29th July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

I enjoyed a trip out to Woodshaw Reservoir on Monday evening to have a chin-wag with the team and coaches who just happened to be running their annual youngsters BBQ prize giving match the sequel to the Woodshaw Junior Series won as reported last week by Lewis Turner. It was a cracking turnout of youngsters and supportive parents, everyone received a prize goody bag and the beef burgers etc. also went down very nicely. Many thanks to everyone who made this such a successful event.

Paul Wood enjoyed a six hour session on this same venue where fishing the pole at 10metres and alternating between pellet and corn he had roach to 8ozs and around fifty crucians to 2.5lbs. Ian Dempsey fished the water on Friday and got amongst the tench using pole and soft paste taking fish to over 3lbs. This venue is worth a visit and if you have not yet made the trip you are missing out.

Sandiway Lakes are notorious for their secrets being kept close to the chest by members who seem afraid that if catches are reported 'the place will be rammed'. Both lakes offer different challenges but generally are producing the goods depending on your quarry, be it carp, tench, or bream which seem to be the main target species. Chris Bates reports five tench, all females from Big Sandiway this past week, although targeting carp he was well pleased with fish between 8 and just over 10lbs. For the record he did lose a carp but that's fishing.

With low flow and possibly oxygen levels down the Mersey didn't fish too well on this week's Saturday match but Jeff Shaw showed his mastery of slider fishing with an all roach catch for 6-9-0 followed in second place by skimmer magnet Jim Gannon with 2-15-0 taken on the tip. The Sunday series more or less mirrored the previous day with newcomer Rod Frazer who cut his teeth on the Weaver taking the money with 4-7-13 taken on the waggler and alternating between maggot and caster. Ray Bowden fishing the pole wasn't too far behind in runner-up spot with 4-2-6.

Our Disabled & Over 670's match was fished at Preston Brook this week and saw Jeff Clare double the weight of his nearest rival with 7-14-1 boosted by a couple of decent bream plus small silvers. Alan Brown was in second place with 3-14-2 and there was only ounces separating a good number of weights. Match organiser John Dagnall was first out of the coin.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

22nd July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Although most rivers are suffering from lower flows anglers are still heading to these venues due to both their primeval urge and the excitement of fishing running water. Ian Ostern had a quick trip to the Wye and ended up with four barbel for his trouble including a PB at 13-0-4. All fell to the usual feeder tactics involving halibut pellets. Roger Dunning fished stick float alternating between maggot and caster at the bottom end of our Worthenbury stretch to have a cracking day in the deeper water with dace, chub, and after moving further down the swim where it shallows to a run he started picking up grayling with fish to 1.5lbs.

Keen young angler Lewis Hermes loves the Mount where on Friday our bailiff took some pics of a stunning linear mirror of 15-8-0 that he had caught. Lewis was back there on Monday for a short session ending up with a 7lbs mirror topped by a 22lbs common from this prolific and popular fishery. Our Bailiff Brian Jones report some nice roach catches on the feeder but the icing on the cake and fish of a lifetime was a specimen that sent the scales just nudging over 3lbs. All fell to 10mm boilies with a secret twist, but the trick is to try to avoid the carp, then the roach move in. If you are contemplating doing a night be prepared to miss out on sleep completely, that is unless you reel in! Sport is that good.

The Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series winner on Monday was Lewis Turner with a mixed net for 5-0-0. Runner-up was Dane Rawlinson with 4-5-0. Lewis's final match win cinched the series Individual Championship for him with 91.5 points and total weight of 63-1-0, leaving James Brown a worthy runner-up in this closely contested series with 86 points.

The Mersey really fished well this week and saw match organiser Ray Bowden win with a mixed net of roach, chub, dace, and a .75lbs perch for 7-11-0. Runner-up was Jim Gannon with 7-3-0 who for the record has made the frame at every Saturday series match. Pike were active throughout the match (they don't count), pity because Derek Bibby landed a 10 pounder.

The Mersey was also kind to our Briars Cup Open winner Neil Buist who fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot from peg 72 clocked up his second win of the season. He had a decent bream and a good back up of skimmers for 12-8-0 and well clear of runner-up was Jeff Shaw on 9-8-0.

15th July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Mick Moore had a hair raising experience whilst fishing the River Dee at Worthenbury on Saturday when totally engrossed and enjoying his fishing he was suddenly aware of cows coming down to drink. Unperturbed he carried on fishing, that is until they were joined by a very large bull by which time he was surrounded. Not only that but they were nosing and pawing his fishing bag that he had left on the bank only to see it start floating and sink. At this point he moved further downstream and made it back to his car. Problem, the keys were in his bag! As regards the fishing it had been fabulous with 8 brown trout, three around the pound mark, plus a dozen grayling the last two before the bull appeared were in the 1.5lbs range. Method was stick-float loose-feeding red and white maggots. But every cloud has a silver lining because three days later and another member retrieved the bag and most other bits including car keys , but he was by this time £90 out of pocket, the price of a replacement set.

Steve Oliver did a repeat performance to again take the honours in our Mersey Saturday Sweepstake with a mixed net for 5-8-0 followed in second place by James Byrnes almost a pound lighter at 4-9-8.

Following the night's heavy rain the river was flying through carrying rafts of weed and general flotsam plus anglers had to contend with a 9.5metre tide making less than ideal conditions. Having said that Neil Davies made the most of drawing a peg with some slack water and fished the pole and maggot throughout the match to produce a mixed bag for 10lbs exactly. Runner-up Jimmy Byrne needed a 50gm groundbait feeder to hold bottom in the flow for his roach and perch net of 7-12-0.

The Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series winner on Monday was Dylan Anglesea with a mixed net for 8-0-0. Runner-up was Lewis Turner with 7-6-0. There is only next week's match to decide the series winner and three anglers are within four points of each other so it will be a nail biting final.

This week's Junior Summer Series was back to the Mersey and saw David Smith prove he could master both the commercial angling skills of his previous weeks win and also a natural and much harder natural venue on the river with 3-10-8, after all a win is a win. Runner up was Morgan Adawee with 2-8-10.

The Mersey Saturday Sweepstake this last week saw newcomer Steve Oliver take the honours with 8-4-3 followed in runner-up spot by regular Paul Harding on 7-6-0 whose catch was helped greatly by a 5lbs bream

Another Mersey win for in form Lee Clarke who won the Sid Jones Open with a bream catch of three fish for 14-15-0 taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Ray Bowden fished the pole throughout to come second with a mixed net of roach, perch, and small chub for 8-3-0. It was nice to see co-match organiser Ant Higham back amongst the coin for the third time this year.

The Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series winner on Monday was Matt Dawber with a mixed net of fish for 8-2-0. Runner-up was Matthew Bateson with 6-4-0. The league to date with two matches to go is wide open but is being currently led by Lewis Turner with 69.5 points and James Brown hard on his heels with 67.5. Also congratulations to our Woodshaw Junior Team who won the Manchester County Angling Development Group team event at Bradshaw Fisheries last weekend, not forgetting the coaching team and helpers.

This week's Junior Summer Series was fished on Dunham Fishery and saw David Smith win with 33lbs exactly followed by Morgan Adawee close behind on 29-11-0. Adam Harman was a clear winner of the Intermediates with 38-2-0. Our Minnows /Beginners really struggled for bites this week on the Bridgewater Canal but Ethan Owen came out in the lead with 12-11. Many thanks to Fiona Eaton for donating the prize to the winning junior last week it was certainly very much appreciated by all.

1st July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st July 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Saturday Mersey Sweepstake match winner was Jim Gannon who included a superb bream of 7-12-0 in his 12-4-0 catch. Runner-up was match organiser Ray with 7-1-8. With feed going in regularly on both Saturday and Sunday it will certainly attract fish to these areas and can only improve.

Lewis Turner was the top rod in the popular Woodshaw junior series this week with 11lbs and just over 4lbs to spare over runner-up James Brown who weighed in 6-15-0. The series so far is being led by Lewis with 11points just one point ahead of James so you can almost taste the rivalry.

Just to remind members that anyone fishing or just visiting Appleton Reservoir must use our official locked car park. We have had this fishery nigh on 100 years without complaints from our neighbours and that is how it will remain. So, car park or card, your choice. The same applies to locking gates or barriers as decent members are fed up with the few morons who are too idle to carry out this simple task.

Paul hooker and his uncle David Farthing enjoyed a great days fishing at Rixton Claypits on Saturday where they caught forty six fish tench and bream between them with the biggest around 4lbs. Paul had the lions share with thirty three but considering that his uncle is a dedicated sea angler I think he had better watch out if he takes up the coarse fishing seriously.

On Wednesday Chris Goodlad visited the new stretch of Budworth Mere that we share with Northwich Anglers. I did warn him that it was for only the keenest (and fittest) of anglers as it is quite a hike which possibly explains why there was nobody else on the bank. After a bite less 2 hours or so he was doubting his venue choice when the tip shot round signalling his first bream. The next two hours were to use his words "Like Ireland" as he finished up with a round dozen fish to 6lbs. I fancy Budworth will be seeing a lot more of him.

On our Mersey Sunday Series Neil Buist aka The Engine had a head to head battle with Alan Morris on the next peg but he came out on top with the best winning weight of the year with 27-5-0 with Alan on 16-14-0. Both featured bream in their catches along with perch and roach that were all caught on ground bait feeder tactics.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips.
