17th December 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th December 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Jimmy Byrne won our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Dead Length of the Bridgewater Canal on Monday. Jimmy put an all roach catch on the scales for 4-2-12 taken on the pole using bread punch but taking better fish later on caster. Following close on his heels with a mixed net of roach and perch was Graham Belton who luckily drew an end peg and certainly made it pay with 4lbs exactly. And believe it or not George Barber was in receipt of coin yet again!  Please note that the draw venue for the match next week is the Warrington Gun Club car park.

The Mersey was carrying quite a lot of extra water for this weeks popular Sunday Series event but this did not phase winner Ray Bowden who showed his mastery of the pole by weighing in 4-0-8 of small roach and perch. It was good to see organiser Ant Higham in the frame once again. Ant along with his mate Paul Harding run this event every week which I know is appreciated by everyone.

The final match in the Pairs Series was fished at Walton last Saturday in difficult windy conditions that saw some anglers really struggling for fish.  It was tight at the top with just 5 points separating the top two, and all eyes were on the draw! When Mike Savage and Craig Lowndes both drew well and Kev Green and Adam Harman only managed an average draw, it was game on......

As I predicted last week it was a close run thing with Mike and Craig narrowing the gap to within 2 points. However Kev Green and Adam Harman rose to the challenge to take the pairs series overall. Neil Davies and Bob Campbell held their third place with Neil winning the day individually, catching some quality roach for 4-2-8.

After the Christmas break, probably mid-February Jeff Stoll intends to run a Spring Series if there is sufficient interest and weather permitting.

New member Chris Latham and two of his mates fished the Dane on Sunday and although it was hard Chris landed a decent chub using a maggot feeder and red maggot plus they each had a few decent sized grayling and trout.

Dan Caen reports a barbel of 10-2-0 from the Dane that he caught using Bait-Tech hybrid barbel hook baits and a korum cage feeder packed with ground trout pellet hemp and 4 mm pellets. He was well tooled up for the task using 10lb mainline and a 3ft braid hook length and size 8 Drennan specimen hook.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 9th December 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th December 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Northern Angling Show held at Event City in Manchester is growing from strength to strength, well our WAA team certainly enjoyed themselves meeting and chatting to existing members and of course enrolling new ones.  Although anglers obviously have to pay an entrance fee it is your show in the North West so unless you wish to continually be travelling southwards make sure that you visit again next year and spread the word.

Rarely out of the prize money of late George Barber won our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday with a mixed net of roach and perch for 3-0-10. Derek Bibby was runner up with all the 2's 2-2-2 of perch. Again a good turn out with lots of bites albeit small fish.

River conditions were not too bad for our annual Mersey Fur & Feather Match that saw committee member Graham Belton who had suffered blanks in the two previous years events draw 71, one of the boss pegs. Still you still have to make it happen and Graham fished a perfect match putting an all roach catch of 7-8-15 on the scales. He fished the pole at 14metres and loose-fed maggot, alternating between red and white on the hook. Martin Griffiths was runner-up with 6-3-8. Although a million miles from the main prizes Ant Higham had high expectations and was looking forward to his usual bottle of Blue Nun only to see it converted to a box of biscuits before his very eyes!

All our thanks must go to Cheshire Angling who every year convert the WAA donation into enough prizes for everyone on not only this event but also on the Disabled & Over 60's prize match.

The final leg of our Pairs Series will be fished on Saturday on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton. Hot favourites Kev Green & Adam Harman are 5 points ahead of the Mike Savage & Craig Lowndes duo but with not too much separating the next two pairs anything can happen. Watch this space.

There is a working party on the Mount at Buckley on Sunday. Organiser Derek Cowell is bringing the mince pies so if you fancy helping out simply turn up around 9ish. You will be made very welcome.

Twenty five hardy souls turned for our Disabled & Over 60's event held on Monday where sport although not hectic was far better than the previous week where frosts put the fish off the feed. Alan Brown had 3-0-0 of roach and second placed Ron Durr was not too far behind with 2-9-2. Totally opposite from last week it was an all roach event save for one solitary skimmer that bucked the trend.

The John Lavery Memorial Series that is run on an overall points system ended up a close run thing between Lenny Dutton and Jimmy Byrne. Lenny was the victor with only a single point margin on 16 against Jimmy's 17.

Weights improved on this week's Mersey Series that saw Ray Bowden win the event from end peg number 68. Not that Ray needs an end peg to win but it helps as he put a cracking net of roach and perch on the scales for 9-14-0. Ray caught steadily trotting through his swim fishing bolognaise style with maggots. Paul Harding stuck to his favourite feeder and tip tactics for second spot with a similar mix of fish for 7-1-12. Don't forget this coming Sunday is our members only Fur & Feather ticket only prize event. Get yours from Cheshire Angling.

Also members are reminded that all official WAA matches are advertised and they must move if asked by the organiser. Nowadays we do not have many matches so this rarely is a problem but it can be once anglers draw their pegs and arrive at the waterside to find someone already fishing.

26th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

26th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Many thanks to all the volunteers that turned up on Friday to help at Warrington Anglers Association annual carp stocking program, so many in fact that regulars Steve Kemble and myself were relegated to numbering the fish and writing down the weights. Certainly no complaints there as a 'job swap' with those members who spent hours in freezing water lovingly releasing the fish was a welcome change.

There were lots of oohs and aahs as the fantastic VS Fisheries carp were released into their new homes at Sandiway Lakes where 45xC4's went into the 17.5acre fishery and 9xC6's into the main 53 acre specimen lake. It was the turn of Moore Quarry next and again the welcoming committee took over ferrying the 15 C5 fish after weighing to our by now freezing chest wader wearing water babies for release to the murky depths and a new life. Grey Mist Mere followed suit with a 25 C5 introduction

For the record the C4's varied from 8 to over 10lbs, C5's 13.5 to 15.5lbs, and the C6's saw 3 fish averaging 18.5 with 6 around 20.5lbs. These fish are ordered two years in advance with current orders in place until winter 2015. Our intrepid photographer worked overtime to upload pictures onto our Facebook page and our webmaster will shortly put them on our website.

A late report from Keith Sutton of an incredible catch of sixteen prime roach from the Mount three weeks ago taken on pole and pellet. In company with his young grandson who was fishing next to him they were both catching an endless stream of small perch and roach on 4mm offerings when Keith decided to step up to a banded 10mm  pellet hoping for a carp. His float dipped almost as it hit the water resulting in an awesome red finned beauty of just over 2lbs looking up at him from the folds of his landing net. This was followed by fifteen others with the best weighed at 2-14-0.

On the match scene weights plummeted following the heavy frosts with not a single angler breaking the 1lb barrier on our Disabled & Over 60's event held on Monday at Pickering Bridge. Keith Wernham took the winner's purse with 11-12 closely followed by match organiser John Dagnall on 11-4. For the record only small perch were caught with the exception of George Barber who snared a lonely roach. I must admit this area that many years ago was a prolific match venue has never recovered from a severe dredging operation and marginal weed removal operation at that time.

Our Mersey Series saw Manchester rod Karl Guy romp home to his first win in two years on the river with 4-14-4 which included a bonus bream and skimmers taken on a block end feeder and maggot. Ray Bowden was second with 2-9-4.

As the weather goes colder I would really appreciate any catch reports. These are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. 19th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

I had the phone call I have been waiting for from Viv Sheers on Monday of this week to say that due to the possibility of a freeze-up he is bringing our fish order on Friday 22nd November. This is our ongoing annual carp stocking program that will start at Sandiway Lakes at approximately 9am. Members are more than welcome if they would like to see the quality fish supplied by VS Fisheries released into their new homes at this venue, Moore Quarry, and Grey Mist Mere. If anyone would like to really get down and dirty and help then bring a pair of chest waders. The fish will be a mixture of three year classes, C4's, 5's, and 6's all with known certificated lineage.

Saturday saw the third leg of our Pairs event held on our stretch of the Macclesfield Canal at Congleton. The canal fished well taking into account the colder weather and individual winner Neil Davies made good use of his end peg advantage alternating between bread punch and worm  for a weight of 7-6-6 which was made up of a 2lbs plus perch and roach. Runner- up Kev Green with 5-1-11 was drawn in the same section and also had a bonus perch and roach. Kev Green and Adam Harman snatched the pairs lead with an overall 17 points total.

Derek Bibby was the top rod at our Mersey Series this week with 5-9-7 catch of roach and perch taken on a groundbait feeder and red maggot from peg 74. Martin Lennihan was a very close second with a similar net of fish for 5-6-7 alternating between pole and the feeder. Last weeks winner Ant Higham went for the treble and glory by targeting as usual the rivers large bream but it was a no show and he bombed out in a fast flowing river. A second reminder that our annual Mersey Fur & Feather Match is to be held on 8th December (strictly members only) book in with Cheshire Angling to ensure your place.

The colder weather caused the weights to drop on our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match held on the Bridgewater Canal at Red Lane. Ron Durr put together an all roach catch taken on the pole and punch for 3-1-10 and Geoff Brooks was runner-up with 2-13-2.

Tuesday 12 November 2013

12th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Ant Higham has won our Mersey Series for the second week in succession as he made the most of another end peg draw to put 7-9-12 on the scales made up of a bonus bream, skimmers and roach. Runner-up Ray Bowden drew the other end peg to end up with a similar catch for 7-5-0. Most anglers fished a groundbait feeder in conditions that saw the river carrying extra water for the third week running. Catches have improved with most angers on the 2 to 3lbs mark. The Mersey Fur & Feather Match is to be held on 8th December (strictly members only) book in with Cheshire Angling to ensure your place.

Derek Bibby put together a skimmer and roach catch to take the winners' purse at our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Grappenhall. Second placed Ron Durr's day started well as he took a bream of 2lbs on his first put in on the pole and added small roach to weigh 3-2-0.

Our bailiffs report that Worthington Lakes are producing plenty of quality roach and skimmers although carp anglers are noticeable by their absence. I spoke to a member last week who was suitably impressed by his brief session on Arley (the middle reservoir) when he vowed to make a return trip very soon.

Quite a few members have asked when we are carrying out our annual carp stocking program. The answer is that I do not have a date at present as this depends upon when the fish are netted and sorted from VS Fisheries stock ponds.  I will publish details when known so that members who wish to watch/help can turn up on the day.

There is a working party on the Mount at Buckley on Sunday 17th November meet 9am on car park if you are interested. Ask for Brian Jones or Derek Cowell.

Tuesday 5 November 2013

5th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th November 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Everything turned out perfect at our Mersey Series Match for organiser Ant Higham (aka King of the River) as he drew an end peg that as luck had it turned out to be the only one with some slack water in a flooded river. Ant put together an impressive catch of perch, skimmers, bream, and roach for 12lbs taken on groundbait feeder and maggot for an easy win. Unfortunately weights then plummeted as anglers struggled to hold bottom and even see bites but Mersey regular Roy Everson persevered to take second spot with 1-7-8.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match unsurprisingly saw weights down on the previous week following a heavy frost. There was almost a complete change in prize winners with the exception of Lenny (end peg) Dutton who was in the money again and crept up to second place with 2-9-12, however the clear winner was George Hollis who put together a net of skimmers and roach for 4-0-8. Lots of small fish were caught.

The Mount at Buckley is still producing good sport according to member Phil Hancock who caught a mixture of roach, perch, tench, and four carp on groundbait feeder and maggot. I would really appreciate some catch reports on Offa's Dyke Pools (Llanfynydd Road CH7 4LQ) which is only a ten minute drive from The Mount.

The second round of our pair's series was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge in strong winds and heavy rain. Kev Green played the waiting game to tempt two large perch and a roach of 1lb that also took a liking to his worm bait for a total weight of 5-3-4. Mike Savage was runner-up with 3-6-0 of small skimmers and roach. Mike and his partner Craig Lowndes are still the leading pair by just one point. Next match on the 16th November.

Ouch, one of our members reported a glitch in our map directions to Worthington Lakes so I would ask all members who have had any problems to any of our fisheries or found nearer location post codes to please let me know as we intend to produce an updated map book when current stocks are depleted. The fisheries as shown in your membership booklet are the definitive list.

I would really appreciate more catch reports which are invaluable to this column and fellow members. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. Tuesday 29 October 2013

29th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th October 2013 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

What a difference seven days and a flood of cold water made to our Mersey Series as weights plummeted with not a single angler breaking the 2lbs mark.  However it was a close match as winner Roy Everson put 1-14-9 of feeder caught small roach and perch on the scales just nudging out one of Cadisheads finest Pete Jones on 1-14-0. The top four anglers all drew in the forties where the flow was a lesser pace than those who drew in the fifties where something approaching a 60gm feeder was needed to hold bottom close to the near bank.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was back on the Bridgewater Canal this week and turned out to be a good move for despite the fact that in last week's column I predicted that there would be no massive weights they turned out far better than the Mersey results. Graham Belton won the match with a weight of 7-5-9 of roach and perch plus a bonus specimen perch. Alan Brown was runner up with a 5-9-12 all roach net.

The first round of our pairs series was fished on Saturday at the Scholar Green stretch of the Macclesfield Canal. There were plenty of bites to be had from mainly small fish but individual winner Bob Campbell still managed to put 7-9-8 of punch bread caught roach on the scales to win this inaugural match. Second placed Craig Lowndes was less than an ounce adrift with 7-8-14 that consisted of three large perch and a few silver fish although he no doubt cursed his bad luck as he lost two big perch that were coming to the net. Top pair was Mike Savage and Craig Lowndes.

Appleton Reservoir is still producing fair catches with Junior National Squad member Morgan Adawee being rewarded with a specimen roach of 2-3-0 along with a smaller fish that took a ledgered boilie intended to target the waters carp stocks. He also landed three carp. Pike angers have been out in force on the Mersey where one member reported a magnificent fish of 17-6-0 from the seventies peg area.
