bait, and hemp seed over the top.

There are no prizes for guessing the bait this week's winner of our Disabled & Over 60's match was using as it is rumoured he is a part owner of a large national bakery. George Barber fished pole and punch bread for a weight of 2-9-0 of small roach followed in second place by Bud Lea with 2lbs dead.
