Match organiser Jimmy Byrne took first place in our regular Monday Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Acton Grange Bridge. With fish everywhere in spawning mode and tightly shoaled at various breeding hotspots it really was a struggle to tempt even the smaller immature ones to feed. Jimmy needed only 1-12-8 to take the main money. Runner-up was no surprise as the man is currently on fire, Dickie Wernham with 1-4-0. I have no doubt that there will be a few more low weight matches until the fish are cleaned off and looking for food.

After a slow start due to the recent Bank Holiday our members only Woodshaw Junior Summer League commences in earnest  on Monday 6th June 2016 and consists of a weekly eight match series fished on a points basis with an extra ninth match as a 'Fun BBQ match' and prize presentation. The series will also incorporate six separate cup matches as listed in you membership card on page 15. So you have a match within a match, therefore as well as fishing for overall points competitors will also be fishing an individual cup match with the first three anglers on weight receiving engraved trophies. All youngster who fish the series will qualify for a prize so what have you got to lose ….it's all to fish for.

Paul Barraclough ventured onto Statham Pool last Wednesday for a quick afternoon session. He enjoyed good sport with loads of roach, two Eels, a brace of small carp, a nice tench of 4-12-0, and for good measure ended his afternoon with a small pike taken on red pellet. Result, an enjoyable busy session and home in time for tea.

Following last weekend's debacle at Sandiway Lakes members are reminded that it is a condition of membership (rule 8) that all anglers must be in possession of a current Environment Agency license. There is no excuse.

Also members seem to forget that every card holder is authorised (see rear cover of license) to challenge any person fishing in any water rented or owned by the Association, or committing any act not in accordance with the rules. The bottom line is it is your club, do not simply leave it to the bailiffs if you see anything untoward, they after all cannot be everywhere at once and are volunteers who care for the wellbeing of our club.

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.

24th May, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

He was out of the frame last week but in our regular Monday Disabled & Over 60's match Dickies back!  Fishing on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Davenham this week saw Dickie Wernham take his second win of the year with a pole caught skimmer and roach catch taken on caster for 4-12-6. Runner up was new boy on the block Roy Rogers (we've done all the jokes) with a similar catch mix for 3-0-4. These matches are friendly and the mickey taking never stops but they are brilliant. PLEASE NOTE due to the bank holiday the match has been re-scheduled for Tuesday.

Sandiway Large (53 acre) lake has had a lot of attention of late due to rumours of a big forty coming out, however while it would show our diligent annual stocking policy is working I have yet to see proof (even if correct probably never will). For those after the bream it has been a non-event as they have been spawning but a few tench around 7 or 8lbs have been reported taken on maggot. Simon Elliott fishing boilie over pellet in the margin has had a few mid-double carp from the small (17-5acre) lake. Just a pointer to members booking on the lakes the mobile signal is rubbish so if you are leaving messages there is a chance that we won't get them or if we do they will sound like gibberish and you may not be as a result booked on. Far better to book before you arrive when you have a good signal.

Phil Hancock with his mate Phil Stokes decided on a change of venue this week and as is their norm at this time of the year were ready to fish at Grey Mist Mere by 5am. Both fished a maggot feeder set-up using maggot or worm on the hook. Phil H landed seven tench ranging from exactly 6lbs to just over 7lbs and Phil S four fish all just over 6lbs. They were in the car on their way home at 11am very happy.

Members have been complaining about the horrible pollution entering Rixton Claypits from the adjacent ditch. It has been reported both by myself and I understand another member and laboratory results from samples are currently being analysed locally. As soon as the Environment Agency come back to me I will let you know the result as it is no use speculating at this time. However this is a re-occurring problem and needs sorting.

Our regular Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Road this week and saw Jimmy Byrne take another win with 5-8-0 of perch, skimmers, and roach. Nothing like keeping it in the family, following Dickie Wernam's win last week it was his brothers turn to frame as Keith put a nice net of caster caught roach on the scales for 4-12-0 to take second place.

Phil Hancock visited Rixton Claypits last weekend for an early morning session that started at 5am when he set up with a method feeder rig using sweetcorn. He fished until 11am during which time he caught fifteen bream ranging from 2 to 4.5lbs and six tench from 3 to 5lbs. A cheap session bait-wise and a definite red letter day.

Another early bird, Tony Rough had a short three and a half hour session on the Mount at Buckley on Saturday morning. He started fishing at 5-30am using an inline maggot feeder and triple maggot on the hook. After a couple of casts it was a bite a chuck from quality roach and perch, plus three tench to 3lb. Tony was still catching when he had to tear himself  away at 9am to drive his daughter to work. I would have probably suggested a bus!

Paul Floyd decided on a change of tactics during his overnight session at Grey Mist last Friday when in place of the accepted boilies he opted for popped-up mixers aka dog biscuits. By 6-30am the sun was up and time to head for home but during his session he had caught carp of 12-14-0, 14-5-0, 15-3-0, 16-6-0, topped by one of 17lbs exactly and added three tench to 5-9-0.

Grey Mist is still producing quality tench albeit I snatched two hours on Tuesday evening but blanked, still it was peaceful sitting there watching the member opposite land three olive green red eyed beauties. I definitely need to get out more.

Dickie Wernham enjoyed his first win of 2016 when he fished our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road. What made it even more special was that he was on the next peg to match ace Jimmy Byrne who weighed 4-12-8 for the runner-up spot against Dickie's 6-9-4 which was made up of roach and small skimmers taken on the pole, alternating between bread punch and caster.

Fish are starting spawning on a number of our fisheries at this present time, so just a reminder that members must not fish any pegs where this is happening nor should they cast to such areas. This is a fish welfare issue and the committee will come down hard on such unsporting behaviour. Simply let the fish spawn in peace without being disturbed.

New member Stephen Oakes decided to try Grey Mist Mere on Wednesday as his introduction to Warrington Anglers fisheries. Fishing a PVA bag crammed with carpy goodies he only managed one fish but was well pleased when he landed a superb conditioned common of exactly 25lbs. Members have been enjoying some cracking tench catches this past week especially with the lighter evenings. The Mist tench switched on around 8pm for Andy Humphries and he enjoyed a magic ninety minutes landing four tench around 5lbs apiece plus a decent sized eel. All fell for feeder fished red maggot and worm cocktail offerings. Our volunteers introduced the Dyofix weed control dye to the fishery on Tuesday evening so let's hope it does the trick. The dye is not harmful to humans, invertebrates, or fish as it simply reduces photosynthesis and aquatic weed growth.

On Sunday the unholy Trinity of Eric Smith, his grandson Callum, and Fishless Fletcher decided on a change of venue to Cicily Mill Pool. Eric enjoyed the most productive session catching a brace of 4lbs bream and seven crucians with five of them over 2lbs topped by  a specimen of 3-1-0, all as a matter of fact topping his previous PB. Callum caught four crucians ranging from 1-6-0 to a new PB of exactly 2lbs plus a bream around the 4lbs mark. Fishless belied his nickname and had three nice crucians to 2lbs plus a tench of around 3lbs. He shared a peg with Eric, both using method feeders and following a visit to see how his grandson was faring he returned to ask his mate where he was casting. The reply was priceless, "I'm aiming at that horse over there but it's moved, it wasn't a good idea was it." Phew, Eric was speechless, but it explained a few things!!!

Please note that there will be a Memorial Match held for Dave Berry at Meadow View Fisheries on 30th May fish 11am to 4pm. All welcome, please ring the fishery on 01925 757985 for details.

3rd May, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Disabled & Over 60's regulars were given a day off on bank holiday Monday but the match fished at Preston Brook the previous week saw George Barber make it three in a row as he topped the weights for the third consecutive week with a net of silver fish for 4-6-4 taken on pole and punched bread tactics. Runner-up was match organiser Jimmy Byrne with 3-13-0.  It was nice to see Alf Seddon out and about again and especially as he made the frame and collected some winnings. Please note the change of venue to the Trent & Mersey Canal for Monday's match.

Eric Smith enjoyed a tench session on Grey Mist last week accompanied by his mate 'Fishless Fletcher' and ended up with six tench to 6-6-0 and a 3lbs pike that took a fancy to three red maggots as he was reeling in. As for 'Fishless' he also caught a tench that sent the scales round to just over 4lbs and has now doubled his amount of fish caught since he landed his PB crucian from Cicily Mill last September!

Eric was back on the Mist on Thursday and enjoyed his best tench fishing ever when over four visits he landed ten over 6lbs and three over 7lbs including a PB of 7-6-0 but lost a much bigger fish at the net when it slipped the hook.  He was joined by his grandson Callum on Sunday who also managed a brace of fish of 6lbs and 6-10-0.

Worthington is still on my 'to visit' list as it is still producing some great bream sport to groundbait feeder tactics. Often overlooked as a carp fishery despite few decent sized fish reported this week.

Please note that all anglers visiting Appleton Reservoir must park in our locked car park and not at the roadside. Bailiffs have been instructed to report offenders and the Police have been alerted who will prosecute for breaches of parking regulations. As a club we enjoy an excellent relationship with local residents and are determined that it will not be spoiled by a few inconsiderate individuals.
