The past seven days have been hectic with fish being stocked in the Mount at Buckley which received 150 mirror carp, Appleton Reservoir 80, and 150 smaller fish went in High Legh Fisheries to replace the total fish kill that occurred during last year's long freeze-up. All the fish were purchased from Winsford Anglers netted from The Ocean where they were thinning stocks. They included some stunning looking fish ranging in weight from 1.25lbs to 15lbs. Many thanks to Neil Boaz and his team and the Winsford volunteers.

Our netting team were in action on Monday when at the request of the Christleton Parish Council they finally netted Christleton Pit after being thwarted by a pair of protective swans earlier in the year. The wait was worthwhile as the water was lower making it easier to reach all the fish. We took out 180 carp averaging 8lbs with fish up to 18lbs plus comprising of 10 mirrors with the remainder being commons which joined the fish stocked earlier at The Mount. This underused water in now back in business with a vengeance the rest is now down to our members.

With more netting operations planned we should have a good supply of roach, gudgeon, and perch that will be destined to supplement stocks on our waters where needed. Netting volunteers are always being sought, so if you are interested please give me a ring.

The Pike Anglers Club teach-in event held on the Bridgewater Canal on Sunday had a lower attendance which was possibly due to me omitting it from my Guardian column; however it was advertised on our website and on posters in tackle shops. Certainly those who attended reaped the rewards of individual attention and more in depth tuition by the PAC experts.

The Mersey Series saw a drop in back-up weights making Anthony Higham a clear winner with 6-4-5 of feeder fished roach and bream taken on feeder tactics using worm and maggot. In fact from an all pole match the previous week on this occasion it reversed to all feeder.

Our Disabled and over 60's match pegged either side of Moore Bridge saw veteran member George Barber put a mixed net on the scales for 4-1-8 to take the top spot. Pole fished liquidised/punched bread and caster was the winning method which was also used by runner-up Colin Hall on 3-9-4.

Steve Daley loves his winter pike fishing, especially on the Bridgewater Canal where he has had some notable catches. This week he had fish of 6lbs, 11lbs, topped by a magnificent specimen just under 20lbs.

The most consistent match weights this week came from our Mersey Series where for a change all the top four weights came to pole and maggot tactics with roach making up the bulk of catches. Jeff Shaw put 9-5-0 on the scales for a clear win almost 2lbs clear of runner-up Martin Lenihan on 7-8-9.  

Fairly decent  results came from our Local Winter League held on the Macclesfield Canal where local tackle dealer and Ladies England International Helen Dagnall took the individual honours with 6-9-12 just 3 ounces ahead of runner-up Phil Cross. It is early days yet but to date no team is exactly in a commanding lead which makes for a more interesting league.

Tony Selby wasn't watching the match on Saturday but he was keenly watching his float when he fished our stretch of the Bridgewater Canal behind the famous Old Trafford ground. Using frozen sprats he had four pike 9-8-0, 14-6-0, 14-9-0, and 17-12-0. This area is renowned for quality pike fishing and has produced fish topping the thirty pound mark.

John Hughes fished the tiny River Alyn and had a really good days sport with chub and grayling using a light stick float and loose-fed maggots. He travelled light and moved downstream a few times to other pools once bites began to dwindle. He had a real tussle with a hard fighting fish on the bend near Ithell's Bridge and did well to land a small salmon of around 5lbs on his light tackle.

A few members have made their feelings known on our website forum about the state of the track to the Dee at Worthenbury which is susceptible to annual flood damage. The situation is that there are a number of users of the track, some with heavy machinery, and it becomes further complicated as we only rent the fishing rights. The track has been repaired in the past but it was soon damaged.

There have been some good pike caught this past week from our river fisheries, Ian Smitheram had four fish from the River Severn at Montford Bridge taken on smelt. They weighed in at 7-12-0, 10-4-0, 10-10-0, and 14-8-0. On the Dee Ned Owen fished the river at Caldecott Hall and was rewarded with a superb fish of 19lbs which more than made up for the long walk. Closer to home the River Mersey I am informed produced a brace of 20lbs fish and regular column contributor Steve Daley fishing as I am typing away on my keyboard has already banked fish of 11-7-0 and 12-07-0.

The colour has really dropped out of many of our waters, especially the Bridgewater Canal where fish are now tightly shoaled. Pete Critchley found a few fish on our regular Disabled & Over 60's match putting 4-11-12 of silver fish on the scales for a comfortable win taken on punched bread and caster.

Following the phenomenal weights of last week's Mersey Series when the match record went twice in the same event Anthony Higham needed only 9-7-0 on Sunday to take first place. His catch included one decent sized bream plus roach taken on a maggot feeder. Just to prove that all methods can make the frame Arthur Plumb fished the bolognaise method and was kept busy with small roach for his second placed 7-10-0. Match organiser Bob Campbell came in at fourth also with an all roach net taken on pole and maggot.

James Roberts fished the Trent and Mersey Canal at Whatcroft and bagged up with roach and skimmers on pole fished punch bread having a bite every put in. He used just twelve slices of liquidised bread which included two for the hook for a good 12 to 15lbs.

Last winter's fish kill at High Legh Pools during the mini-ice age was followed by massive cormorant damage that only added to the woes of this popular little fishery, so bad that I don't know of  anybody has caught a single fish on their visits.  We are hoping to re-stock in the next week or so with carp too big to make a meal for these feathered pests. Unless the Government come up with a control solution soon many more fisheries throughout the country will go the same way. It will be a travesty to see the diversity of native fish stocks so reduced because of a displaced and out of control avian pest.

The Mersey has hit the headlines again for all the right reasons, indeed as I reported in last week's column the 'fish are back', and they certainly are with a vengeance as the match record of 26-7-14 held by Roy Everson and barely two months old was smashed out of site, not once but twice on Sunday. Bob Clough who had already won our Trent & Mersey Canal winter league match on the previous day made it a double winning our River Mersey series with a staggering 48-9-0 of bream and roach on feeder fished worm and caster. Neil Davies after winning the previous two matches on the river was hoping for the treble, but his 33-7-0 net of bream and roach despite beating Roy Everson's match record was only good enough for runner-up spot. Needless to say I am expecting a rush on tickets for this year's Mersey Fur & Feather.

Steve Daley had a good early morning pike session on the Bridgewater Canal at Lymm on Sunday, when fishing smelt on one rod and mackerel on the other he had fish of 10-12-0, 17-11-0, 18-2-0, and a kamikaze perch of 2-0-0 that ran the gauntlet and gorged down the smelt despite the presence of large pike in the swim. He also had two dropped runs on the mackerel rod. I have heard strong rumours that a 30lbs plus pike was caught this week from the Mersey at Woolston, I am not in the least surprised as the river has turned up some quality fish in recent times.

Paul Edwards fished the Dee at Almere where targeting barbel he had fish of 7-2-0, 4-4-0, and 9-2-0 plus chub of 2-4-0, 3-7-0, 3-10-0, and 4-5-0. Successful methods used were an upstream rod, groundbait feeder with softened halibut pellets and a 14mm pellet on the hair, plus a downstream rod, maggot feeder running on 10lb line with red maggots on the hook.

On Monday evening the committee banned three members from Warrington Anglers Association for breaking club rules at Grey Mist Mere. Following a tip-off by a member they were caught consuming alcohol and in addition having non-members and a dog on site. I would remind members that in the interests of safety and fish welfare alcohol and drugs are not allowed on any of our fisheries.

At the end of July new member Isaac Gibson aged 10 years decided on Ackers Pit for his first visit to one of our waters and caught a PB carp of 5lbs. Last Friday accompanied by a family friend, Keith Green he surpassed this with a new PB mirror of 14-13-0 caught from Grey Mist Mere. It was one of the older fish but I am reliably informed that several of the newly stocked VS Fisheries fish have also been caught during the week.

Bailiff Mike Burdock visited his favourite WAA fishery, Wide Hole during the week for a short piking session. In an hour and a half he had fish of 7bs, 14lbs, topped by one of 16-8-0 all taken on herring baits.

Following the low weights of last week's dismal Mersey match you would swear by the results this Sunday that they fished a different river.  Winner Neil Davies made it two wins in a row and put a superb net of pole fished roach and dace on the scales for 16-6-0, all taken on maggot. Second placed Paul Harding fished the tip for an all roach catch of 7lbs.  The comment made seven days ago by match organiser Bob Campbell 'where's our fish gone?' was rapidly amended this week with a simple three word message, 'FISH ARE BACK!'Let's hope it remains so for the remainder of the series.

The Disabled and over 60's regulars are happy to be back at their spiritual home the Star Inn, Stage Lane, Statham for their draws, please note new draw time of 10am. Weights are a bit down on last week and George Barber fishing the pole alternated between bread and caster for 3-7-0 of small roach and perch to take the bulk of the pools money. The ongoing fortunes of our intrepid match organiser saw him win some coin with fourth place. Apologies to Geoff Brooks as my standing behind him catching up on old times probably cost him at least one place as distracted by me he missed countless bites.

The Baileys Tackle Pike Series got underway at Grey Mist Mere on Sunday and winner Phil Higgins needed only one fish caught early in the match for 7-4-0. Phil sweated it out for the best part of three hours after hearing that second placed Jez Caruthers had weighed in two fish. Flat calm and the unpredicted bright conditions ruined sport but everyone appreciated that this inaugural event was the start of something really good for the future of North West angling.

Such is the interest in pike fishing that it is important anglers learn to handle these fish correctly using the right equipment, so back with popular demand is another Pike Anglers Club run teach-in to be held on the Bridgewater Canal on the 27^th November. Come along and enjoy demonstrations put on by the experts. Make a note of the date, all welcome. More details to follow.
