Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes 31st July 2008

Things have been fairly quiet this week with very few reports coming in. Ron our bailiff on the Dane is frustrated by the lack of water and extremely low conditions the river is very clear and he is hoping for some rain to liven things up. The best catch he had to report this week was by Derek Wall who had twelve grayling the best being 1.5lb and a few small trout and one chub.

Cecily Mill has been flooded during the last week the reason for this is not clear however I believe it is now back to normal.

The Bridgewater is fishing very well along the whole length not many bream showing but good roach and quite a few of the tench we stocked three years ago are now turning up in catches at around the pound mark.  The Trent & Mersey is again becoming a popular destination with the carp fraternity more catch reports please.

Please note there is no access to the Moat at Frodsham. Works has been carried out on a pipe line on adjacent property and during this period yet again our lock has vanished so members can not gain access.

Some excellent new pegs have been completed by the work team on the far bank on Moore Quarry which now allows members the opportunity to fish more of the lake.

The Mersey fishing quite well at the moment with plenty of small fish to be had another reminder to members keep nets may only be used in matches on this water and barbless hooks at all times this is a condition of our lease.

Work will be continuing on Ackers pit shortly there is some more tree work to do and then the paths will be constructed by contractors engaged by Stockton Heath Parish council in mid August.

We will then be looking towards constructing new pegs and planting the margins before more stocking takes place in the autumn. If all goes to plan the fishery will be opening up again next season.  We have really missed this safe little oasis which has been the first place so many generations of young anglers in Warrington caught their first fish.

Frank and I went for a guide tour of the newly re- furbished and de -silted pools (Forsters Pools) at Wigan last week they are looking very good there is still a bit of tree trimming to do and car parks to complete. The banks are beginning to green up and they look perfect our Wigan team have been working alongside the contractors and they have all done us proud these pools will be a very popular with young and old members alike. Worthington lakes are fishing well and worth a visit all the lakes are providing good sport.

Keep your entries coming in for our catch of the month competition the July prizes are now up for grabs

Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes 17th July 2008

We have had reports from bailiffs on several waters during the last couple of weeks of various items of litter being left on pegs and the culprits in a couple instances have been identified. If you are one of the guilty ones you know who you are expect to lose your license very soon we don't want you in this Association.

Another example of stupidity was reported from Statham pool where someone had left a bundle of used line stuffed into the undergrowth this is just not acceptable. Take it home and burn it or wind it into a bundle and cut it into small pieces.

On a pleasanter note most of the waters are fishing well, Karl Stott say he is over the moon with his first ever leather carp from Moore Quarry the fish was in mint condition and caught at approx 9am on Saturday morning, he also had a very pretty common of 14lb 8oz fishing from the high bank side. His tactics and I quote 16mm custom rolled boilies on a blowback rig /8inch sheath skin hook link/long hair to a size 8 Ashima c-420 hook. I have absolutely no idea what that rig is but I am sure it will make perfect sense to our carp angling members.  Also at the quarry on Sunday Jamie Critchley had an 11lb bream on hair rigged half boilies.

The small lake at Sandiway has improved and some of the newly stocked carp have been included with tench and chub in catches. Best time to fish is evening and in cloudy conditions due to the clarity of the water.

Worthington lakes are fishing well particularly Arley which is benefiting from being lowered there have been some very nice bream and carp out and we would really like some `photos for the web site please.

The rivers are all still fishing well with the Dane consistent as ever giving good catches of grayling trout and chub except last Saturday when it was bank high however it goes down so quickly that  Sunday morning saw it back to normal when  Dave Davies had two trout of 2lb each and six chub biggest 5lb+

The Mersey match was cancelled last Thursday when the river was judged to be too high and dangerous to precede. However generally pleasure and match catches of roach and skimmers are good even two brown trout were caught during Sundays match.

Keep your entries coming in the July prizes are now up for grabs!

Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes 10th July 2008

Some interesting reports from around the rivers  Chris Dyer and Jamie Hankinson set out for the Ribble on Sunday but decide to try the Wyre which they had never fished before. The result was loads of chub and dace and a new personal best 7lb 2oz bream for Chris taken on maggot, Jamie favored the roaming approach and had chub to 3lb8oz on deadbait; on the same dead bait he had a 10lb pike, while he was playing it one of its much bigger relatives decided it looked like a taste morsel and gave him a fight for it! Jamie also had a perch of 1lb 2oz on worm.

Chris Edwards chose the Vyrnwy at Llananynech on Sunday; he had a mixed bag, grayling to 1lb, chub and dace to 1lb and a bonus 3lb sea trout. Interestingly he was targeting the barbel and knew they were there because as he was feeding hemp they were rattling and popping open his feeder to get to the hemp! All the signs of barbel in the peg but nothing he tried on the hook would tempt a bite, until he connected with a big fish that screamed off, and then snapped him on an underwater snag.

The Dane is still fishing well with father and son duo Chris Hands Senior having a good bag of grayling while son Chris had six chub to 41/2lb all anglers catching well.

Members are reminded that it is barbless hooks only on the Mersey and keepnets may only be used in matches.

The catch of the month winner for June is Steven Lloyd with a 13lb1oz bream from big Sandiway, backed up by another of  12lb 6oz both taken in the same session.

The June junior winner is one of our newest members 9 year old Courtney Wright who decided to take up fishing with her young sister Olivia. The girls were bought WAA licenses and a 3meter whip each, taken by Dad to Grappenhall trees on the Bridgewater for their first afternoon session. Olivia had 23 roach, perch and gudgeon and Courtney a similar catch of 20 +small fish. These girls are quick learners and the `just one last cast' plea gave them all a shock when it turned out to be a 2lb12oz eel for Courtney.

Pleas keep your entries coming in the July prizes are now up for grabs!

Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes 3rd July 2008

Worthington lakes are worth a visit odd carp and cruciens being caught on Arley, tench and hybrids mainly on Adlington with bream to 7lb and plenty of roach and perch from all three lakes.

Woodshaw reservoir is also providing good sport with plenty of cruciens, good roach and tench along with small skimmers and perch.

Tree and silt and reed clearance and work are completed at Forster's pools and seeding and peg construction and are now progressing well.

Big Sandiway is producing some beautiful bream to 13lb+ as well as odd carp Malcolm Crawshaw had a lovely carp of 18lb which we have not got in the archive neither is it one of the recently stocked fish.

The Mersey was re filled last weekend after the EA flood defense works were completed and despite being like the `Orinoco' swirling, and with floating logs and debris going through fish were topping everywhere Mike Pritchard on peg 4 took a good net of roach to 1lb, perch and skimmers to 1lb all on a small waggler and bronze maggot and just holding back. Sundays Tom James Open saw plenty of eels and skimmers, Alan Faulkner included a 3lb bream in his winning net.

The Wye was perfect with just a tinge of colour when Alan Wands was there on Saturday he had a dozen chub and numerous trout then a new personal best barbel of 6lb all on hair rigged halibut pellet. However that was not to last and his next barbel was 81/2lb he then lost another three!

The Bridgewater is providing consistent sport with good pleasure and match catches members report nets of caster roach to 1lb and small skimmers on pinkie and maggot. Pellet and corn is favorite for decent bream to 3lb in most areas.

Steve Daly nipped to Cecily at first light on Saturday for a couple of hours, although targeting the tench he had some good sport from the resident cruciens, before reluctantly packing in to go and attend a friends wedding.

The Dane is still obliging and members who visit with last weekend seeing near perfect conditions, bags of decent chub were becoming almost  the norm Brian Clayton had six chub best 5lb, Ron Williams also had a 5lb chub in his catch and Peter Riley's best was 41/2lb.

Best of Luck to our junior teams on the NFA National on the Stainforth & Keadby Canal this Saturday.
