27th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

27th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Whilst most anglers this past weekend  have been lounging around the house generally feeling stuffed overloaded to the gills with Christmas cheer some members have been out on our fisheries shaking off those cobwebs; nothing better than a day's fishing to clear the head!

Ian Gill headed for the Mount at Buckley after hearing about our recent heavy stocking with carp up to 18lbs and was rewarded with some hectic sport. He fed pellet and fished home-made paste over the top to catch fourteen carp, all small mirrors between 1.5lbs and 8lbs. With the mild spell these fish are still feeding well so this venue is well worth a visit if you fancy some unseasonal action.

Regular contributor to this column Steve Daley has been out and about over this past week on his favourite venue, the Bridgewater Canal and was well rewarded with some cracking pike action. On Thursday he had his best fish that weighed in at 19-7-0 to add to his collection of upper doubles caught from the venue during 2011. On Christmas Day morning during a short session he had one of 12lbs with Boxing Day producing a real bonanza of seventeen pike ranging from small jacks to a fish of 13-6-0. OK, nothing of specimen size but hectic action to say the least. He took all the fish on float-fished smelt or mackerel doctored up with a slug of a secret attractant.

Last chance to fish our 'Mystery Pairs Match' on Monday 2nd January 2012, members must book on to fish either the Mersey or the Bridgewater Canal with Helen Dagnall at Cheshire Angling 01925 635486. Tickets are £10 all in. Your mystery partner will be drawn after the event back at the Star Inn.

I would welcome any catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.

Happy New Year to all our members and to those who are not but still read this column.

20th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

If you thought that sport around our waters was poor last week well I can tell you this week it's even worse. For the first time this season our regular Sunday series on the Mersey was cancelled due to unfishable and dangerous conditions. Even so a few hardy anglers turned up despite the weather.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match held on the normally productive pegs at Statham was hard going to say the least; however it produced a new face in the prizes, Mike Daniels, who only needed 1-12-0 to almost double the weight of runner up George Barber on 14-0. Match organiser John Dagnall had his worst weight of the year with 1.5ounces, and he fared better than some anglers! There will be a 'Christmas Holiday' break in this series with the first match being drawn at the Star Inn, Statham at 10am Monday 9th January 2012.

Mersey match organiser Bob Campbell has laid on his usual annual Boxing Day Special to give a welcome release to those members who after watching the same television repeats and stuffed to the gills with turkey and mince pies just need a quick fishing fix. Well, if the weather improves according to forecast this could be for you. Draw 9am Victoria Park.

Don't forget if you fancy fishing our 'Mystery Pairs Match' on Monday 2nd January 2012, anglers can book on to fish either the Mersey or the Bridgewater Canal with Helen Dagnall at Cheshire Angling 01925 635486. Tickets £10 all in. Your mystery partner will be drawn after the event back at the Star Inn. To date I believe there are just short of thirty anglers booked on the list so it should be an interesting event.

Sincere good wishes for the festive season and a very Merry Christmas with a special thank you to all who have kindly supplied me with their catch reports throughout the year.

13th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Sport has been quiet around our waters this past week with only a few anglers venturing out onto the bank side. I must admit having committed myself to fishing the popular Mersey Fur & Feather event on Sunday with fellow committee member Dean Barlow I wasn't too keen and definitely had some doubts about my sanity when I looked out of my bedroom window and saw the wet weather. I think perhaps many others anglers were in the same frame of mind especially when they arrived on the bank in the pouring rain and saw our local river carrying a fair amount of extra flood water. The match turned out to be a real grueller with some anglers not even seeing the hint of a bite but winner Neil Davies made no mistake when he converted his few bites into two bream for a winning weight of 5-6-0 followed by Bob Campbell with 3-1-0. Both fished the tip and groundbait feeder with worm and maggot.

There were plenty of prizes for everyone, turkeys, hams, pork, and the usual booze, biscuits and chocolates, even yours truly managed a nice shoulder of lamb plus £30 and the icing on the cake a £1 bet taken from my mate Dean. Many thanks to the Star Inn who as usual extended a warm welcome and put on a cracking chicken curry at the presentation that really went down very well with all the anglers. Anthony Higham even took some tit-bits home for his beloved in a napkin! All in all despite the poor fishing the event was the usual success thanks to Dot and Helen Dagnall who have been collecting the prizes for the past few months.

The Disabled & Over 60's match didn't fish much better the following day and saw regular Trevor Bainbridge a clear winner with a mixed net of 5-6-0 taken on bread punch and pinkie. Bud Leigh was runner-up with 2-10-0.

6th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th December 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

In the immortal words of Victor Meldrew, 'I don't believe it' following our long overdue stocking last week of the Mount at Buckley with just over 300 carp it is now apparently 'a pastie water' and ruined as a fishery. This is according to comments made on an internet forum.  I checked through almost two years of my emails relating to the Mount and I had received only one report of someone actually catching a carp but numerous on the need to stock them following fishless visits. The committee have always intended this to be a prolific water and following our original extensive and expensive works only a few anglers have graced its banks with the car park becoming overgrown through lack of use. The Mount has been intentionally heavily stocked to encourage all members to use the fishery, but we are aware in doing so it will not please a few. The situation will obviously be closely monitored.

Around our waters only a few anglers have ventured out on the banks following the sudden change in the weather so reports have been thin on the ground this past week.

Only ten anglers turned out for our regular Mersey Series on Sunday that again saw the tip triumph as the winning method. Jeff Shaw put  9-11-0 of bream and roach on the scales for a decisive win.

The Disabled & Over 60's held their annual Fur & Feather prize match on Monday and although weights were down this did not dampen the spirits in this popular event in which everyone receives a prize. Eventual winner Alan Brown had 3-5-8 taken on pole and punched bread. Thanks to match organiser John Dagnall who takes some good natured stick for his troubles in running this popular series and to Cheshire Angling for sourcing the prizes.

Sunday saw Helen Dagnall guesting for Black Claggers take a second individual win in Warrington Anglers Local Winter League held on the Trent & Mersey at Broken Cross. She had a cracking net of roach and a decent perch taken on caster and worm to finish a pound clear of runner up Neil Davies with 7-5-4. Neil included a perch of 2.5lbs in his 6-5-4 net. Warrington Red took the team honours making them now 6 points overall clear of Black Claggers, closely followed by Cheshire Gold.
