30th October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

30th October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

George's Fishing Tackle in Wigan has acted as our membership outlet for a good number of years however George and his wife Dorothy have decided to retire so they can see more of their grandchildren and hopefully find more time to actually go fishing. So on behalf of all our members I wish them both a long and happy retirement and thank them for all they have done for Warrington Anglers Association. From immediate effect Coppull Anglers will take over the reins as our local outlet. Their address is 144, Spendmore Lane, Coppull, Nr. Chorley PR7 5BX Tel. 01257 794040.

I have a report from Paul Edwards who had a really good session on the River Ribble at our Hurst Green stretch on the weekend before last. On arrival at the bankside the river level was up between 4 and 5feet but undeterred he set up his two ledger rods but needed a 5oz lead to hold bottom. Using Sonu Baits spicy sausage on one rod and Source boilies on the other plus groundbait and halibut pellet in the feeder he sat down expecting little in the way of action. I am certain that he didn't mind in the least to be proven wrong as his catch of seven barbel shows, weighing in order 9-2-0, 7-8-0, 3-3-0, 6-5-0, 12-9-0, 12-14-0, and 10-5-0.

The River Mersey looked in perfect condition for our Sunday Series event, however all that glitters is not gold and Jimmy Byrnes needed only 3-5-0 to take the win. After his amazing long run Ross Wightman for once was not in second place for as I said in my last weeks column 'I have a feeling his luck may change,' well it certainly did, but for the worst when his runner up spot was taken Anthony Higham with 1-13-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's event certainly saw an improvement on last week and for most again a lot of small fish were caught which looks promising for the future. Jeff Clare made certain of a win with a last minute slab taken on pellet to add to his net of roach for 6-5-4.  Runner-up Jimmy Byrne was less than an ounce behind with 6-4-8.

Many thanks to those members who send me their catch reports, please keep them coming. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 8-30pm every Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

23rd October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The ink was barely dry on new member, Peter Sheridan's membership but he soon opened up his account on our Wide Hole Fishery with a superbly conditioned pike of 14lbs.The fish was taken on mackerel fillet and had bite marks from an even larger specimen. He also reported that two other anglers also caught half a dozen fish between them. So it seems to be where the pike action is at the moment.

Ackers Pit is still really fishing well but the colour is starting to drop out of the water which may change things in a week or so, however at present carp, roach, rudd, and tench are feeding well. Fish are coming to a variety of baits but punch bread, caster, or pellet are producing the best results.

The Mount at Buckley is another place to visit for a confidence booster at this time of the year with members still reporting good all round sport. Two members from Abergele reckoned that amongst their catches of carp, roach, and bream, they had some specimen perch to around 2.5lbs. All taken on feeder fished maggot and hair rigged corn.

Steve Featherstone bucked the pole or tip trend when he won these weeks Mersey Series with 7-8-0 of roach on maggot fished bolognaise style. I cannot believe this but second place yet again went to match organiser Ross Wightman with 6-5-0. I think he has lost count about how many times he has been in the runner up place; he said "If I had 50lbs someone else would have 51." Watch this space I have a feeling his luck may change.

Our popular Disabled & Over 60's event saw weights down on last week but the numbers of fish caught increased as the area was alive with small roach and skimmers. This made it a close event with less than half a pound separating the top four. Winner Ronnie Durr had a lot of fish for 3-10-10.  There were a good number of weights between 2 and 3lbs.

I would remind members that dogs are not allowed on any of our fisheries. One member chose to flout this rule on our stretch of the River Wye over the weekend and compounded this by refusing to show the riparian owner his membership booklet (rule 5).

The funeral of Jack Bellis takes place at 2-30pm Thursday 25th October at Christchurch, Padate and then at Walton Crematorium.

16th October 2012 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

18th October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

It is always sad to report the death of one of our elderly members but to report the loss of nineteen year old Jack Bellis, one of our bright young anglers is just heartbreaking. Jack passed away at the weekend as a result of a tragic motorcycle accident. He was a key member of our match squad and rose quickly through the ranks since joining our Minnows as a young boy. Jack will be greatly missed by all, especially by his peers and the younger anglers who looked up to him as a role model. Our condolences and deepest sympathy go to his family and friends.

Popular Woodshaw Reservoir is really on form and saw venue regular Alan Webber on a quick session to use up some cubed luncheon meat left over from an earlier match proceed to empty the place with a succession of quality roach, crucians, and bream. Alan fished the pole at 8metres. James Lewis reports a good catch of crucians and bream from the venue on his home-made spicy sausage paste fished close in on his top four pole sections. Sport is generally patchy on Fosters Pools but the tiny Carp Pool is providing good catches of small crucians and roach.

There is nothing to write home about at Grey Mist Mere where it is still very slow, likewise Sandiway lakes where the smaller 17acre water is out-fishing the somewhat daunting 53acre fishery; not too difficult as according to reports not much has been caught from the latter for the better part of last week. Still the fish are in these venues but that's fishing, however all will benefit from their regular stocking at year end.

Our Mersey series on Sunday saw the river heavily coloured and judging by the results out of sorts. Martin Griffiths needed only 3-12-0 to secure another win on the venue followed by our seemingly regular second placed member, match organiser Ross Wightman.

The following day saw our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal produce much better weights with winner Jeff Clare having a good net of skimmers and bream for 10-2-8. Graham Belton was kept busy throughout the match with 6-14-0 of small silver fish to take the runner-up spot. The venue switched on and fished really well with a fair number of 3 & 4lbs catches. Bread, caster, or squat accounted for most weights.

9th October 2012 Warringon Anglers Association Guardian Notes

9th October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

It is getting that time of the year as water clarity improves when pike anglers start to look for some serious action. Steve Daley enjoyed a spell on the Mersey this week and in a short two hour session had three fish, 11lbs, 11-10-0, and 14-6-0. All fell for wobbled herring. Garry Whitehead fished at Phoenix Park Lake and landed three jack-pike but lost four others in the weed.

Karl Nicholls visited Ackers Pit for the first time on Saturday and fishing the pole alternating between caster and maggot but feeding hemp and micro-pellet he literally emptied the place. He estimated that he had around 40lbs made up of carp, tench, a few skimmers, but loads of quality roach. He will definitely be back. On Monday I had a meeting at the pit but was continually distracted by an angler who every time I glanced over he was either playing a carp or landing a chunky roach. One bit of really good news on this popular venue is that the tench have bred successfully with lots of bars of soap showing up in catches.
Neil Plunkett enjoyed a session at The Mount with a catch of eight carp of which a couple were doubles, a tench, and his best bream of the season at over 5lbs. He visited Grey Mist Mere the following day but nobody was catching and he only managed one tench around the 5lbs mark.

The Canal and River Trust (ex-BWB) has removed thousands of bream and roach, along with pike, perch, etc from the dewatered section of the Trent & Mersey Canal caused by the massive breach. All the fish were transferred to the stretch adjacent to Black Prince boats near Acton Bridge.

A small amount of floating pennywort which is an invasive species has found its way into the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook from the Trent & Mersey Canal. Thankfully the Manchester Ship Canal Company is on the ball and is dealing with this dreadful stuff, I hope that the Canal and River Trust is likewise motivated on the T & M.

Following on from my request for members vigilance regarding thefts from boats committed in the Stockton Heath area a member rang the police with a report of someone acting suspiciously. I don't know the outcome but thanks to him for being on the ball.

2nd October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

2nd October 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Martin James snatched a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon at Ackers pit on the pretext of trying out his new pole. Despite a gloom and doom prediction by a fellow angler on the dire state of sport undeterred he started off with bread punch at 6metres that attracted only small roach. A change of method, cupping in finely chopped worm and half a dendrobena on the hook soon brought a change of fortune in the shape of clonking roach, mainly in the 6 – 8oz bracket, but with a few easily pushing a pound plus a handful of decent perch. Martin commented, "It was just like the Ackers of old".

It was chaos last week with problems on the Manchester Ship Canal caused by a 40ft tree that in the floods parked itself against a sluice gate jamming the mechanism. This had a knock on effect on the Mersey as a drain down was needed so a repair could be carried out. Thankfully in this respect all has now returned to normal. Not so the breach on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Dutton where a number of fish ended up in a flooded field. British Waterways Trust was quick to answer this emergency and contained the dewatered section to a short stretch. There is still water in the canal channel that still holds the majority of the fish and these along with those in the field should be rescued before the end of the week and transferred to the fully watered section near Black Price Boats at Acton Bridge. It looks like the breach repair will take a number of months.

Peter Bradford is happy with his catches from Rixton Claypits, on Thursday he had s 5lbs tench plus a 7.5lbs bream. A return to the venue on Monday produced six bream to 3lbs.

Pete Critchley was the top rod at our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday which was held on the Bridgewater Canal between Daresbury Labs and Keckwick Hill Bridge.  Pete fished pole and caster at 12metres for a 4-2-2 net of mainly roach plus tiny skimmers. The perennial Jimmy Byrne was runner up with 3-12-0 fishing a similar method. Mainly roach were caught by all anglers with several fish over the 1lb mark.

There have been thefts from boats committed in the Stockton Heath area so would anglers please ring the police immediately if they see anything suspicious.
