25th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Alan Davenport in his quest to fish all our waters visited the Bridgewater Canal and Rixton Claypits this past week. On the canal he float fished mackerel and lamprey roving between Houghs Bridge and the Toast Rack at Chester Road and caught a pike on each. The Claypits saw him net a bream of 2lbs and a tench of 5lbs. There will be a temporary break in his quest due to work commitments.

Eric Smith with his grandson 12 years old Callum Postill visited Grey Mist Mere on Sunday and caught nine tench between them. Callum had fish of 5-14-0, 5-1-0, 4-10-0, 4-8-0, and a personal best weighing 6-1-0. Not to be completely outdone by his protégé Eric had fish of 7lbs, 6-4-0, and two around 5.5lbs. All the fish were caught on a maggot feeder rig using double red maggot on the hook.

Dave Poole landed his first tench of the year on a visit to Rixton Claypits that fell to inline feeder tactics and double dead red maggot on the hook. It was a new PB and weighed 6-2-0. The fish came as part of a cracking bream catch of 15 to 20 fish all around 2 to 3lbs. He lost a really large fish towards the end of his five hour session that simply went off like a torpedo taking him round the island where it was a case of nice knowing you.

The fourth round of the Cheshire Spring League will be fished on the Macclesfield Canal at Henshall Drive on Saturday.  Bob Campbell currently heads the leader board with 3 points closely followed by match ace Phil Cross. Can Bob maintain his so far perfect score …..? See next week’s column for the answer.

Alan Brown won his second match of the year in our Disabled & Over 60’s event on Monday with almost a pound to spare over his nearest challenger and local match legend Jimmy Byrne. Alan put 3-5-0 on the scales against Jimmy’s 2-7-0.

Match organiser John Dagnall had a bit of bad luck, in fact if caught on camera it would have gone viral on YouTube. It all started when he fancied a cuppa and stood up to reach his flask from his trolley, not a problem you would think. Well, in the act of standing his bib and brace caught on his fishing box causing him to overbalance and sent him crashing down to land only inches from the canal edge. Dusting himself down it was only then that he realised his cuppa had cost him very dear as he surveyed his three sections of now broken pole which included the 13metre section. Ouch! To his credit when most would have packed up and gone home he fished on and although he only caught four tiny fish for 4oz he was happy because he beat a certain WAA Vice President on the next peg who had one tiny roach. Now that’s fishing.

There is another working party at Statham Pool on Saturday starting 10am if you fancy helping to improve your fishing just turn up and you will be made more than welcome.

A pair of spectacles found at Grey Mist Mere have been handed into HQ Parker Street. The owner can collect them on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 18th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The third round of the Cheshire Spring League was fished on Saturday between Houghs and the Toast Rack Bridges. Did Bob Campbell make the cut?  Well, yes he did with another single point section score despite only making fourth place overall on the day. So currently he is still in the lead with a perfect three points tally closely followed by Phil Cross on four. Jimmy Byrne and Martin Lenihan fished as guests and Jimmy Byrne finished up the individual winner with a nice net of silver fish for 6-10-10 and Martin Lenihan took second place with 4-0-4.

George Hollis enjoyed his first win of 2014 in our Disabled & Over 60’s match this week in what was another close contest with only 4oz separating the top three individuals. This week saw a change of venue to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road where George put his vast knowledge of this fishery to gain the advantage with a net of 3-6-0. Runner-up Bud Lee weighed his catch at 3-4-4.

Thirteen years old Lewis Harmes and his uncle had a good session on the Mount this past week and considering the poor sport to be had on other waters they had a brilliant day's fishing. His uncle landed 8 carp taken on a helicopter rig with the biggest being 14lb and not to be left out this fishing mad youngster caught two stunning commons which were around 9lb and 7lb. To quote Lewis, “I was over the moon with the catch and I am going to fish the water a lot more.”

Whilst some members have currently found bites hard to come by at Woodshaw Reservoir Ian Smythe bucked the trend and enjoyed some cracking sport with crucians and roach for an estimated 20lbs plus net of fish. He fished the pole at 5metres and alternated between his home made paste concoction and maggot.

Around our fisheries if you fancy some feeder fishing the middle lake at Worthington is worth a visit for bream averaging 3lbs with occasional larger specimens and some plump roach.  Don’t forget the smallest reservoir, Adlington is closed until the 16th June. Any person caught leaving litter whether they are a full or a day member will be the subject of an instant ban. Day members are subject to all the rules of our club.

I would ask all members to keep their eyes peeled for poachers fishing our river fisheries during the coarse fish close season as this is the time when they have the rivers to themselves. However we do have extra eyes and ears as a number of River Mersey poachers found out to their considerable cost. I won’t mention them here but the individuals and organisations know who I am talking about and believe me their help and cooperation in such matters is really appreciated. Of course there are additional hazards that often surface surprisingly during this time such as mysterious pollution incidents. The bottom line every time in all instances is to ring the Environment Agency Incident Line immediately on 0800 807060 and myself on 01928 716238.

11th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The third round of the Cheshire Spring League is to be fished on Saturday between Houghs and the Toast Rack (A56) Bridges. I wonder can Bob Campbell come up with yet another end peg draw and add another single point to his so far perfect score. He is up against some top class anglers so anything could happen. Watch this space.

The last match in our Mersey Sunday Series fell rather flat as although the river looked perfect and the weather fine and dry the fish decided not to play. The epic battle of the giants between Ray Bowden and Roy Everson who were tying on seven wins apiece was declared a draw so no blood spilled and all bets were declared null and void. Martin Lenihan took the main money on the day with a mixture of pole and tip caught small roach for 2-8-6. It could have been all so different if third placed Eddie Frangleton hadn’t lost a large bream at the net. We have all been there helplessly watching the match winner sink slowly into the depths just out of our reach. Many thanks to match organisers Ant Higham and Paul Harding who have worked tirelessly throughout the series. Without such volunteers these events just would not happen. I believe both have booked in rehab for the next three months!

It may well be that the milder weather is responsible for the lower weights in our Disabled & Over 60’s match this week as the fish start to leave their winter quarters in the Dead Length where they traditionally shoal up for the cold weather but move into the rest of the canal ready for spawning. I know that this event should be a good way off but the conditions are such that everything could be much earlier this year. It was close between the first three anglers but match ace Jimmy Byrne won the day with 3-15-8 with just 2.5oz separating him from Lenny (End Peg) Dutton who was really gutted having only needed another fish to have got his hands on the main money.

New Member Tony Rough followed up his first trip to one of our fisheries, The Mount, with what many would think a rather strange second choice of the River Gowy, or was it? Well this underrated tiny fishery that the vast majority of us drive across on the M56 without even a sideways glance actually does hold a good head of fish as it is stuffed with natural food such as shrimp and snails. On Sunday Tony first tried a couple of swims near Plemstall Church but zilch so he moved downstream of the A45 Bridge where he found more depth and a bit of colour in the water. Loose-feeding maggot and fishing a small stick float he caught a plump roach on his first cast and ended his session with 25 to 30 roach to a pound, happy days.

Alan Davenport in his quest to fish all our waters went to the Dane this week at Holmes Chapel where using both cheese paste and trotted maggots he managed to winkle out four half decent chub with the smallest 3lbs and the best 3-12-0 along with a couple of dace and the inevitable minnows.

Don’t forget if you have not yet received your 2014 membership book you had better let me know as they have been out now since mid-February. The old 2013 books are now invalid and as usual it is pay before you play.

4th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th March 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The second round of the Cheshire Spring League was fished on the Macclesfield Canal at Scholar Green following a heavy frost (it is degrees colder in Congleton). However all members managed a few bites but last week’s winner Bob Campbell drew another end peg and clocked up his second win with 4-0-15 of bread punch caught roach. Adam Harman on the next peg was just a shade over 2ozs short of the winner but took runner-up spot with 3-14-10. Mike Dench included a perch of 2lbs plus a few roach for third place. A long way to go yet but with a perfect point score Bob is heading the leader board with 2 points.

With the coarse fish close season on rivers kicking in from the 15th March to 15th June inclusive this Sunday is the last hoorah for our Mersey Sunday Series devotees. Hopefully the river will produce some stunning sport for our match this weekend. Weights were low again and after an hour bites were few and far between so another grueller looked to be on the cards. Matters were not helped by a 10metre tide slap bang in the middle of the match that saw most anglers rapidly moving their tackle to the safety of higher ground. Jimmy Byrne had been catching a few small roach but after the tidal ebb Eddie Frangleton started to pick up a few more  fish with the end result that his 2-4-14 relegated Jimmy into second place. Messrs Everson and Bowden are still both on seven wins apiece so it’s going to the wire but Betfred is not taking any more bets!

Bud Lee had over a pound to spare over his nearest rival on our Disabled & Over 60’s match when he put 5-12-8 of bread caught small roach and skimmers on the scales pushing match ace Jimmy Byrne into second place with 4-6-14 taken on pinkie. Fished between the Toast Rack and Houghs Bridges there were lots of fish caught and also quite a few snatched and lost to marauding pike.  Geoff Brooks who was catching well in the match saw a youngster visibly upset as he had dropped his scarf into the canal and always the Good Samaritan he offered the father the use of his landing net. As the clothing item was being retrieved some distance away Geoff hooked into a really good sized bream which caused £ signs to dance before his eyes. He skilfully played, and played, and played the large fish because he desperately needed that net. Just as the net was back within reach the fish made one last lunge and freedom. Geoff managed his section as a consolation but I very much doubt the truth of the ugly rumour that some fellow anglers actually thanked the lad’s father. Anyway, well done Geoff you are a credit to your sport.

Last week Alan Davenport visited our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery where using waggler tactics with bread punch and feeding liquidised bread he caught around 10lbs of roach and chub that were around the pound mark. Roach averaged 3oz with the odd fish ranging between 6 and 8oz.  Alan has starting from this week set himself a quest of fishing all of our waters, all previous visits don’t count so he is starting from scratch. This week he fished the Mersey for pike having never previously targeted predators on the river and bingo his first success, only a small fish but target met.
