23rd September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Alan Davenport had a successful trip to our stretch of the Severn at Montford Bridge where after some judicious pruning to access his peg (our rivers do not have manicured banks they remain wild places as nature intended) he fished halibut pellets and a feeder packed with groundbait and feed pellets to take chub to 2lbs but no barbel which can run to a decent size in this area. A brief change to maggots on both the feeder and float saw him plagued with small dace and a tiny chub which is good news for the rivers future.

Existing member Lee Latham enrolled his young son Jay last week and wasted no time in introducing him to The Mount at Buckley where despite losing the first few fish they managed to land a carp of around 8lbs and countless perch that kept the youngster busy fishing his pole. They also had a quick session on the Alyn where they caught a 2lbs wild brownie and a grayling well over 2lbs both taken on light fly tackle. David Robinson also visited the same venue over the weekend but opted for a different approach using a small stick-float and maggot he landed quite a few grayling to 1.5lbs, dace and a few small trout.

Tony Rough just cannot get enough of our river fishing but after a number of successful trips to Shocklach he decided to brave the rough track and try further upstream at Worthenbury for a change of scene. He fished a centre pin reel and trotted down maggot under an Avon float and his regular loose-feeding with hemp and maggot soon brought a steady stream of small chub and dace along with trout and grayling to 1lb in fact it was a bite a chuck. Alan Sky also made it down the track to be rewarded with grayling to 2lbs and plenty of action with small chub but reckoned the quality sport was well worth the trip to the jet-wash on the way home!

Our Mersey match on Saturday saw St Helens match ace Danny Sixsmith clock up a win with 8-8-0 of roach and skimmers. Match organiser Ray Bowden who has had more second places this year than anyone I know was true to form and not too far behind the winner with 8-2-0 of roach, perch, and a bonus pound chub.

Reduced flow conditions saw the Mersey weights much lower for our Sunday Series event but Martin Lenihan fresh from a third place the previous day took the winner's purse with 5-9-8  of roach, perch, and great to see tiny chublets on pole and maggot. Unsurprisingly Ray Bowden claimed the runner-up spot with 5-4-12. It was nice to see match co-organiser Ant Higham finding his form again and sneaking in at third place when he had a rare go at fishing on the pole.

There have been occasions of late when members have either not booked on for their night session or tried to sneak an extra night. These people are taking up places that members who play by the rules may wish to fish so be warned if caught you may lose your night fishing privilege or even your membership.

Committee member Graham Belton won our our Disabled & over 60's match this week with 5-9-8 and over 2lbs clear of second placed Jimmy Byrne on 3-2-8. It was certainly nice to see veteran angler Alf Seddon back in the frame following a long absence due to illness.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 15th September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

15th September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our intrepid angler Alan Davenport is back from a long stint offshore in the Scottish oilfields to continue with his quest to fish all of our fisheries. He managed a couple of hours at the Mount and caught perch, roach and a small tench. All caught on half worms with caster and red maggot as feed. He commented, "I will say that it is a lovely looking water and once my quest is eventually finished I will be putting a bit of time in there I think."

The Senior Jack Bellis Memorial Match was fished on the River Mersey on Saturday and saw match ace and England Ladies Team Manager Dave Brookes fishing on peg 66 take the top prize money. It was close as Derek Bibby put a catch of 9-6-0 in the scales for second place. The Junior event fished on the Bridgewater Canal where Jack had learned his angling skills as a youngster saw a joint win by Morgan Adawee and David Smith both with 2-4-6.

The River Mersey was not on its best form the following day and conditions gave pole anglers the edge with the large bream not feeding. For some time Ray Bowden has always been the bridesmaid well this week was his as he put 9-8-0 of pole caught roach and perch on the scales from peg 66 which had produced the winner of the Jack Bellis Memorial the previous day. He more than doubled the weight of the runner-up Martin Lenihan who weighed 4-8-8 taken on both pole and the tip from peg 73 but the rest of the weights were poor a fact borne out by our two match organisers who both found bites scarce.

Match organiser of our Disabled & over 60's match this week really drew a dolly peg as he secured a rare win in the popular series over doubling the weight of the next angler. John fished the pole at 12 metres using both red and Cheshire Angling special bronze maggots for a cracking net of small silver fish for 5-6-0. Closest was Derek Bibby with 2-4-0.

9th September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Dave Webb took his partner Kassie Lapatrie for an overnighter at our Moore Quarry fishery on Saturday where at just thirty minutes after the bewitching hour the action started when Kassie hooked into a decent fish. The result was a new PB and her first common carp weighing 21lbs.

Tony Rough fished on the River Dee at Shocklach on Sunday using an Avon float and trotting down with maggot on the hook and loose-feeding maggot and hemp. He caught around 15 grayling, 7 sea-trout, and enough small chub and dace to make any angler very happy. Tony commented, "It is an outstanding stretch of river which is a joy to fish."

Eric Smith took his grandson Callum Postill, (age 12), to Cicely Mill Pool for a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon, telling him with fingers crossed that he would catch a PB crucian, his current best was a 1lb fish. After an hour or so of catching small roach and skimmers the prophecy came true in the form of a crucian of 1lb 9oz which put a big smile Callum's face. Next Sunday's target fish are pike.

Jeff Shaw took the top prize money in our Saturday Mersey Series this week with 10-14-8 of roach, perch, and skimmers taken on both pole and tip. Match organiser Ray Bowden fished the pole at 11metres throughout to make it a close run thing with 10-7-0. With only five minutes to go Jim Gannon hooked into a decent fish and the resulting 6lbs bream landed as the 'all out' was called rocketed him into third place with 9-8-0.

Bob Clough's luck finally ran out this week with a big DNW (did not weigh) as our co-match organiser Paul Harding took the winners spot with 14-0-3 making it his first Sunday win of the series this year. Paul drew unlucky for some peg thirteen and had a mixed net of bream, skimmers, and roach on groundbait feeder and maggot. Ray Bowden was more than happy to mirror his Saturday success as runner up from peg 16 with 10-11-3 of roach and perch taken on his favoured pole and maggot method.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickering Bridge and saw predictably much lower weights on this once prolific length. Jimmy Byrne took the honours with 2-8-4 of small silver fish. M Daniels was second with 2-5-14. But many anglers struggled for bites.

Members are reminded that they must be able to produce their paid up membership cards whenever they visit any of our private enclosed fisheries whether fishing or not. This is their only proof that they are entitled to be there. Giving bailiffs' grief will not be tolerated as they are volunteers helping their club and looking after fellow member's interests.

2nd September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd September 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Ralph Bennett fished a morning session on the Sankey St Helens Canal at Charterhouse and enjoyed cracking sport catching over 50 Rudd, 25 roach, and 6 perch. The roach included one of almost a 1lb plus a few others around 6 ounces. He fished the waggler and loose-fed maggots between 1 and 2 rod lengths out. Ralph was impressed by the quality of the fish and even the rudd were around 3 to 4 ounces with a few bigger ones, all in great condition. The canal with its reed lined swims looks the business so I am not surprised that a return visit is definitely on the cards.

On Saturday I was chatting to one of our new bailiffs at Grey Mist Mere and watched a couple of anglers land a few tench on the far side. It turned out to be Stu Gibson who I hadn't seen for twenty years or so fishing with his mate who landed another fish as we were discussing the merits of pole tactics to target the tench. I had tried a quick pole session the week before but after getting a fish out of the weed it partially straightened and slipped the hook. So Sunday afternoon not to be beaten and armed with beefed up pole gear ready for the olive beauties I baited up the same car park swim. Three maggots on a size 14's Guru spade end carp hook brought a procession of perch so a change to a 16mm Sticky Krill boilie whittled down to pellet size brought my first decent fish. It was followed by two more and a couple slipped the hook. But with three carp visiting my unhooking mat, one a decent double still no tench!

Neil Heaton's report of his 28lb 4oz mirror carp from Moore Quarry just missed my last week's deadline to this column but what a superb fish and a new PB for the captor. He also had a 20lb 8oz common. The fish fell to Jamax Baits that Neil and his mates have been testing in different flavours.

Bob Cole reports catching a 9lbs plus barbel on Wednesday from our stretch of the River Severn at Bicton on pellet.  A fortnight earlier he landed a chub of 4-8-0 from the Dee at Shocklach trotting down using maggot. Our bailiff reports that there are poachers operating on the Dee in the Worthenbury area so I would ask members to keep their eyes peeled for anything suspicious. Report incidents immediately on the Environment Agency FREE PHONE NUMBER 0800 807060.

The runaway winner of our Saturday Mersey Series this week was Paul Harding who showed off his unquestionable feeder skills with 21lbs of bream and skimmers which included one of 6-13-0. Veteran match ace Jimmy Byrne was in the money again in runner-up spot with 10-15-0. Special mention should be made of Barry Chambers all roach catch taken on the pole at 6metre on caster.

Bob Clough made it a hat trick of wins at Sunday's Mersey match with 12-0-0 and for good measure it was also his third end peg draw in as many weeks. The river was pushing through but Bob ignored the slack water in front of him and cast a heavy groundbait feeder towards the far bank into the main flow. He landed a bonus 6lbs bream backed up with skimmers and roach all taken on red maggot. Rumour has it that he has picked up so much coin lately that he's opened two cash Isa's! Manchester rod Karl guy continued his run of form weighing 9-12-0 for second place.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal on the Cockfight length and saw Jimmy Byrne win in what was a close field with 4-6-0 of small silver fish. Graham Belton put a similar net on the scales for 4-2-10 and second place. The majority of anglers had over 2lbs.
