26th July 2011 Warrington Guardian Notes

26th July 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Member Steve Hammond reports not catching any of the allegedly fabled barbel from our stretch of the River Dane but he did have some decent chub which caused him a few heart stopping moments in the overhanging branches. Four splendid specimens from such a tiny river are not too bad at all in just a two hour session.

The Dee is fishing really well with Graham Mannion having a good session last weekend with a dace or small chub every cast. It took him a while to get them going on caster but eventually they were literally crawling up the rod. Graham managed to get his car down to the parking at Caldecott Hall and was not surprisingly the only angler on the bank. He fished a stick float rig and included four grayling of 1.5lbs in his catch.

A late report from the River Dee at Almere Farm of an 8-11-0 barbel caught last week by young Wrexham member Richard Jones and witnessed and photographed by our bailiff Mike Lewis. Richard was well tooled up for the job using a John Wilson Avon rod with 10lb Berkley big game line straight through to a size 8 Drennan specimen hook. No hair rig or feeder, just a simple running 3 oz lead with 2 ft leader ending with a large piece of luncheon meat on the hook. He was fishing on the first under the trees after the Alyn mouth and gravel bed and hooked into his fish on his first cast.

Our Senior Bridgewater Canal 250th Celebration Open match at Manchester was won by local rod Tommy Nichols from Winterbottom AC who fished large bread punch at 11.5metres to net four bream for 10-13-0. Medals were donated by the Manchester Canal Company.

Jeff Shaw made it three in a row when he won our Sunday Mersey match with a mixed net which included a bonus bream of 5lbs for 12-1-0. Jeff fished pole and caster whereas second placed Steve Featherstone put 8-9-0 on the scales using waggler and loose fed maggot. Third with a pole catch of 7-12-0 was young angler Ross Whiteman who is well acquainted these days of being in the prize money.

Anglers please note that Warrington Rowing Club is holding their regatta on Saturday when they will be using the length from Kingsway Bridge to the suspension bridge, or what was previously the Old Quay Tavern.

Please keep sending me your catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for 2011 subscriptions, new memberships, and any queries.

19th July 2011 Warrington Anglers Gurdian Notes

19th July 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Rixton Claypits are producing some good mixed catches of tench, roach, and skimmers on both pole and running line. George Hatton reckons that he had a good thirty pounds in his session just fishing pole and maggot at 10 metres.

Grey Mist Mere is still producing quality tench to 9lbs and a number of upper double carp have been reported with the new stock packing on weight. Reports of catches of top quality roach with as many as forty or so in a session, and just when we thought the cormorants had decimated the stocks.

Leslie Hughes reports last weekend catching good sized tench, bream, plus lots of skimmers in the 12oz to 1.5lbs range. Sadly the horrendous weather closed in and cut short his session. Ian Callender also reports a good session spent under his brolly landing tench to 6-4-0, crucians, bream, and four carp with the best weighing in at 18-7-0. He alternated between homemade paste and mini-boilies tucking them in his method feeder mix.

We have been getting third hand reports of some decent barbel being caught from the bottom end of our stretch of the River Dane at Holmes Chapel; can anyone please come up with some evidence? For the record the recent downpours have improved sport with chub and grayling being caught on a variety of methods and baits.

The popular Woodshaw Series run by our local bailiff team was a close run affair this week with only 7ozs separating the first four youngsters. It should also be remembered that the results of all our junior mid-week matches are impressive considering that they only fish two and a half hours or so.

Litter is rearing its ugly head again at Sandiway Lakes where according to bailiffs these so called anglers have actually placed their rubbish into bags,  then the ' hard work' done  they find it too much of a burden to take it home. The volume and content is obviously from multiple overnight stays so the only remedy which unfortunately also affects our decent members is to close the fishery to night fishing. The choice is simply yours, clean up your act or the committee will. The situation is being monitored and rest assured anyone caught leaving litter of any description will lose automatically their licence.

12th July 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Mark Howard had a good early morning tench session last Saturday on Grey Mist Mere where after starting at first light he managed to land ten of the olive green beauties ranging from 3 to 5.5lbs. Quiver tipping double red maggot his first fish that he hoped was the daddy of all tench turned out to be a carp which eventually he lost in the weed.

Around our river fisheries the Severn at Loton Park is producing a few barbel around the 7 to 8lbs mark but so far the larger fish have not shown. The Dee is fishing well for small chub, dace, and grayling with the odd barbel being caught from near the confluence with the Alyn. Locally the low water conditions do not seem to have slowed sport on the Mersey as the match weights which are a good indicator improved this week after a slow start when good nets of dace roach and perch were taken mainly on the pole using caster or maggot.

Phoenix Park Lake is worth a visit where our bailiff informs me that good roach around the 1lb mark, tench to 4lbs, and skimmer bream are being caught. Double maggot or caster is sorting out the better stamp roach along with some decent rudd to 12oz. Carp are showing but it's difficult to tempt the better specimens out of the heavy weed beds. At the Barge Pub end quality crucians are turning up in catches, being taken close in alongside the marginal weed growth.

Ian Mather reports a good mixed session on Rixton Claypits where he estimates he had well over 50lbs of tench taken alternating between corn and soft pellet. Fishing a small waggler he introduced his offerings in small balls of soft groundbait rolled in micro-pellets. He also had plenty of skimmers and a few decent roach for this water.

Well done to our junior team who fished in the first Greater Manchester County Angling Development Group organised contest held last weekend at Bradshaw Hall. Our youngsters took four sections and two section seconds to win the event.

National Fishing month starts Friday and there is a Junior & Intermediate Open Match being organised by Cheshire County Development Group at Border Fisheries ring Martin James on 07768863067 to book on.

5th July 2011 Warrington Guardian Notes

5th July 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Congratulations to new member Andy Bentley who didn't waste any time making his mark in his new club by winning our June catch of the month competition with a superb 13-6-0 Wye barbel caught from our stretch at Hay on Wye. He was up against stiff competition such as a cracking 12lbs bream caught by John Green from Moore Quarry.

Sport at the Mount at Buckley has vastly improved with local angler Daz Jones having some good results with tench, he had fourteen in a short session last weekend using meat and corn. Brian Jones reports crucians to 1.5lbs and plenty of roach around the 1lb mark with a few 2lbs fish coming out to bread or corn from the middle pool, put maggot on the hook for perch every cast. Not a great deal of carp action at present.

Our Wigan fisheries are proving popular with members as bailiffs report good catches of crucians with 'up in the water' tactics accounting for some good catches from Woodshaw Reservoir. Forsters Pools complex are giving good sport, at Mowpin carp to 8lbs, crucians, rudd, and chub, the Carp Pool plenty of small crucians, rudd, roach, and occasional tench, at D & C decent carp to upper doubles being caught and lots of silver fish. Worthington Lakes are not on top form with carp anglers picking up odd fish, daytime anglers are catching bream roach and perch.

I have been reliably informed that a definite new additional 'forty' along with a thirty eight pounder have been recently caught form the big lake at Sandiway. Why do these anglers think they can keep such catches a secret, so let's see some photos, it's your water if you don't wish to help in firming up future stocking policy and establishing growth rates I think it is particularly sad. Also we seem to have a few members who think it is acceptable to dump their bagged up rubbish near the outer barrier.... take it home or leave our club. The small lake is fishing really well with good catches of carp and tench reported.

Saturday 25th June saw the first official match to be held at Ackers Pit since the re-opening of the water in 2009. The annual Howleston Cup junior match switched venue from the traditional Grey Mist Mere, everyone caught fish during the 3 hour match, and a variety of species were caught including roach, rudd, perch, tench, mirror carp and crucian carp. The match winner was Ryan Brown, who included all the above species in a mixed bag for 7-4-0 switching between waggler and pole-fished maggots.

Well done to our Cadet, Junior, and Intermediate teams who fished in the Angling Trust National Championships last weekend. Our young Cadet team got amongst the medals coming away with a bronze, the Intermediate team came fifth beating some really good teams, and our juniors who are a young team gained invaluable experience which will stand them in good stead for future events.

Best of luck to our WAA Blue team who are fishing the Van Den Eynde Supercup final on Sunday at Tunnel Barn Fishery. I know that manager Jeff Stoll and the team have put in some serious practice.
