25th November Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The prolonged wet spell and resulting high water levels have put the fish down and even the reliable river Dane has been out of sorts. The best catch reported from the Dane was member Ray Newton's bag of fifteen grayling and three chub, Ron the bailiff is sure that the chub are starting to feed again and is optimistic of a good spell over the next few weeks if the very heavy rain keeps off. The flooded conditions can be really dangerous so always be aware when on the rivers just to illustrate the point Ron had made two new pegs and they have just disappeared overnight in the torrent.

Ackers Pits has been having some extensive tree work done this week to remove old and potentially dangerous trees which will then allow for new native species to be planted and bring a better diversity to the site, the hedges are being trimmed too. This is being done mainly by our work party volunteers during the winter particularly there is ongoing work to be done around the fisheries and the only resource we are short of is a few extra willing volunteers particularly in the Warrington area. Input of this nature is a vital part of the clubs management and development structure and as an added bonus as in the case of Ackers Pits it is also of benefit to the local community. So if you can give a few hours or more please get in touch our work group needs you!

There have been many reports of fish thefts and related incidents from various rivers and waters around the country recently, so it is always a good idea to be prepared in case you come across anything untoward while out fishing.

The Environment Agency's hot line number is very useful to have in your `phone 0800 807060 they rely on good quality, factual information so always get any car numbers give accurate descriptions locations etc but never put yourself at risk call in the professionals straight away they are trained to deal with these criminals and know exactly what evidence they need to collect for a successful prosecution. If you are alone and feel threatened always contact the police. There is comprehensive advice on our web site.

On a happier note tickets for the annual Fur & Feather match on the River Mersey will be on sale

available from Cheshire Angling in Thelwall Lane, from Friday please note it is `a members' only match. The draw and presentation will be held at Stockton Heath British Legion.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street will be open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9-30pm for subscriptions, new members, etc.

18th November Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

John Conway had a pleasant surprise last Friday whilst chubbing on our Hurst Green stretch of the Ribble. The session started with a very nice late autumn barbel of 11lb-14oz followed by a smaller one and 4 chub the best being 4lb-14oz. Although this stretch is mainly noted for its quality chub occasionally the odd quality barbel also puts in an appearance. With river temperatures now dropping into single figures its pays to be on your toes for those flood pulse that push up the water temperature a couple of degrees.

In Saturday's local winter league on the `Cutanic' stretch of the Bridgewater canal Clampits team man John Dagnall showed the way, in a close match where small fish were the order of the day his catch of small roach and skimmers all taken on bread and caster took gave him the first place honors six ounces clear of the next best weight of Kevin Green.

Member Chris Jefferies had his first trip out to Grey Mist since the birth of his daughter Paige

On Thursday and was rewarded by catching one of the biggest and one of the smallest carp in the lake a common of 6lb and a mirror of 25lb both on Nash scopex squid liver boilies.

As a follow on from last week Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham have been back to Worthington lakes to try out the one they missed last time. The deepest lake of the three Worthington didn't disappoint and 40lb+ bags of roach and bream on waggler and caster were the result. As their good deed for the day they were also able to put another angler right on the pegs they fished last week he had a good catch too. Mine is to point out that a trolley or barrow is

A good plan!

I must thank also the members of the Pike Anglers club for again providing their `PAC on tour day' last Sunday lots of anglers turned up and got the benefit of their coaching and experience sadly the pike didn't oblige so enthusiastically on the day and only three jacks put in an appearance this is an excellent liaison and one which we are very pleased to be able to facilitate to enable new pike anglers to improve their skills.

The new unified governing body for angling The Angling Trust is poised to take over the reins from the NFA, NFSA, SAA, ACA and NAFAC bringing all aspects of our very diverse sport/pastime together as well as commercial and trade interests it will be the most important thing to happen in angling for decades if all goes to plan this will happen in January.

I have already read and heard `well I will wait and see what's in it for me before I join' well if you do you will get just what you deserve a big fat gap where the governing body and the protection of our sport used to be there will be no one to fight our corner don't be misled into thinking the Environment Agency will take its place they won't its not their job. Don't just leave it to the responsible clubs who have traditionally paid the lions share for the work of the various organisations, Warrington AA for instance is currently a member of all except the NFSA but it is not going to be like that anymore.

Every individual angler, club, Commercial fishery, and tackle shop in fact every business built on angling needs to contribute. There is strength in numbers and a professional amalgam of all the previously diverse and well meaning organisations can if we all put our money where our mouths are `Move Mountains'.
It is vital that every single one of us who has ever enjoyed fishing supports the Angling Trust to protect not just our sport but our right to enjoy out sport for ourselves and future generations. All the more important therefore that we all understand and tolerate the very different aspects of what we do.
Angling has and always will be all things to all men. In the past we have argued amongst ourselves, been territorial about the merits of coarse, sea or game fishing, match fishing or specimen fishing well now it is and should be a thing of the past. We are all `pleasure' anglers it is the only truly inclusive sport that I can think of and its time we all celebrated the fact. I don't like everything that every angler does but I for one am very proud of what angling achieves every single day for all kinds of different people.

11th November Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham have been on their travels around the waters and have passed
on some good information they paid a visit to the Macclesfield canal which and was on form and provided a good days sport Ernie tackled up and put his bait in poured a cup of tea from his flask and had a bite immediately. He had five decent bream in the net before Dickie had his first but once he had that first bite the fish were queuing up

throughout the day all caught on caster.

Wide Hole at Poynton was also on good form it always seems to fish well, waggler and caster does the job every time. Just as a matter of interest WAA signs have been ripped down and some of the fence near to the entrance has been broken by vandals but contrary to tackle shop gossip in that area we have not `given it up' our Association owns it and we have deeds to prove it.

On Sunday Worthington reservoirs were their chosen venues the middle one Arley reservoir produced roach, rudd and bream to 1.5lbs and plenty of them. The best method was fishing a waggler with double red maggot on the hook just touching the bottom. An angler who was walking by stopped to pass the time of day and was very impressed with the quality and the quantity of fish they were catching, despite it not being the best of day's weather wise.

He commented that if they had been there a few weeks ago when it was really fishing they would have `emptied it'! Later in the day they opted for an hour on the top reservoir Adlington, finding it much the same as far as depth, bait and catch rates the trip was pronounced a success. Well worth a visit.

Members of the Pike Anglers Club will be on the Statham (Star Lane) Lymm stretch of the Bridgewater canal on Sunday16th between 10am and 2pm. Any angler keen to learning about fishing for pike appropriate tackle rigs and baits etc should go along and talk to the guys who specialise in catching this species.

Finally despite Frank highlighting this in last weeks report we have again had instances of anglers leaving baited rods unattended. This is not only an offence under the EA fishery byelaws but also is in contravention of our rules.  There is always a possibility that a fish could be deeply hooked or become tethered and we would much prefer to lose a bad member than lose a quality fish any day. If wandering away from your baited rods is how you like to fish….. I understand The Ramblers Society always welcome new members.

4th November Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The River Dane was back on form this last weekend with Ian Smith reporting a catch of eight chub to 3-8-0 plus five grayling taken on feeder fished white maggot. Steve Simcock had an all grayling catch using the same bait taken on the stick-float. The grayling are now averaging around 1.5lbs and give a good account of them selves.

The fish of the month competition for October was won by Andy Nicholson with a personal best 20-2-0 carp from Grey Mist. He collects over £100 worth of Bait-Tech products plus a Korda carp kit. Get those entries sent in for the November competition; you've got to be in it to win it.

I can hardly believe it but we have had reports of the common carp that we stocked in Sandiway small lake a week ago are already being caught. More importantly their presence seems to have stirred up the resident fish to feed. More reports please.

Our new stretch of the Bridgewater Canal at Sale has been fishing well with good nets of roach and skimmers reported. Pike are active particularly at Agden and Broadheath areas where at the moment it seems to be quantity rather than quality. However the canal holds specimens to over 30lbs. We have had a report from the Kellogg's area that 'anglers' are catching and removing fish to eat. Under no circumstances should any fish be removed either dead or alive so these people are thieves and the police should be called immediately.

Some advanced warning the annual `Pike Anglers on Tour' teach-in is again being held on the Bridgewater canal at Star Lane at Statham in conjunction with the Pike Anglers Club. It will be on Sat 16th November 10.am to 2a.m on the bank. If you are keen to learn about the best methods and correct handling of these beautiful predators you should do your best to meet the people who know how.

We have had several recent reports of persons leaving baited rods unattended. This is not only an offence under the EA fishery byelaws but also is in contravention of our rules. There is always a possibility that a fish could be deeply hooked or become tethered.

Some Levels 1 and 2 angling coaching courses are being funded by the National Federation of Anglers and the Environment Agency . These places are for anglers with disabilities who would be prepared to work with our club coaching team. If you have the desire, time, and commitment to pass on your knowledge to others please ring me for details.
