29th June 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Sport on most waters is slow due to the hot weather and clear water conditions with the exception of our rivers which have provided anglers with a few rod benders. The tiny River Dane is producing chub with Danny Bellfield landing six in a short session between 3 & 4lbs. The river is low so early morning or evening visits are producing the best results.

Barbel are showing up in numbers on the River Dee at Almere Ferry along with chub and quality dace. Ian Williams was catching dace on stick float and caster at Worthenbury when sport was interrupted by three small barbel around 3lbs each taken on consecutive casts and tested his light tackle to the limit.

Locally the River Mersey is really fishing well for roach, dace, skimmers, and chub, certainly the mega-stocking last March by the Environment Agency with 30,000 dace and 10,000 roach has had a positive impact on the upturn in sport. Normally the most successful method was without doubt the quiver tip and small feeder, not so this season as both the pole or stick float have taken over and have been responsible for 95% of match wins. This week being no exception with regular Lennie Dutton putting a pole fished winning net of 7-9-0 on the scales. For good measure he also took 4th place on the Bridgewater Canal the following day.

Whilst this week our England Football Team suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat against Germany at least one England Team were successful as our lads quietly brought home gold from the Mens World Championships held at Merida.  With 40 points they had just 2.5 in hand against silver medallists Italy on 42.5 points. Holland took the bronze with 51 points. Thanks must go to sponsors Drennan and congratulations to Team England.

Best of luck to our Cadet, Junior, and Intermediate teams as they compete on Saturday in the Angling Trust National Championships held on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Derby.

22nd June 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Nick Evans had a red letter day at Cicely Mill at the weekend when he hooked and landed the `big common.' his catch was weighed and witnessed by fellow member Martin Fox. Nick was enjoying a good day catching crucians to 2.5lb, decent bream and tench on method feeder. He was using a 13/4 lb test curve rod, 10lb line to 8lb braid and a size 10 hook when the big common took his chosen bait a single piece of plastic sweetcorn, beating his previous personal best a 20lb mirror from the Bridgewater canal by over 10lbs.

Ron Evans our bailiff on the Dane reports that all the anglers on the Dane on opening day caught with Nick Brunt having one of the best bags with two 4lb chub with smaller chub and dace making up his catch, Roland Hatfield also managed a couple of 4lb chub, several grayling and some trout. I would imagine by now the river is pretty low and in need of some fresh water to liven it up.

Member Steve Edge had his usual first pilgrimage of the season down to the River Severn at Loton Park the river was at the lowest level he had ever seen it. Fearing a blank he nevertheless persevered and was rewarded as dusk approached by a smallish barbel of 6lb, in Steve's words it is such a beautiful isolated spot to fish that any fish is a bonus!

The Mersey open last Sunday was won by the same angler Alan Faulkner for the third year in succession from exactly the same peg on the river which is pretty amazing. There has been no senior presentation for the last three years so Alan has missed out on his Warrington AA tankards something which will have to be remedied!

Albert Morris was again disappointed with the fishing at the Manchester end of the Bridgewater on Sundays open match. The match was fished from Parksway towards the Wides most anglers' fished caster at 14mtrs but the small fish are still not co operating with only a few roach backing up bigger tench and bream needs to get in the prizes. The match was fished just short or the wides near Kellogg's which on inspection later Albert found to be black with bream and chub all sunbathing and of course with no interest in the free meals the anglers were offering earlier.

15th June 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
The rivers opened on Wednesday and members will hopefully enjoy some decent sport, I would dearly love to be going out for a day on the Dee but have to get ready for my annual much anticipated fishing trip to the Emerald Isle. Along with fellow club secretary Bill Delves and angling columnist Dave Houghton this year we are exploring the potential of the massive Lough Ree in County Westmeath.
Well done to our Ladies National Team who this year still managed a third placed bronze medal despite missing two of the regular members due to my daughter Wendy arranging her wedding in Italy for the same day as the match. Fellow team mates Wendy Locker and Linda Cooke enlisted the last minute help of two other anglers to save the day.
The Bridgewater is still in a strange mood match organiser Albert Morris commented on a lack of roach in the majority of catches on the Sunday Open at Kellogg's Wides. Although one angler managed to win his section with a decent net of roach, the rest caught bream, tench, and odd perch. The best bream was 4.5lb with tench to 3.5lb and quite a few bigger fish lost at the net. Worm and caster at 14m accounted for the better weights.
The May Catch of the Month was won by Adam Whelan with a cracking tench catch from Sandiway which broke his personal best three times on the same day with fish of 8-1-0, 8-4-0, and 9-0-0. Hard luck to his dad Paul who also had a PB of 8-8-0, however I am certain that he will share in the Bait-Tech products prize valued at £100 plus a Korda carp care kit.
A quantity of fencing belonging to the club has been stolen from our Grey Mist site the culprits told members they were moving it to another job for the club. Fortunately we have the vehicle number and several witnesses the information has been passed on to the police.

Warrington Anglers Report 7th June 2010

Next Wednesday sees the opening of the season on our river venues after the compulsory  three month closed season. As with past tradition there will be a match taking place on the river Mersey next Wednesday the 16th June with the draw taking place at 9-00am at Weir Lane.

A report received this week just proves that specimen fish can be caught in some of our smaller venues with member Carl Andrews taking a 22lb mirror carp from our complex at Highleigh fisheries.

Grey Mist is still fishing well for tench with fish to 8lbs 10ozs being caught and a carp 0f 29lbs 12ozs reported. I spent some time around this water on Sunday and was given a guided tour of the work being carried out by our volunteers. This weekend saw the construction of five new pegs which are well designed and sturdily constructed which should withstand many years of use affording comfortable conditions for anglers. We would welcome any new volunteers to progress and complete the our plans for this water so if you could spare some time to put something back into your sport please go along to the mist and volunteer.

Cicley Mill Pool still remains popular with most pegs being taken each day and according to the anglers I spoke to last week the sport is good with tench, bream and crucian carp being caught. Work is taking place on this venue to repair the fence along the field side so at times this work may impact on availability of some pegs.

Rixton Clay pits continues to fish well for tench to 6lb and bream to 5lbs being caught but reports of carp being caught are rare apart from an unconfirmed report of a 30lb plus specimen being taken

I received reports the Macclesfield canal is fishing well on all lengths of the canal with good nets of bream, roach and perch being caught  The most prolific  sections are reported to be at Astbury, Scholer Green and the Warf with the latter being more productive for bream and good roach. Both the Bridgewater and Trent and Mersey canals are fishing quite well in certain areas with decent nets of fish being taken. Match results on Bridgewater canal have been fairly good with 5 to 6lb being required to win.

The weekly junior match this week saw a change of venue from the canal with the match taking place on Brookside fisheries which gave the juniors a different insight to angling. This also gave them opportunity to expand their skills to this type of fishing which will serve them well in future team competions. This change of venue was organised by Helen Dagnall who along with our regular volunteers coached the juniors on the different methods and I would like to thank her and the team for their support also I would like to thank Mike Timmins of Brookside for his support by offering his venue. Keeping on the junior match scene the Woodshaw reservoir summer series for both juniors and intermediates got underway this week. Everybody is welcome and the matches take place  every Monday evening with the draw at 5pm.It would be nice to hear any reports from our river venues next week so please forward information of not only your catches but the venues themselves.

Warrington Anglers notes  1st June 2010

The honorary members match series moved to their annual match at our Woodshaw reservoir at Wigan last week where they all had a good day with everybody catching well . There was a fish for battle between   Jeff Clare and Alan Brown  and at the end of the match there was only two ounces separating them with Jeff Clare taking the spoils with a weight of 7lbs-9ozs compared to Alan Browns weight of 7lbs-7ozs.

Our local bailiff Trevor Grey who along with his crew look after and maintain our waters around the Wigan area reported that Woodshaw has been fishing well with numerous good catches of crucian carp and tench being caught along with roach and skimmer bream. The Fosters complex received mixed reports  with Mowpin being very patchy with the odd decent carp being taken. The ' carp pool' is performing good with crucian carp and bream being taken. The 'C' and' D' are fishing well with carp to 5lbs being caught. At present work is being carried out on Johnsons pool to improve the pegs and clear swims but it is still available for fishing. The large complex at Worthington Reservoir at present is fishing quite well with bream to 7lbs being caught and double figure carp also feature in the catches.

Sandiway lakes at present according to reports is slow for sport with only a few carp being taken but this has been supplemented with big tench being. Sport should improve shortly when the active spawning season ends.

Rixton clay pits is the same story with the carp in a spawning mood but sport is good with tench to 5lbs being caught along with decent bags of bream and roach. A great deal of work has been carried out on this water along with Grey Mist over the past months by our volunteers to ensure the waters are clean and comfortable to fish. I would ask anybody visiting these waters to ensure that they clean up any litter in their vicinity before and after fishing .

On the canal fishing scene the Bridgewater canal is fishing quite well as can be seen from the recent match results . The roach which have been a rarity in the past few weeks due to spawning have started to make a comeback. This must be true as I managed to win the mid-week evening match with an all roach catch and according to some if I can do this the swim must be solid with fish. I have received reports that the Sankey canal at the Spike Island is fishing good with plenty of big roach being caught along with bream to 4lbs .
