20th September 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th September, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Ian Rose reported a good session on the Dee at Shocklach on Thursday when he took a couple of day's holiday and decided to try the stretch for the first time. Travelling light with only the minimum of tackle, a rod, landing net, and backpack he was soon tackled up and fishing. He fed maggot and was catching dace steadily on a stick-float and centre-pin. A change to caster in the hope of catching better stamp fish was slow but it paid off and his first bite was a chub of about 2lbs followed by five more, the biggest around 4lbs along with three grayling. Ian had the stretch to himself and will be making a return trip.

I had a trip up to Worthington Lakes on Tuesday for a meeting and despite the weather being perfect only met two anglers who had taken advantage of the day to both enjoy a session catching quality roach around 12 ounces, perch to 1.5lbs, and hybrids. I realise that there is a healthy walk to pegs but it is smooth going for fishing trolleys. I definitely wished I had brought my tackle.

Ray Boden was pushed into the runner-up spot in our Mersey Saturday Series when Alan Birchall fishing pole and maggot weighed in 10-6-0 of roach and perch to take the winner's purse. Rumour has it that Alan was claiming he wasn't catching and when the tidal bore topped the weir and rose two feet forcing him onto higher ground he wasn't a happy bunny but kept his cool. Ray weighed in 9-15-0 fishing the same tactics. The craic amongst the regulars is part of the attraction of on these matches.

Alan Birchall maintained his winning form the following day and enjoyed yet another Mersey win with a change in tactics to stick-float and maggot for a mixed net of roach, chub, perch, and dace weighing 6-12-0. That man Ray Boden was again pushed into second place with 5-11-0 taken on bolognaise and pole methods.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was back on the Bridgewater at Preston Brook where the later pegs proved the better bet. Trevor Bainbridge drew amongst the fish and made the most of it putting together a mixed net that included two bonus bream to take his first win of the 2016 series with 7-4-0. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 7-1-0.
