27th October 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th October, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Member, Jim Poulter dusted off his pike gear for the first of his winter sessions. He visited the Bridgewater Canal around Lymm and banked two and lost two fish. Nothing large but nevertheless a good start and it definitely beats a blank. He fished smelt using sink and draw tactics.

Last week Derek Bibby stole the show by winning on the Mersey on three consecutive days but it proves that even the best need half a decent peg to have a chance of success as the best he could manage this week was a third place. However it was good news for other anglers, particularly Jimmy Byrnes who easily walked away with our Saturday event with a cracking net of twenty skimmer bream for 17-10-0 caught on maggot and groundbait feeder tactics. Match organiser Ray Boden claimed second place with an all roach catch of 8-15-0 taken on pole and maggot.

I mentioned in my last week's column that the larger bream on the river usually go off the feed and it was good news to see decent weights from silver fish however I didn't count on Neil Buist (aka 'The Engine') for following his holiday to exotic places for he steamed to victory in our regular Mersey Sunday Series with a stunning weight of 37-10-0 made up of just seven bream, the best a nice specimen of 8lbs. Again groundbait feeder and maggot did the damage. Bob Clough could only manage four bream and a few small roach but his 16-4-0 was good enough to take the runner-up spot albeit normally it may have taken the winner's purse. Third placed Paul Hitchen must be mentioned because he caught his 15-14-0 on feeder and punched bread.

A return from the Mersey to the Bridgewater Canal at Stage Lane this week for our Disabled & Over 60's match saw Lenny Dutton take first place in a close run thing with Jimmy Byrne. At the weigh-in Lenny kept ahead with a narrow margin of 2ozs when he put his catch on the scales for 7-6-4 against Jimmy's 7-4-4. Both caught bream and pristine roach on pole and punch. All other backing weights were roach.

20th October 2015 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

20th October, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

A big thank you this week to two members John Wedgewood and his mate Lee Southerberry who both took a day off work to clear up bags of weed aka skunk or cannabis plant which had been dumped into Appleton Reservoir following the 'harvesting' of a crop. Now I am not preaching either in support of this illegal activity nor against it but quite simply to say if they are dumping their crap on our waters it makes it our business and whatever it takes it must be stopped. If any members see this or anything being dumped on our fisheries please note down any vehicle numbers and ring the police immediately.

Chris Venes and his brother Tim sampled a couple of sessions on the Dee at Worthenbury last week with mixed results. Chris spent the days salmon fishing before the end of season and wasn't surprised in the least when he blanked whilst Tim chose to trot down with maggots to catch a few grayling, trout, and dace on the first day and a similar catch the next but with the addition of a chub around the 4lbs mark.

Our Saturday Mersey match this past week saw Derek Bibby catch a decent weight of roach taken on pole and maggot tactics for exactly 9lbs. He was well clear of second placed Alan Birchall with a net of roach and perch for 5-10-0. One thing for certain with all the roach, perch, and increasing numbers of chub featuring in catches it bodes well for winter fishing as the bream go off the feed during the colder months.

Derek Bibby was on a roll last weekend when following his win on the river the previous day he again took the money in our Sunday Mersey Match with a weight of 8-14-0 followed by match organiser Ray Boden in second place with 6-7-0. Again weights were quite good for the time of the year and what is really good is that any method can take the money.

Some anglers really have cracked it on the Mersey and regularly feature in match results but veteran angler and really nice guy Derek Bibby has really set the bar higher with his third win on this river in as many days when he took the main prize money in our Disabled & Over 60's match held on this venue on Monday. Yes, weights were down slightly but with 6-0-6 of small roach it gave him the treble. Weights were quite close and Keith Dentith (spelling correct this week) wasn't too far behind with 5-14-0 to take the runner-up spot.

13th October 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th November, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Whilst our Facebook internet site is a superb and useful medium for sharing catch and best places to fish information for which it was specifically designed it seems that on occasion members choose to ignore the joining rules to become keyboard warriors and snipe at the club rather than address a direct question to issues via the proper channels. I am talking about the negativity regarding the weed explosion on Grey Mist Mere. Our volunteers have put in hours of back breaking work and eased the problem but we all know that this is only a respite and not a long term remedy. We have looked at the few available methods, and met with the Environment Agency where we have agreed to try the Dyofix product that colours the water to inhibit weed growth. On advice the program will commence around March time but for the time being if you want a day off from the gym watch out for the next weed removal working party.

Ray Boden took the winner's purse for the second week in succession in our Saturday Mersey match with a slightly lower weight than the week before but nevertheless a nice net of fish taken on pole and maggot tactics. His 10-12-0 catch was made up of a 10oz skimmer plus some quality roach and perch. Barry Chambers in second place fished the tip to include a 2lb skimmer in his net of fish for a weight of 8-10-0.

The King of the River (aka Ant Higham) is back and in form fishing his favourite tip method to nail it this week in our Sunday Mersey match with three bream to 5-8-0 plus a few perch all on maggot. There was a joint second with match organiser Ray Boden in the money again but sharing the 2nd and 3rd monies with Paul Hitchen. Fishing two contrasting methods, Ray on the pole taking roach to 1lb whereas Paul fished the tip for his all roach catch. The Mersey is truly an any method venue.

Another win in successive weeks for Keith Daintith in our Disabled & Over 60's match held on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Rudheath. Keith's catch was made up of just four perch, the best an amazing 4lbs and the others all over 1lb. Alan Brown was second with a net of roach and gudgeon for 4-1-2. Nineteen fished.

Any member who wonders what is involved in a working party should turn up to our Offa's Dyke Fisheries at 9am on Sunday and report to organiser Derek Cowell who will definitely make you welcome. This week they are putting the finishing touches to quite a large project to protect our fish stocks from otters who find easier pickings on our venue rather than their adjacent river home.

The Grayling Society is carrying out an end of season count of the species caught on the River Dane during the year. If you wish to help please email me your catch numbers and any comments and I will forward them to their area secretary.

Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th September, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Andy Humphreys took up the challenge but paid heed to my advice on the rough lane to fish the Dee at Worthenbury last week. After a slow start which produced a couple of grayling and a brown trout he moved a couple of hundred yards to the peg on the first gravel 'beach'. The change saw him with pretty much a bite every trot down and ended his session with up nine trout, four grayling to a little over a pound, plus twenty five to thirty dace and chublets. The successful method was trotted maggots over hemp.

Further downstream a gate has now been fitted to Shocklach Hall Lane which leads to our Association owned stretch downstream from the confluence with Worthenbury Brook. Access is still through Dog Kennel Form but there is a combination lock on the gate and I understand there will be a number to ring for the combination. Our bailiff visited today and the gate was open but I have suggested that one of WAA locks be fitted for ease of access.

Match organiser Ray Boden led the field in our Saturday Mersey match with a cracking catch of small fish taken on pole and maggot tactics. His 11-7-0 catch was made up of roach and perch and not a skimmer in sight. Following weights dropped somewhat with a mystery angler evidently on his first visit and maybe publicity shy took second place with 4-9-0 made up of a skimmer and small fish caught on both the tip and pole methods.

Our Sunday Mersey match winner was Jimmy Byrne with an all roach catch of 8-5-0 taken in 16ft of water on pole and loose-fed maggot fished 6ft off the bottom. The following three weights were really close but it was nearly a double win for second placed Ray Boden who was close of Jimmy's heels with 7-15-0 of roach, perch, and chub fishing the same method.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match this week saw Keith Daintith who fished both caster and bread on the pole put 4-14-8 of skimmers and roach on the scales for a comfortable win.  Derek Bibby was runner-up with 3-13-6.
