28th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Paul Edwards had a good afternoon session on our stretch of the River Ribble on Friday when after setting up two rods, one upstream and the other downstream it was the latter which took four barbel including two doubles of 10-8-0 and 12-5-0. He was using a feeder packed with halibut pellet groundbait with a hair-rigged 14mm pellet at the business end. The river was dropping but was still 4 or 5feet above normal level but this did not seem to put the fish off as he had a fish on his first cast. To quote Paul "without doubt this river is the best water on the WAA book....I just wish it was a bit closer to home."

There were some good catches in our WAA winter league Stu Hardman fishing for Black Claggers put together a winning mixed net for 9-8-6 closely followed by George Barber fishing for Assi with 9-6-2. In fact there were three weights over 9lbs which looks good on paper but when you consider Jimmy Byrne needed only 6oz to win his section on Moore Boats and Phil Cross on the Toast Rack only 1-2-4 for his section it shows the fish were tightly shoaled. The current overall league leader at present by 7points is Warrington Red, but it is definitely not a foregone conclusion.

George Barber was in the money again this week when he won our Disabled & Over 60's match with 6-14-14 taken on pole-fished maggot near Houghs Bridge. He was 2lbs clear of Pete Critchley who is getting consistent results with his pole-fished chopped worm technique. Pete caught roach and perch for 4-13-2.

Our Mersey Series was won by Eddie Frangleton who admittedly although he doesn't fish these matches too often he usually frames. He was in the money on this occasion with 6-6-12 consisting of a couple of bream and small roach taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot.

The Baileys Tackle Pike Match Series was switched to the Mersey on Sunday and although there were only three fish caught,  most important was the fact that they have now opened their score sheet on the river. Steve Mercer was a clear winner with just under 14lbs.

I would remind all members that salmon are not allowed to be taken until the 16th June and then only if that person holds a National Rod Licence Salmon Permit. Any person catching a salmon must return it immediately. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

I would welcome any catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm every Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

21st February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Match results are not too great this week when only a single pike was more than enough to win our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday. It was fished at Daresbury, a normally productive stretch of canal where winner Pete Critchley pole-fished worm hoping for anything that swam, his luck was in and he snared the small jack pike weighing 3-2-8 losing a bigger one at the net. Weights went rapidly downhill after that and veteran angler Alf Seddon came in second with just 9-8.

Our Mersey Series was won by Jimmy Byrne who included a bream of 5-10-0 adding a few roach for a total weight of 7-0-0. Jimmy fished a small groundbait feeder and maggot. Jimmy Gannon came second fishing the same method with a net of skimmers and roach for 3-10-7. Just for the record Jimmy framed in our Monday canal event with only 1.5ozs.

Members found a few fish feeding at Grey Mist Mere and seven carp came out on Saturday night with the best a 17 pounder. A number of anglers have got together and are purposely feeding quality high protein bait in order to increase growth rates. They are already reporting promising results as the carp are packing on weight. An added bonus will be some even bigger tench later in the year for those members who target this species. Sadly roach and rudd have suffered from heavy cormorant predation the past few years and as a consequence the resident pike are emaciated with their major food source eaten by this avian pest.

The Sainsbury's Active Kids scheme is back where you can collect vouchers for schools or clubs. Last year we exchanged those that you kindly gave us for various useful items such as first aid kits for use at our Junior matches and coaching events. Thank you in anticipation of your continued support this year. You can either drop them in our Sainsbury's Active Kids box at Cheshire Angling or when passing post them though our office door at 52, Parker Street, Warrington.

The 2012 memberships will be posted out to all members towards the end of the month whereupon they can be renewed at any of our tackle shop depots advertised on our website and club card, at HQ on a Friday evening, or by post to PO Box 71 Warrington WA1 1LR New members can join now by any of the above methods/places and in addition online by Paypal at www.warrington-anglers.org.uk

14th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

With an increasing number of our canals and Stillwater fisheries becoming free of ice anglers are starting to think about a fishing session. Our disabled & over 60's match organiser on Monday managed to find a section of the Bridgewater Canal at Moore large enough to accommodate the hardy regulars. The fish were as expected tightly shoaled but local rod Jimmy Byrne put a mixed net of roach and skimmers on the scales for just over 5lbs followed by Mike Daniels with 3-14-2. Both fished the pole alternating between bread and pinkie. OK some anglers really struggled and did not weigh but at least the match took place.

Our Honorary and over 65's match organiser Stan Charnock has retired after a good number of years successfully running these events. So publically on behalf of everyone a big thank you to him for what he has done that on occasions can seem a thankless task. Hopefully he will now be able to spend more time actually fishing. The good news is that Cheshire Anglings John Dagnall has stepped into the breach and volunteered to run the matches including the John Lavery Series alongside his events. The only change is that they will in future be held on a Monday, but anglers who qualify can fish two matches in one from the same peg if they so wish. Should be very interesting indeed.

The Mersey match on Sunday saw a slight improvement in sport, although nothing really to write home about but a first time win on the river for Peter Jones with 1-3-0 of roach caught on a maggot feeder. He was followed by Anthony Higham with 1-2-3 on the same method. I understand that a few small pike are showing at the Woolston end of the river behind Grey Mist.

New member Mark Davies was chomping at the bit to get out on our fisheries for a session but due to the freeze was forced into a river session on the Alyn. It was his first ever go at trotting a stick-float but his loose fed maggots soon attracted some interest and he caught 12 grayling to around 12oz, 4 feisty brown trout and a salmon parr. His three hour session proved to be a pleasant afternoon out and his first ever grayling to boot!

New members can join in person at any of our tackle shop licence depots as advertised on our website and club card. They can also join at our HQ, by post to PO Box 71 Warrington WA1 1LR, or online by Paypal at www.warrington-anglers.org.uk

7th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

7th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

After a brief attempt at a thaw the freeze has hit us again with a vengeance putting a firm lid of ice on all our stillwater fisheries, although there are a few free areas near bridges on the canals.

Our Warrington Anglers local Winter League was obviously cancelled on Saturday so it looked like a few more anglers may turn out for the Mersey match on Sunday, however only four members turned up. The extra snow melt water and salt run-off from the roads put paid to any angling action and nobody caught.

Despite this ten brave souls turned out the following day for the weekly Disabled & Over 60's match that had been switched from frozen Bridgewater to the Mersey. Only winner and Mersey virgin Pete Critchley managed to put anything on the scales, a plump roach just under 7.5ounces caught on a maggot feeder. They drew for the next two places and Lennie Dutton was first out of the hat followed by match organiser John Dagnall who aside from being pegged next to the winner was in the money for the first time in almost 12 months.

By contrast the River Dee is really on form with some cracking catches coming from Fardon of roach, dace, chub, and a few grayling approaching 2lbs. Our local bailiff reports that members are catching a few pike around 8 to 10lbs at Almere Ferry and according to our licence depot, Tackle Locker, a specimen of 21lbs has been caught on the river and an outstanding catch of 40 chub taken on bread fished bolognaise.

Bailiff Steve Kemble posted on the Mist Moneys Facebook site to muster up ten volunteers to a Grey Mist clean-up on Saturday. They also trimmed overhanging branches and even managed to clear a few pegs on our adjacent Mersey stretch where some quality carp have been reported during the year. Many thanks to all the volunteers but shame on those who left the rubbish in the first instance.

Just before the freeze-up new members Trevor Bradley and his mate Keith Radcliffe on their first trip to a WAA water decided on Woodshaw Reservoir for their debut. They were more than happy with their best ever catch of bream, crucians, and roach to 3/4lb.

New members can join in person at any of our tackle shop licence depots as advertised on our website and club card. They can also join at our HQ, by post to PO Box 71 Warrington WA1 1LR, or online by Paypal at www.warrington-anglers.org.uk

31st January 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st January 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

As regards our popular Disabled & Over 60's regular Monday event there's good news and bad news this week. First the bad news is that fishing is predictably rubbish at this moment in time but the good news is that although weights were low all catches were made up of hundreds of tiny roach which is promising for the future of the canal. It was fished this week either side of Moore Post Office and winner Pete Critchley pole-fished bread punch and squat for 2-11-4. Ron Durr on 1-15-4 was in runner-up spot with only ounces separating the other back-up weights.

A titbit of information for our pike anglers came from match organiser John Dagnall who told me that during the event pike were striking everywhere followed by explosions of small fish as they made their escape. He was informed by one of the narrow boat owners that he had witnessed the capture of a monster pike the day previous day only 4ozs short of 30lbs.

A few single figure pike were reported on my visit to Phoenix Park Lake on Tuesday despite a thin layer of ice at one end of the fishery. Work is stating soon on pathways and pegs where the majority of the willow has been extensively coppiced. William Scowy had a nice male fish of 13lbs from Budworth Mere on Saturday.

The Mersey match was a repeat of last week with anglers struggling for bites with winner Jimmy Byrne needing only 1-5-1 of tiny roach caught on a maggot feeder set-up.

I have helped to organise an Irish Tourist Board Sponsored Supper Night on Thursday 9th February at the Grappenhall Ex-Servicemen's Club, Chester Road, Grappenhall, WA4 2QG. If you are considering an Irish angling holiday this is your opportunity to meet and chat with leading representatives of Irelands angling travel trade, hoteliers, pub owners, B&B's, and self catering houses.

Looks to be a good night with a free supper thrown in for good measure so why not come along and enjoy the craic and you might even win a holiday for two with a complimentary draw ticket. It's got to be worth a punt! Pre-book to ensure your supper table seat ring Dave Houghton on 0151 324 4744 or email dave@activeirishbreaks.com.

And for match fishermen there are four angling open matches at normal entry fees at local day-ticket fisheries.  The winner each day wins an angling holiday for two worth £500.

Please contact the fishery direct for time etc.
