30th August 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Good news for river anglers this week is that we have just this week leased a stretch of the upper River Alyn at Caergwrle. It covers approximately half a mile of both banks and offers good parking and access. Apparently the previous club had it for many years but it has not been leased out for some time. It holds mainly trout and grayling and will suit both fly and  bait anglers although at present the water levels are low, but it is something different. Maps and directions will be out as soon as possible. Thanks to our bailiff Mike Lewis for all his help during negotiations for this acquisition.

Liam Morris caught twenty three quality crucians on his visit the Cicily Mill Pool this past week whilst his fishing mate Bill Coombes managed three crucians and some decent bream, all fish fell to ledgered maggot. Unfortunately the visit was marred for Bill when a light fingered opportunist stole his new brolly that was leaning against his car. If anyone has any information on this incident please contact me in strictest confidence. I would like to think that this was taken into safe custody to be eventually returned to its rightful owner, if not we do not want such scum in the ranks of our members.

Philip Sutton inspired by Mark Pritchard's  report on his Mersey catches visited the venue and had his best ever session taking a good catch of skimmers on both the feeder and waggler using maggot. It just goes to show that members who share their fishing exploits can assist fellow anglers.

The final of the Woodshaw Reservoir Junior Series took place on Monday ending with a prize presentation where nobody left empty hand and of course the usual barbeque. The match was won by James Brown with 5-6-0 but the series overall winner was Lewis Turner. Thanks to all concerned who helped to make this a success.

Members Paul Floyd and Gerry Gleeson are taking part in the Barbel Society Challenge in aid of the Army Benevolent Fund and will be fishing fourteen rivers and hopefully catching a double figure barbel from each venue. It runs from the 8th to 22nd August and the aim is to get sponsorship for each double figure fish caught. Cheques or postal orders should be made out to The Army Benevolent Fund and sent to:- Gerry Gleeson 42 Freemantle Street, Edgeley, Stockport SK3 9LF. Paypal donations to Gerry-gleeson1@hotmail.com.

Keep sending in your catch reports which are invaluable to this column and fellow members. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9-00pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

23rd July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Mark Pritchard reports a busy four hour session on the River Mersey catching thirty five perch to 12 ounces, sixteen roach, and most exciting because it shows that they are breeding a chub of 12ounces. He was also ripped off twice by really big fish that made short work of his 1.5lbs breaking strain hook length. Method was a small waggler and double maggot on a size 18's hook fished at one and a half rod lengths.

I'll bet nobody's taking the Mickey out of Ray Bowden's lucky Panama hat now as he showed the way again this week taking first place on Sunday's Mersey match with an increased weight of 8-15-9. It really doesn't get much closer as Stu Conroy was less than on ounce behind Ray with a catch of 8-14-11.

The inaugural Jack Bellis Memorial Match on the Bridgewater Canal saw Jimmy Byrne take top spot with 5-14-12 and up and coming young match angler Nathan Rowles the runner-up with 5-9-1. David Smith easily won the 'Jacks Match' junior event with a cracking weight of 10-0-0 comprised of three bream and four perch all taken on white maggot. Runner-up Lewis Wright with 1-11-5 was fishing one of his first serious matches so was really happy with his result, and on his birthday too.

The working party is on again this Sunday at our new Offa's Dyke Coarse Fishery. If you fancy helping cold drinks and sandwiches will be provided. Post code CH7 4LQ takes you just short of it but the entrance is by the permanent road narrows traffic lights, our blue WAA sign is on the entrance, just drive through to the car park 100yds on your left. Ask for Brian Jones on arrival.

16th July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

16th July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our second Association Match (Rod Only) saw improved results from what has been a dour Mersey so far this season. Winner Ray Bowden had a nice net of perch and roach taken on his trusty 18ft rod for 6-4-0. The bright sunshine was a problem for the majority of competitors but Ray wearing his new Panama hat was unaffected. Roy Everson took the runner up spot with 4-14-8.

Paul Smith and Mark Scholes had a good session on Rixton Claypits this past week; Paul caught plenty of roach 6 to 8ozs, bream 2 to 5lbs, a tench of 3lbs, topped by a 13lbs common all taken on the pole using pellet and corn. Mark had loads of roach and perch, three nice bream, and a tench. They witnessed a member who was surface fishing catch two carp, one of 15lbs with the largest weighing 23lbs. To quote Paul, "The place is awesome."

Volunteers helping to prepare Phoenix Park Lake in readiness for the annual Family Fishing Taster Day on Wednesday 24th July have done an excellent job to ensure the event goes without a hitch fishing wise. The rest is down to Mo, Jane and our qualified coaches who will be in attendance from 10am until 2pm on the day.

Thanks to those members who took part in the working party last weekend at Offa's Dyke Coarse Fishery. Work there is progressing but it is not yet open to members, however if you would like to speed up the process the working party is on again 9am Sunday. If you can bring gloves, and whatever tools you can lay your hands on such as loppers, handsaws, etc. Cold drinks and sandwiches will be provided. 9th July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Challenge Shield held on the Mersey on Sunday produced low weights; however the good news is that the river is lifting with fry. And it gets even better as Bernard Anderson who set his sights on carp had a koi of 17lbs and a mirror about 10lbs but was pestered by bream. A change to lighter tackle and a change from boilie to maggot on the hook and a swimfeeder saw him catch twenty five averaging between 4 and 5lbs plus perch to 1.5lbs and a cracking dace, although his following two visits were less productive as the shoal had moved.

The working party on Sunday at Offa's Dyke Coarse Fishery saw eight members turn up and make a good start on the oldest of the pools. The weather wasn't ideal on what I think was the hottest day of the year but we all got stuck in removed lots of self seeded saplings with help from the farmer and his trusty Grey Fergie, pruned overgrown trees, strimmed pathways, and removed weed and obstructions.

There is still plenty to do before the pool is opened up to fishing so another working party is on again on Sunday meet 9am on car park. If you can bring gloves, and whatever tools you can lay your hands on such as loppers, handsaws, etc. Cold drinks (non-alcoholic) and sandwiches will be provided. Post code CH7 4LQ takes you just short of it but the entrance is by the permanent road narrows traffic lights, our blue WAA sign is on the entrance, just drive through to the car park 100yds on your left. Ask for Brian Jones on arrival.

David Robinson tried his hand on the Dee at Worthenbury but only managed a few trout trotting down with maggot and lost a decent sized grayling at the net. The water was low and clear with the bright conditions not conducive to bagging-up.

There has been a report on an opportunist tackle theft from Sandiway small lake where a rod bag containing spare rods, and a general 'bits' bag including membership cards was stolen from outside a bivvi. Neither the owner, his two mates close by, nor other members heard or saw anything untoward. None of the rods in use were touched.

A situation arose last weekend when members who booked on Sandiway small lake failed to turn up or cancel. This is thoughtlessness effectively denied fellow members the opportunity to fish. Be warned that the rules are quite clear and the committee can and will discontinue permits of offenders. The rules are in place to make it fair for all members.

Well done to our Warrington AA Woodshaw Team who came second in the Manchester CAGG team event and also gained first and runner up individual places.

Tuesday 2 July 2013

2nd July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd July 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Some really good news this week is that Warrington Anglers Association has now acquired the lease on Offa's Dyke Coarse Fishery situated at Mold, Flintshire. It has three pools set in a mixture of fields and woodland and was previously run as a day ticket fishery. Exact fish stocks are unknown but I have witnessed plenty of fry and feeding fish on the original pool so it will be a case of suck it and see. Initially it needs some TLC such as trimming bushes, weed removal, grass cutting, and general peg maintenance so we are now looking for volunteers to help complete this work before it is opened up to our membership. Interested in speeding up the process? We are running a working party on Sunday 7th July, starting around 9ish. Please give me a ring. Those who help out will get the first chance to fish it whilst we evaluate fish stocks.

Mel McGall a member from Devon certainly enjoyed his narrow boat holiday on the Bridgewater Canal. He especially liked the Lymm area where he claimed to have eaten the best sausage and chips he had ever tasted only bettered by the quality bream that he caught on the Bridgewater Canal.  Fishing a size 10's hook hair rigged with two pieces of corn and tipped by a flouro- pink maggot he was definitely not targeting smaller species and reckoned that this was the first time he had needed to play bream as they fought like tigers. All fish were in the 4 to 5lbs range.

We run a weekly Minnows match for beginners every Tuesday evening draw at 6pm on the Bridgewater Canal opposite Euclid Avenue, Grappenhall. We have coaches in attendance to help youngsters improve their skills and altogether it is a fun evening where you will meet others who share your interest in angling. Contact Helen Dagnall at Cheshire Angling on 01925 635486 or simply turn up at the draw, all welcome. If you haven't fished before but fancy having a go then ring Helen and she will organise some tackle for you to use.
