25th October 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th October, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tony Rough managed to fit in a two hour session on the Alyn in Hope on Sunday morning. The river level was very low so he decided to fish one of the bends that a local ex-angler informed him was once known as eel corner. Fishing a small crystal waggler and feeding just five or six maggots at a time he caught half a dozen small grayling, and around a dozen small brown trout. On his own admission not a huge catch but nevertheless great fun on light tackle and his old faithful canal rod in pleasant surroundings. Enjoyment of our sport is not solely about catching big nets of fish although it does help.

Committee member Ade Green and yours truly were out and about again on WAA business at our stretch of the river Wye on Monday where we are trying to sort out the access problems. It is a long drive and it would have been a waste if we had not packed our rods in the off-chance that we may have time to wet a line. Well, as you may have guessed the opportunity arose and in my usual gentlemanly manner I gave Ade the first choice of swims whereupon he predictably picked the boss barbel/chub peg. We both set up feeder tackle and it was a race for the first fish, again it was down to me, a lovely brownie of around a pound which was followed by eight others, a few grayling, and a solitary dace. All on maggot but not a sign on pellet or caster. As for Ade he only had the one fish, a chub of around 4lbs taken on halibut pellet, but to be fair he did miss a good bite when I was borrowing some tape from him for my feeder.

Danny Sixsmith put in a rare appearance on our Mersey Saturday Series match and ended up a clear winner with 10-9-0 of roach and hybrids to 12oz taken on pole and maggot tactics. Derek Bibby was in runner-up spot with 7-11-0 of roach and small chub. It is nice to see the chub appearing in catches as enough were stocked in the river both by WAA and the Environment Agency but for some reason they don't appear to reach any size much above the pound mark despite the abundance of natural food in the river. The Victoria Park stretch was the venue for our Sunday Series match which saw Derek Bibby move up a place to share the win jointly with match organiser Ray Boden both on 8-7-0 taken on pole and maggot.

The Disabled & Over 60's match weights on the Trent & Mersey Canal were down from the previous week's results but were still very respectable taking into account the changing weather conditions. Jimmy Byrne was the winner with 5-13-0. Derek Bibby who is never too far from the money collected another second place with 4-4-8 making a total of two seconds and a win over the three day period.

18th October 2016 Warrington Anglers Guardian Column

18th October, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Ian Parr tried High Legh Fishery for the first time this past weekend but when he arrived at the venue and set up his tackle the horrible truth dawned on him, yes his bait was in the fridge at home. Don't worry Ian if anglers are truthful many have been in a similar position at some time or other. On this occasion it was Ian's butties that got him out of the hole even managing to salvage the meat filling and a bag of crisps for lunch. Sparingly feeding small balls of sloppy bread near the weed and crust on the hook he hooked and lost a carp after ten minutes. It was another hour before he landed his first carp and ended up with seven others to around 8lbs before the six rounds of thick sliced ran out.

Our Mersey Saturday Series match had a new winner this week when Derek Bibby fishing with a groundbait feeder and maggot put together a net of roach and perch weighing 10-14-0. Martin Lenihan took second place with a similar catch of exactly 10lbs.

The following day it was pole tactics as opposed to groundbait feeder that produced the winning catch of 8-15-0 of mainly roach and perch. Loose-feeding maggot Jimmy Byrnes had a 4lbs buffer over runner-up Jim Gannon who weighed 4-15-0 caught using his favorite feeder method and alternating between maggot and bread punch.

The Mersey is definitely improving but the large bream have all but disappeared or to coin a euphemism more than likely ended up as Tarka tucker as they are large slow moving targets for any stray otters that come over the weir at particularly high tides. However on a more positive note regular column contributor Mark Pritchard enjoyed a busy session in a swim adjacent to Victoria Park on Saturday when fishing a waggler and alternating between maggot and caster he had over fifty fish, mainly roach and perch plus the odd dace. Caster accounted for the better stamp of fish.

What a different a change of venue can make as catches were well up on Mondays Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Northwich. Derek Bibby added another win to his Saturday Mersey success when he produced a winning weight of 8-4-12 of small roach and perch taken on pole tactics and ringing the changes between maggot and caster. Ron Durr was second with 7-1-4.

11th October 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th October, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Sandiway small lake is producing some cracking carp catches,  I am led to believe that four thirtys came out in the past week or so plus some stunning upper doubles. As usual I cannot name names but the back-up corroboration is in the number of bookings as they are not there for 'the camping'. Still it is really great to know that our stocking policy is producing the goods for the benefit of all members because the high protein baits our members are using also suit other species particularly the tench and bream. It would be interesting if a member really targetted the quality roach that this water holds.  On Saturday a charity horseride is taking place that will pass from Whitgate Way along the track that connects to the centre one and then along this between our two lakes. It will not effect anglers in any way.
A couple of issues have been brought to my attention this past week both in breach of our rules. The first is that under no circumstances must carp or other species over 2.5lbs be retained by any means without the express permision of the committee or in authorised matches. Members are permitted to photgraph specimen fish at the time of capture after which they must be released immediately. The second issue may not seem as important but those who bring non-members onto our private locked fisheries are putting our club at risk in this current claim society that has evolved. Strictly members only means just that.
I spent a day at our Loton Park Fishery on the River Severn last week accompanied by fellow committee member Ade Green at a meeting over access issues with the Agent. It is a fact that when we first took on these rights the land was used just for grazing and driving to the river by vehicle was a piece of cake in dry conditions. Farming usage has changed over time and now without a 4x4 or one with good ground clearance it is virtually impossible. The agent has agreed to look at car parking arrangements, taking out ruts, stone gateways, and open up those that restrict free passage along the river.
This excercise didn't take all day and we just happened to have rods and bait in the car and it would have been a sin to leave without checking out the river. I gave gave Ade the choice of swim and chose one upstream. It was head down to catch the first fish, ....and yes it was yours truly ensuring Ade knew about it; after that it was one a chuck running a chubber through with double maggot a metre or so from the bank. All went well until suddenly Ade appeared at my side (having so far in the session blanked)as I was unhooking a plump roach. Casting in again and several runs down the swim produced nothing until it hit me like a brick, Ade had clomped along the waters edge and scattered the fish, I was ever so grateful and told him so in no uncertain terms. He then broke his duck and started catching a a mixture of small chub, dace, and roach, the latter were really good stamp fish. And to interest the game anglers a salmon of well into double figures jumped in my swim. We will be back.
Our Mersey Saturday Series saw Ray Boden put together a nice net of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot to take a well deserved win with 12-2-0. Ray had almost 5lbs to spare over runner-up Alan Birchall who weighed in 7-7-0 after a dodgy start when he fell in and was warned for swimming.
Boden again showed his mastery of pole tactics on the river when he took another win on our Sunday Mersey Series with even a few ounces increase on his previous days catch that again left him well clear of the rest of the field. With a weight of 12-5-0 he was exactly 5lbs ahead of second placed King of the River (Ant Higham) who weighed 7-5-0 of roach and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.
Weights were well down on our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday fished on the Bridgewater at Preston Brook. It saw John Dagnall put together his first win of the series this year with 1-10-5 followed by George Hollis with 1-7-2. Next week please note a change of venue to the Trent & Mersey at School Lane.
