26th August 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Eric Smith managed to get a couple of days off last week and decided to give Cicely Mill a try for the first time. His first trip on Thursday afternoon was more of a fact finding mission, but it still produced 3 nice crucian carp all around the 1-12-0 mark. The next day after a 7am start Eric initially putdown a bed of hemp and fished a double hook rig with corn on one hook and double red maggot on the other using a maggot feeder. The day ended with a 4lb bream, a 3.5lb tench, and 13 crucians between 1-10-0 and 1-15-0. Eric commented, "This is the best catch of quality crucians I have had in fifty years angling."

On Sunday Tony Rough fished our stretch of the River Dee at Shocklach and chose a gravel bar swim using a wire stemmed Avon float trotting down and loose-feeding maggots. He started his session with a sea-trout followed by a solitary dace and went on to catch twenty grayling to 1.25lbs. The Dee has to be simply the best river in Europe for this species and well worth a visit.

Our Saturday Mersey Series saw much lower weights than normal but veteran match ace Jimmy Byrne led the field with 4-9-8 of roach and perch followed by Paul Harding on 4-7-0.

Bob Clough made it two wins on the run at Sunday's Mersey match which saw both end pegs produce the goods leaving most of the other anglers struggling for bites. Bob drew end peg 34 and after catching a few bits on the tip switched to the pole which proved to be the winning method. He put 7-11-0 on the scales closely followed by Martin Lenihan on the other end peg 17 who also favoured the pole and ended just 5 ounces short on 7-6-0 to take second place.

The Bank Holiday Special Match appeared to have been fished on a different river judging by the weights recorded. Martin Lenihan stole the show with a magnificent net of bream, skimmers, and roach for 17-7-0 taken fishing both the tip and pole methods. Northwich's Rod Fraser was second with an all roach catch of 12-6-0 taken on the pole.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick this week and saw Jeff Clare win with some plump roach taken on pellet and maggot for 5-11-0. Graham Belton took second place with 3-9-6 but some struggled to find the fish. The old maxim, if they are not in front of you can't catch them, certainly rang true.

The working party on Saturday at Grey Mist Mere cleared more weed and although it seems a daunting task some pegs are now fishable and also nutrients are being removed from the water. It is not all about weed as there are plenty of other jobs that need doing. Another one is organised for Sunday 7th September so if you fancy putting something back into your sport just turn up on the morning.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

19th August 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th August 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Mount at Buckley is hard work if you fish an overnighter as three members found last weekend when they had forty eight carp between them making sleep impossible. Still what a way to be totally out of the game the next day! Best fish was a 14 pounder although there have been a few twenties coming out. Seventy eight years young Tony Ward caught a PB from this fishery in the shape of an immaculate mirror that sent the scales to 13lbs.

It looks as though a father and daughter fishing the corner swim on Sunday at the Mount left an item of tackle. It has been safely retained by a member so please get in touch with me.

Jim Gannon proved yet again that he is magic on the Mersey with a convincing win in our Saturday Mersey Series with a 12-2-6 net which included a 6lbs slab, two skimmers, roach and perch to over double the weight of runner-up Derek Bibby who caught roach and perch but missed out on any bream.

The Rod only match on Sunday saw anglers having to contend with blustery winds and showers but this did not deter Bob Clough who after a spell in the doldrums bounced back in some style and annihilated the rest of the field with a decisive 19-3-0 win. Bob drew peg 74 and fished the groundbait feeder throughout to include four quality bream and a few small silver fish in his winning catch. There was hardly anything separating the next three anglers but Mike Dench took second spot with 7-12-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Mersey this week and saw that man Jim Gannon weave his spell yet again with another decisive win on his favourite groundbait feeder method with 10-2-8 of bream. I have been assured by match organiser Ray Bowden that a number of anglers have sidled up to Jim during the match but came away scratching their heads as he didn't appear to be doing anything different. Runner up was Jim Byrne with 7-3-14.

We have been handing out sample sachets of food to members provided by Stowaway Foods and would appreciate more reports and comments of how much you enjoyed them. We still have some to distribute but if you wish to purchase more you can see the full menu at and obtain them at www.stowawayfoods.com.  Even better if you fancy something quick, wholesome and tasty that doesn't break the bank they have permanently lowered their prices by 20%, offering anglers a delicious selection of bankside food at a bargain price.  Main meals will be reduced from £2.99 to £2.39 and the soups will be reduced from £1.75 to £1.39. Each product has a shelf life of 12 months from the time the product reaches you.

There is another working party on Saturday at Grey Mist Mere so be aware there may be some disruption but it is all to the general benefit of members. Anyone who fancies helping just turn up on the morning, these guys do start early but come when you can they will find you a job.

False alarm the report of last week of botulism at High Legh Fisheries was a none event however thanks to the members who made the report as you cannot be too careful.

12th August 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th August 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Many thanks to the four members who removed 123 barrows of weed Grey Mist Mere on Saturday and also removed member's rubbish. The new weed rakes we purchased were just right for the job, light enough to throw and held enough weed that could be handled. The volunteers will be holding another working party on 23rd August. If you fancy helping to improve your fishery just turn up on the morning. A word of warning to those who find it a bind to take their rubbish home we just don't want you in our club. No excuses, if caught it is an automatic ban. Tench are feeding well on this popular venue and Jonathan Mead reports catching a mirror of 24-12-0 on Wednesday.

Phil Hancock visited Woodshaw Reservoir for the first time this week and was suitably impressed with both the fishing and the immaculate and litter free condition of this pocket sized fishery. It was he said a credit to the team of volunteers who look after the Wigan fisheries on behalf of the members. As regards the fishing Phil caught skimmers, roach, bream, and crucians steadily throughout his session. A return trip is most definitely on the cards.

New Member Andy Williams last visited the Mount as a youngster over 20years ago and made it his first port of call after joining. Andy's short session last Sunday saw him end up with eleven carp to 12lbs. All were caught on homemade 'fishy' boilies. This venue is an excellent general fishery and regularly produces specimen roach, tench, bream, and perch if you set your stall out for them.

Stuart Peters rang me earlier in the week to ask directions to the opposite side of Budworth Mere that we now share with our friends at Northwich AA. I did warn him of the long walk and the heart attack hill on the return journey but he went despite this and was more than happy with the results. In a four hour session he caught six bream to 5lbs plus, hybrids to 3lbs, numerous roach including one of 1.25lbs. All fish were taken on groundbait feeder alternating between double red maggot, worm tipped with maggot, and sweetcorn cocktails.

Adrian Green reported raw sewage flowing into the River Mersey during the recent downpour this past week. Surprisingly when he reported it he received a call back from North West Water to say that it was within acceptable standards. Is too much trouble to install suitable filters in this day and age when pollution of any sort is unacceptable?

It looks like we have a case of botulism at High Legh Fisheries where a member reported on Tuesday that ducks and geese were dead in the water. It appears that this is rife in the Cheshire area. The birds will be removed and buried to prevent further spread.

Match organiser Ray Bowden won this week's Saturday Mersey Series with 8-15-0 of roach and perch taken on pole tactics. Jimmy Byrne was second with a 6-15-0 net of bream, roach, and perch.  Karl Guy notched up his first Mersey win of the season in the Shield Contest on Sunday with a decent bream plus silvers taken on the waggler for 8-0-0. Co-match organiser Paul Harding was runner-up with 7-11-0 of roach and skimmers taken on the feeder whilst the other half of the partnership Ant Higham was back in the money in third spot.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Mersey this week and saw Jimmy Byrne maintain his winning streak with a 10-7-2 catch of skimmers and roach. Runner-up was George Barber with 5-5-0.

5th August 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th August 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Roy Astall only caught one fish at Grey Mist Mere on Wednesday but he was more than pleased because it was a fin perfect 17lbs mirror carp. In a corner weedy swim he set up his old trusty fibreglass rod purchased from Argos some years ago for £14 and fed with a few maggots and sweetcorn. His first fish, probably a tench slipped the 14's hook loaded with a single grain of corn tipped with a maggot but there was no mistaking what he hooked next. The rod doubled over but he kept the pressure on not allowing it to get into the weed and it was soon in the net. He told me he had changed his line before his trip and expecting something like 10/12lbs I was nonplussed when it was only 6lbs.

Sandiway Lakes with our ongoing stocking programme, different for both lakes, is an excellent venue for the present but most definitely a five star venue for the future. Both lakes are rewarding in their own way and set in stunning surroundings repay those that do their homework and put the time in. Barry Powell has been targeting the popular smaller 17.5acre lake where he reports in three trips catching 48 fish. They were not all carp but his best was an unblemished common of 18lbs backed up by several fish around 15lbs and plenty of smaller stockies that are packing on weight, plus quality tench and bream. His best nights result was 25 fish taken on his tried and tested method of firing in balls of Krill groundbait coupled with method mix and two 10mm boilies on the hook.

Eric Smith who fishes this venue with his grandson Callum Postil and mate 'Fishless Fletcher' has been more than pleasantly surprised by the quality and potential of the roach fishing. Red maggot fished in conjunction with a big block-end feeder coupled with an initial 20 balls of groundbait has been the method that is producing lots of plump roach averaging 8ozs. The trio have also caught bream and carp 8-10lb.

I had a trip to Statham Pool this past week where our volunteers have been hard at work improving pegs and access and it really is looking great. They must have sweat some in this weather so many thanks guys. As I left Dave Poole was just setting up for an afternoon session hoping to target the resident carp. He set up two rods fished over a bed of corn and mixed pellets varying the hook-baits but zilch for the first couple of hours. However come late afternoon and his swim was literally fizzing and boiling over with activity. Dave ended up with a countless number of Bream to about 4lbs and a pretty decent sized eel. No carp, but a fun afternoon nevertheless.

Jim Gannon showed his mastery fishing the tip in this week's Saturday Mersey Series for a decisive win with 13-2-0 which included to bream around the 5lbs mark plus small dace and chub. Derek Bibby fishing on the pole was runner-up with 5lbs of small perch, dace, and chub. A groundbait-feeder approach also earned Jimmy Byrne a win in Sunday's Tom James Open from new peg numbered 66a. Fishing double maggot on the hook his all bream catch weighed in at 14-6-0 followed by match co-organiser Paul Harding using the same method with 9-12-0.

Any member fishing for whatever species has a primary duty of care their quarry, not so a pair fishing near Mersey Walk this week whose actions undoubtedly brought about the death on a decent sized pike. This pair had no forceps in their possession and according to a witness their attempts at unhooking the fish saw them drop it a number of times. To compound matters they refused to show their WAA licence to another member.

Our Disabled & Over 670's match was fished at Stage Lane this week and saw the top two anglers draw on bream. Match ace Jimmy Byrne put 13-14-6 on the scales and Geoff Brooks 11-14-10 to take second place.

There is a working party at Grey Mist Mere on Saturday clearing both weed from a number of pegs and the rubbish discarded by so called anglers. Early start but you are welcome whenever you arrive.

Ian Shepherd is planning a working party at High Legh Fishery to tidy up and improve this fishery. If you are interested you can email him direct at isheppard44@yahoo.co.uk
