26th April, 2011 Warrington Guardian Notes

26th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Bridgewater Canal bream are still in a feeding frenzy as they stock up on nutrients prior to spawning which could be earlier this year due to the warmer weather. Ross Whiteman with his son Jack fished pole and caster taking bream to 5lbs and shared a twenty three fish catch. It is always a mystery but generally these fish just vanish after spawning to be replaced in catches by smaller skimmers.

Robert Barton made a return visit to Wide Hole after a somewhat lengthy gap of thirty years and was really impressed with the improvement in sport being kept busy with bream ranging from 1 to 3lbs. The successful method was waggler and corn but a change of bait to luncheon meat saw his float slide under yet again but this time it was definitely not a bream. After a tackle testing fight a mirror carp of 17-2-0 lay in his landing net.

New member Carl Wadsworth had his best ever tench taken on his first ever visit to a Warrington Anglers fishery. Legered pop-up corn tempted the specimen, although he was so overawed by its sheer size that he forgot to weigh it! Not so junior member Miss Jez Lloyd who tempted her tench which weighed in at 6-9-0 on hair-rigged fake corn. A few carp being caught but tench sport is really on fire.

Worthington Lakes are producing a few carp but it is the roach and bream that are proving the best sport. Small groundbait feeder and red maggot seems to be the best method. Don't forget Adlington (the smallest) Reservoir is closed to fishing until the 16th June.

Woodshaw Reservoir is definitely worth a visit according to our bailiff Trevor Gray as tench to 4lbs, crucians, and bream are devouring any bait presented to them. Even so I understand that pellets just have the edge.

Bailiff Mike Monks reports that carp to 3lbs and silver fish are being caught on most baits at Ackers Pit although he has asked me to mention that floating baits are not the most sensible bait to use with so many wildfowl present on the water and also that only barbless hooks may be used.

Our popular Pike Anglers Club teach-in event takes place on Sunday 8th May 2011 between 10am and 2pm at Grey Mist Mere. There is no charge and it is open to non-members.

19th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

On Saturday I managed to get hold of Stephen Robinson, the captor of the now famous Grey Mist 10-5-0 eel and get the full story. This fish of a lifetime has really set the eel world alight as it is one of only a handful of doubles ever reported and only 12ounces off the record. This leviathan was caught at 2-20am, not as reported in my previous column on double red maggot during a daytime session, and was actually tempted by a fish-meal boilie fished hard on the bottom. The eel put up a mega fight, and getting it into the landing net proved even more difficult, but eventually it was weighed and witnessed.  It was not photographed because as this was Stephens first ever eel he just did not realise its significance and was definitely overawed by the sheer size and power of this fish of a lifetime.

Just for the record Richard Munns, the angler witnessing the capture also had an eel of around 6lbs the same week on the exact same bait plus a number of tench which also have a liking for these potent 'secret boilies'. Only a few carp showing but pleasingly a mixture of both older and new fish. One angler had eighteen tench on feeder and double maggot in a morning session.

Sandiway small lake is still giving good sport with members Richard Pierce and Wictor Fieutec sharing a catch of sixteen tench to 6.5lbs, two bream around the same weight, and three mirrors with two biggest weighing in at 22-5-0 and 22-10-0.

Our stretch of the Trent & Mersey Canal at Broken Cross really came on form for the Spring League with the first three anglers having double figure nets of plump roach. Match veteran Jimmy Byrnes put 14-4-0 of punch bread fish on the scales to take the winner's purse; following almost 3lbs adrift was Jeff Shaw with 11-10-0. With sport like this on tap it makes our membership prices look an absolute bargain.

12th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our catch of the Month prize winner for March was a unanimous decision in favour of Gordon Ashton with a 13-8-0 barbel from the River Dee caught in the last weeks of the season. Gordon wins over £100 of BaitTech products plus a Korda carp care kit.

Runner-up Mike Savages carp entry was completely overshadowed by the massive barbel but nevertheless what was special about his fish was that it came from the Bridgewater Canal. I know that since then he has had others which dispels the myth that 'they are all dead' when in fact they are very much alive and thriving. Mike gets a Korda carp care kit as a consolation.

Gary Bristow had a 23lb linear from Sandiway small lake along with four tench and two bream. The carp was the intended target and took a 20mm squid and octopus boilie fished at 100yds over a bed of chopped boilies and a small amount of hemp. According to Gary the stunning looking fish punched well above its weight and fought more like a thirty. Bream and tench are starting to feed of the large lake and there is an unconfirmed report of a 29lbs fish.

A massive eel weighing in at a massive 10-5-0 has been caught at Grey Mist Mere this past week. The fish of a lifetime took double red maggot during a daytime session and was witnessed, weighed and photographed before being safely released. Please would the member contact me? Also I understand another of the old carp has been caught at 28lbs and tench are starting to feed more freely.

A welcome report from Ian Thompson who had a hectic session on Hamptons Pool which although this tiny fishery is stuffed with a mixed bag of fish, including a few carp, it is rarely used. He fished hard against the fallen branch of a 'fir tree' which obviously gave lots of cover catching a steady succession of roach, rudd, and a few crucians. The highlight of his visit was landing a common carp of 14lbs having lost one earlier on light tackle and single maggot.

Our volunteers continued with the ongoing bank side stabilisation and aquatic improvement works at Ackers Pit over the weekend. We christened our 'new' Ford Ranger having the back full of muddy wet marginal plants along with full trailer load which were duly planted. Good news is that although the recently stocked carp are getting more wary they are still being caught along with some decent roach. Better still is that the team have spotted lots of small tench and crucians in both the marginal weed and when removing some of the thick algal growth.

Coming soon on Sunday 8th May 2011our popular Pike Anglers Club teach-in event where anyone can attend and learn both the basics and finer points of pike fishing. Eric Edwards will be doing a lure demonstration and others showing tackle, pike handling, etc. It's free and takes place this year between 10am and 2pm at Grey Mist Mere. More details nearer the time.

5th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The famous Cicily Mill Pool common made an appearance on Tuesday to junior member Andrew Lamb aged 14years. The fish was witnessed by his uncle Jeff Mowbray who has also caught this fish on two previous occasions. This thirty has reportedly died on a number of occasions only to reappear is the original 'come-back kid' and although down a bit on weight was in magnificent condition. Congratulations Andrew.

Paul Floyd had a two night session on Rixton Claypits last week and caught his personal best roach at 1-6-0. The fish fell to single red maggot presented on a size 18 hook. Paul also had tench and bream, the latter were like peas in a pod and ranged from 4-8-0 to 5-4-0 and fell to 8mm red halibut pellets. He followed this up with a trip to Grey Mist Mere and had four tench, best 6-7-0.  A report that one of our junior members caught Mist veteran 'Hector' at 27lbs over the weekend is promising.

Carp are starting to show at Phoenix Park Lake with a few reported caught over this past weekend. However it is the bream that are on the feed according to bailiff's reports as one angler had fifteen in a day session on Saturday. The fish fell to boilies and pva bags of pellets. A few tench averaging 4lbs but good roach sport to maggot at 4 to 5metres.

Congratulations to Honorary Member, Harry Yates who won the first prize of £200 in our stocking fund draw, however he promptly donated it back to be used for junior angling. An octogenarian Harry recognises the vital importance of attracting more youngsters to the sport that he has enjoyed as a WAA member. He has held a membership since the age of four.

The final match of our Warrington Local Winter League was won by Neil Buist in impressive style with 16-13-0 of bream on bread punch. However his arch rival Jimmy Byrne sabotaged a double win taking the overall championship with 44 points against his 42. Warrington Red triumphed in the team championship both on the day and overall with 149 points against Cheshire Anglings 137.  Thanks to Ivan & Corrine mine hosts at the Star, Statham for putting up with us and kindly providing the buffet.

The larger pool at High Legh Fisheries has been hit by a plague of cormorants which have reportedly almost wiped out the fish stocks. With the help of members we are currently assessing the situation on this popular fishery. I hope that the Environment Minister, the Rt. Hon. Richard Benyon addresses this problem sooner than later because these birds now feed on inland water throughout the year and once they home in on a fishery have a devastating effect on native fish populations. Currently the only viable solution is to stock with carp of a size too large for them to swallow.

Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.
